I say get the horror out of there, too. MK1-2 were all about the Asian martial arts mythos and MK3 was a bloodless invasion where the population of an entire city vanished instantly leaving the city in-tact but desolate. The imagery of all of these games was utterly demolished in MK9 when everything went slasher film and MK3 turned into an all out war with helicopters battling dragons.

I suppose I don't mean horror in the slasher sense, but the early games definitely had a "scary" atmosphere, with the skeletons hanging from Goro's lair, the pit full of impaled bodies, the bath of acid, the haunted forest, etc.
I agree with you about MK9, it was great for getting back to what series should have been roster and gameplay-wise but it really missed the mark in terms of design for characters and stages
