Why aren't you playing the greatest genre of all time yet Yea Forums?
>they've existed since 1980
>many are still actively developed today
>many are free and open source: stick it to the man
>universally hated by journos everywhere
>if you're reading this, you can play one on your device
>almost everything is randomly generated: (depending on the game) infinite levels, infinite monsters, infinite loot, infinite replayability
>easy to learn but hard to master
>learn things one step at a time or look up guides on the wiki of the game
>if you don't like RPGs, you can try out a roguelite - a free version of Spelunky is available for Windows
Roguelikes
i played stonesoup for a bit about 2 years ago. it is still on my desktop. ill give it another go. what should my character be?
I've been playing Angband for years. Its based
>Greatest genra
I don't like stressing out over a fucking video game.
Is there one that has a good amount of depth but isn't full on autism? I love the concept and have tried to get into some of them but having a dice roll for every meaningless thing you do is annoying
imagine stressing out over a fucking video game lmao
Cataclysm: dark days ahead is babby mode and somewhat fun/good depth. The combat is a slogfest though
I'm playing through tome4 again. Just defeated my own clone.
Rogue-lites are better
They lack the planning present in a full roguelite and the mechanical importance of an actual action game.
Nethack; pure basedness - the game.
I've been playing for five years and I've never won. Closest I got was two levels from the end
>Be me
>Male Dwarven Valkyrie (found the Amulet of Jazz)
>AC -25, HP ~250
>Have more resistances than there are Tumblr pronouns
>Get to the Plane of Fire
>My amulet and rings are welded to me, thanks to being liberally cursed by Rodney
>Burning through nutrition like trannies burn through antidepressants
>Run out of food
>Everything on the level is made of fire and doesn't leave a corpse to eat
>Faint from hunger
>Rodney reappears, summoning many monsters
>I'm surrounded, at least three deep in giants and dragons
>Nothing can hit my unconscious body
>After many, many turns, an iron golem finally euthanises me
Good game, 11/10
Because after I figured out how to properly do Liir I had some RL shit I don't even remember now force a hiatus and now am too afraid to fuck up something if I resume playing.
Dredmor doesn't work well enough under my VM for some reason and I don't have time nor desire to figure things out right now.
So for now I'm mostly content with experimenting with weird builds in SPD. I've been thinking about trying CDDA and ToME, though.
recommend some good roguelikes then
thanks for the recommendation, I'll take a look
because PvP is better
but i am playing a roguelike right now.
Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky got me into roguelikes.
Nethack - the most popular old school roguelike, though it isn't very beginner friendly. Still great once you know what you're doing though.
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup - beginner friendly but still very challenging. Emphasises action and progression over grinding - enemies never respawn and the dungeon is of limited size, so skill is required to triumph.
Angband - the dungeon constantly shifts. The aim is to reach floor 100 and defeat the last boss. There's a bit of a LOTR influence. I haven't played much of this one but so far it's been a blast.
>enemies never respawn
Did they really finally get rid of enemy respawning? They autistically held onto that mechanic for years.
But I love them. I play nethack and ToMe all the time
what is the best open source rougelike i can dissect
This game seems really cool but I don't understand why they went with this kind of engine instead of the typical simple roguelike UI. It makes it so hard to get into for me. I think from what I read older versions of the game were just an angband variant so I might end up playing one of them
But I am.
DCSS: The most streamlined, user friendly rougelike that actually still somewhat resembles rogue.
Tome4: Unique in the genre for its focus on infinitely useable resources with a cooldown and indepth character growth and combat over bumping and using limited but extremely powerful consumables to win
DoomRL: Fun but degenerate combat, actually doesn't feel that much like Doom, as enemies that are 0 threat in Doom since you can just dodge them are rng dodging here encouraging shooting shotguns offscreen to kill them so as to never take damage
DemonsRL: The only roguelike with a good party system. Plays like SmT. Like half the mechanics are 100% ripped from it.
tome1=sucks
tome2=PCB with less options
tome3=sucks so much the dev tries to pretend it never existed
Just play PCB instead
How would a simple roguelike UI work in a game where you have 25~ cooldowns to manage? I also have a bunch of sustains(not pictured on the toolbar) I have to manage if they get dispelled or if I use up exactly all of my mana(mana-using sustains deactivate if you go down to 0 mana, which I have accidentally done on 3 separate occasions during this run alone).
Yeah. They got rid of it about a year ago. It's better than the old mechanic where if you stayed on one floor for too long the game would start throwing overlevelled monsters at you to scare you downstairs. I've never found hunger much of an issue though.
I've considered playing PCB but the only download I can find is the source code that requires Visual Studio to compile, and fuck that shit
Brogue if you want something that's more minimalist with less RPG elements. It's also arguably more tactical since most of the enemies will fuck you up in 1v1 melee combat so you have to use your resources wisely to win. It probably has less longevity than other games though precisely due to the lack of RPG elements, but you can move onto other stuff once you get bored of it
I'm not playing them currently because I've already played the shit out of them, mainly ADOM. I think one problem is that once you've memorized the shortcuts for one, it's a pain in the ass to start to learn the shortcuts for another one.
I like some roguelites like Monolith and Nuclear Throne but they get stale surprisingly quickly for me since while the parts may be shuffled around the content itself is kinda simplistic and generic. Spelunky seemed like that too but I only played a few hours
I've always loved ADOM, but the new releases have utterly fucked the game up. They wen't full on CoD for some reason, with dialogue and xp-popups, weird quest popups and whatever the fuck else. Wen't from 10/10 to 2/10 would not play
Sounds like you should try actual roguelikes then since they focus 100% on deep content.
You want Frogcomposband, the most updated version. Or Elli which is outdated but has some options frog lacks since it was built from 7.1, the version that removed them.
Regular PCB is literally years out of relevance.
Both of these have regular EXE downloads.
Also Sil if you want this except good. Far better AI than broque, far more control over growth, far better maps that aren't 50% water
Incursion is also worth trying since its neat but unfinished
pls reply
i want to make an action rouge like
Nethack
Which angband is the most like an actual game?
The water would be ok if eels weren't fucking ridiculous to deal with early on. You can die in depths 1 or 2 if you get unlucky with water/eel spawns
Been getting back into Elona recently, shit's pretty fun.
Marrying your pet cat is fucking tricky though.
MuMo
who /nethackandangbandonly/ here
Is there a reason Nethack doesn't give you basic information like how much an object weighs or a basic description of what it looks like? Are they just too lazy or is it supposed to somehow make the game more fun?
>what if we just made dying suck massive dick instead of making a good game
cool genre dude, however
You could try One Way Heroics. It's pretty straightforward (no pun intended), and has a pretty nice sprites, for those who can't stand tilesets or ASCII.
Another one is DoomRL, as an average run of it doesn't lasts as long as a normal roguelike, but it's still very satisfying to play.
