Persona has always been popular, but P5 really jettisoned persona into the normiesphere. It's generally more accessible with simple gameplay and themes and has plenty of waifus for guys to slaver over.

No, they're only linked in themes and some secret stuff going on in the background as well as a few references here and there.
The only games that are intrinsically linked are Persona 1 and Persona 2. Play Persona 5 first, you'll love it and it's the most enjoyable and most accessible.
