For 1080p with even h264, let alone h265 (AV1 and the like have no hardware accel yet and can't do realtime even remotely), looks plenty good at 20 Mbps. That's only 9 gigs an hour. ~20gigs an hour is like 40-50 Mbps, which yeah could be nearly transparent in terms of quality and matches nice Bluray but not only is it overkill it would also cripple adoption if it was a hard requirement because most people don't have connections that fast. Whereas ~20 Mbps is within range even of general DSL.

4K is a stupid meme marketing phrase that causes further confusion because 4K is actually the name for Cinema 4K (which would be TV 8K) and has been used for years and years before 4K monitors were a thing.
