The better graphics/physics/AI (I use those last two terms loosely, see the videos) compared to Morrowind made it a lot more accesible and i think it was many people's (myself included) first TES game, strengthening the nostalgia. Getting out of the tutorial sewers was a pretty memorable gaming moment as well, on par with stuff like Pokémon Red/Blue. It's essentially what Rome Total War was to the turnbased strategy series, for The Elder Scrolls.

Oblivion had actually cool quests and the games systems were made to break with enchantments that did cool shit and custom magic.
Skyrim didn't have a single memorable quest and its enchantments are just for one shotting shit with bows which is boring and the magic in Skyrims shit.

I dont even remember radiant ai doing anything in Skyrim. At least in Oblivion you could see npcs going to inns and shit to eat during the day.

I dont get all the praise Oblivion gets at all. Nothing about Oblivion felt great to me, it felt like a graphically updated lower tier game.

Tamriel didnt even look like the citizens could build it. The game looks like a bunch of dolls walking around some prefab structures, except for the houses out in the fields.

Questlines were much better. I would go so far as to argue with the exception of the main quest Oblivion had the best actual quests of the series. Shame its so ugly and the combat so trash.
