Went into Xenoblade Chronicles 2 as my first one and now it’s one of my favorites

it probably helps that 2 has a functioning combat system and a story that doesn't fall apart if you think about it for 10 seconds

I've enjoyed my time with it, though the combat can be pretty slow until it starts opening up more in chapter 3. Also, Nia is best girl.

The story is mostly stand alone, all Xeno games are connected only losely to a certain object. There are some stuff with regards to Blade 1 that you'll miss but it actually works both ways so when you play 1 you'll get the same effect.

yeah probably. the combat takes a little getting used to, and it takes a little longer than it should to fully open up. It's not until ch.3-4 that you start to really be able to enjoy the combat.

Here's the reality:
Gameplay wise, the combat can start out a bit slow and be a bit confusing, but later on has a surprising amount of depth. It has some big, beautiful areas, but one of the most annoying things is "skill checks" that will require you to navigate the menu to swap out blades for certain things.

Plot-wise: It's the xeno crack at a "light-hearted game." The plot is definitely more about having fun than necessarily being deep or anything. It has some very cool moments, especially in the endgame, and some cringy moments. There are some weirdly super-butthurt people on this board who loathe this game and autistically overemphasize the cringe scenes whenever it's bought up. Really in terms of cringiness, it's pretty typical for a JRPG.

I hate this, I'm content with games taking some time to really get you going but anything more than 5-10 hours is unnecessarily long and indicative of bad design.

the two biggest contributors to this is bad pacing and that the game is really beginner unfriendly. But if you do get by that initial wall, the game probably already has you by the balls.

XC2 is a very mixed bag of both good and bad things, as someone who started out disliking it, I've grown to love it and still play it every now and then because it's actually pretty fun, but it takes a while to get fun, and that is a big while
XC2 is an investment in which if you can stick it out with the stuff you don't like, the pay off will be discovering the very good things the game offers

50% of the game is spent doing bullshit in the menus. Quests, drivers, equipment, skills, affinity, blade chips, etc. It's really tedious, and nothing you do feels very impactful.

Either XC2 or MGS2 is the most divisive game of all time. XC2 is a game that reached for the sun but simply didnt have enough QA time to smooth out the edges of its story and gameplay and UI. The difference is that a lot of people looked back at MGS2 and realized it was a masterpiece, there's a huge defense force for XC2, something MGS2 didn't have at it's time of release, years down the line, when the future games can only do better while with MGS had shit like MGS4, XC2 will be heavily criticized for it's flaws, not praised for everything it did right like MGS2.

The defense robot enrages when the powerlines hp gets low, hit the defense robot until you have 3 bars, then do a couple element orbs on the power lines into a chain attack when the powerlines are at about half hp.
