I'd argue there's a big difference between adding this shit into a children's novel and adding this to stories where the protagonists are portrayed as mass murderers and the world is similarly dark. That said

Back in the KOTOR days they did quite tasteful job with Juhani, I don't think her lesbianity ever came up unless you're playing as a female character and chose to flirt with her in some initial conversations triggering romance options in the future dialogue.
