He knew about Rebellion because he heard Vergil's story of seperating himself from V. If Yamato can cut apart, What can the Rebellion do? It's pretty obvious. Nothing in the game implies V can merge back other than V's action. The characters wouldn't recognize it since his actions also needed Urizen to be beaten.

Letting Vergil's remorseful humanity deal the killing blow to Vergil's power-hungry demonic side would have "saved" Vergil. Dante didn't foresee V merging with Urizen because he underestimated the human desire of self preservation, as well as the lingering feelings of sibling rivalry deep in V's heart. V intended to kill Urizen from the start, but in his last moments the thought of merging together felt like the most natural course of action to him. Two halves became one whole again.

Dante's struggle has always been the opposite of his brother's. Vergil embraced his Demonic side in his pursuit of power and Dante renounced it. They reacted to the trauma of losing their mother to demons in different ways. In DMC3 Vergil forecfully unlocked Dante's devil trigger by stabbing him with Rebellion. Dante stabbing himself with Sparda + Rebellion was a way to show how much more accepting of his demonic side he has become since DMC3, and this ritual unlocked more power. There are a lot of nods to DMC3 in DMC4.

Because they split the story between 3 characters. Barely any of them got good arcs. Only V had something worthwhile.

So, let's try rewriting DMC5 since everyone complains about the story. We can try two different approaches:

Keep as close to the author's intent as possible. All characters have nearly the same roles in the story and the plot is very nearly the same.

Keep pretty much all the same locales and characters, this includes bosses, but retool them and the story pretty drastically.

I want to see what Yea Forums does with both of these, but I think the second one would be needed to make the game's story not shit. As it is, the game is an unfocused and poorly paced fan service extravaganza that doesn't really know what to do once it brings back its fan favorite, so just ends. The first 7 chapters of the story are Nero and V just kind of fucking around outside the tree going on errands that don't really mean anything in the plot. Sure, as the game is written, they want to destroy some roots to sever the line of blood to Urizen, but this could be easily written out or put the roots in a more direct path, or in and around the tree so that you don't get a whole chapter of V wandering around some sewers and a shipyard and a whole chapter being dedicated to a really shitty boss fight.

I honestly didn't take as much with the story itself as with its execution. M01 should have been some time between May 15 and June 15, ending with Nero meeting V. M02 is as is.

V should have been more explored. Some of his character moments are nice and subtle, making more sense after you beat the game, the rest are hamfisted and throwaway (like Griffon's, "Thinking about mommy dearest?"). He needed some kind of defining human moment, the scene where he almost impales Dante comes close. Scene with Trish was also pretty good. Maybe something like accelerating his decay to carry Sparda over to where Dante is (who ends up being a bit harder to reach). Game ends with a Vergil who prefers the world doesn't go to shit, wish V's journey reflected that change of mind.

Lady and Trish needed at least one worthwhile scene, them trying to double team Urizen unsuccessfully in M10 would've been a great opportunity. It's kind of a shame that Trish continues to be the least developed character since 1, but that's whatever I guess.

Remove/redo flashback of Eva hiding Dante in the wardrobe. Should have included the "secret" catacombs used as an escape before she goes back to Vergil, and subtly throw in that Sparda's absent (etc. "we just have to hold out until he gets here").

Swap M17 and M19-20 locations for bosses. Maybe make the apple look like a beating heart, as visual pun for where all the blood was being pumped.

Those are pretty much the only things that bothered me about the plot.

If its after he comes back, give him his own missions reflecting on his motivations before and his motivations now. Make it a hunting ground. To enter the tree, Nero and V need to hunt down the roots and their respective demons. Get key items from them. This makes it more excited. Adding the Hunt to the Devil Hunter. Add back flavor text to interact with the environment to help you hunt down the demons. Put in puzzles along the way.
Vergil cut himself because he wants to get rid of Mundus' corruption. Cutting out his human half is just a bonus. Urizen wants power because Urizen is his primal instinct. Make it clear that the Quilphoth is something he took advantage instead of something he started. Make it clear that the demons are responsible for V's degradation as well.
Nero's insecurities are hinted at with his conversation with Nico. Maybe he even sees Credo's demon form while fighting Artemis since they both look angelic to a point.
Malphas was working for Mundus. She was instructed to help Urizen get the fruit to defeat Dante. This makes her conversation make more sense than working for Urizen.
Dante really wants to kill Vergil to stop him once and for all. Dante vs Nero vs Vergil. 2 endings. If Dante wins, Vergil dies and thanks Dante for proving him wrong about power and Nero is incapacitated. Dante gets Yamato and cuts off the Quilphoth roots and leaves Nero. If Nero wins, Both are forced to submit but both degrudgingly agrees to cutting the roots together. There. It's unique and way more fun.

He barely had any games to have fun in. DMC1 was experimental, his character was completely different from what he ended up in cuhrayzee trilogy. 2 flopped harder than the reboot. Then DMC3 defined the character. Then 4 introduced Nero for some reason and made Dante age to 40+. Then there was a shitty reboot. DMCV makes him an old fart granddad who constantly comments on how old he is.
It is like there was no middle. Dante from DMC1 is not the same Dante from all the different games. So we only experienced an extremely young Dante and old meme boomer Dante.

I did. His character feels consistent between 3-5, but in 1 he is noticeably cheesier, has weird dramatic lines and says shit like "the sky will always be the same, no difference" with a straight face. Just because both versions joke it doesn't mean that they are the same, character's tone, manner and approach to situations are still different. There is a reason why some people dislike 3-5 Dante and like DMC1 Dante.

Going to overhaul the story by a lot here.

V is now Mundus' child, like everyone thought he would be initially. Not a rape baby or anything like that, but magnanimous Mundus with his beautiful god-like presentation would have no problem banging a religious woman or a witch who loves demons. Mundus wanted to create a half demon just like Sparda after seeing the power the two children had after all his assassination attempts on them failed. V was very young when Dante defeated Mundus. He does kind of hate Dante because Dante's existence is the impetus for V's own cursed existence, son of a megalomaniacal demon king whom V still feels kinship toward, and Dante basically destroyed him.

Urizen is just Vergil. There are some journal entries, the Fury one especially, that talks about how demons are affected and can change based on their desires. Due to his constant powerlusting and single-minded fixation on beating Dante, Vergil has become the twisted entity that is Urizen.

Mundus is in the story now, but with greatly diminished powers and Malphas is his main envoy. Hell, Malphas can actually be V's mother transformed into a full on demon after sacrificing the rest of her family like Arkham in DMC3; V managed to escape. V would really hate what his family has become and this would also explain why he explicitly hides from Malphas all the time in the game.

This way, everyone is positioned to have satisfying arcs as their own characters. Really pump that theme of family for everyone. Most importantly, we're keeping V around so that the torch can be properly passed from the old trio of Dante, Trish, and Lady to Nero, Nico, and V.

I'll probably have to make a second post for the actual plot changes.

It is close, but it slightly doesn't match to 3, 4 and 5 Dante being completely unflappable. DMC1 Dante still has something to worry about which allowed Trish to manipulate him in the first place. To be honest, the age might not change things much. 5 just felt like they were going MGS4 route with the throwback to all the games in the series while making Dante old and mentally tired. And the game constantly reminds us that Dante ages like humans because of the human blood. So it feels like he is getting old while we didn't even get to enjoy shit with him in his prime. Things really started with 3 and now there is a gap.

Just don't be overly aggressive and you'll do fine. Balrog jumps break all the summoned swords when Vergil retard-dashes you during his flight phase.

Shotgun Stinger and DT Stinger are great ways to break his guard in later phases so that you can shit on him some more and get free damage. Same goes for Sin DT, use Luce (hold RT) for some ridiculous damage.

Bringer on L1 to do the holds
Gun on R2

Well, his fight has a certain rhythm to it until he brings the doppelganger, then it's a hectic clusterfuck.
Learn the rhythm of dodging and creating combo openings. If he DTs, run away with trickster or if you're so inclined, use the opportunity to build Royal Guard meter if he lashes any attack that you're familiar with the guard timing.

Always focus on the Doppelganger before going after Vergil. Don't forget about Sin Devil Trigger, it might give you a victory at the final stretch of the fight where, as I said, is hectic as fuck.

V's summons almost have no synergy with each other. You can combo Griffon's Flank Attack into Shadow's Guillotine, that's probably one of the most practical applications. V has a pretty basic kit. Fitting for a half of a character.

All these people claiming Dante didn't know who V was were not paying attention. There's a reason when V is clammering after Dante just after the Cavaliere fight, Dante is in a rush to get away and not let him say his piece. You can tell just from the look he gives V over his shoulder, he was either afraid of letting himself get close to his brother in any form or he still held some resentment for his brother's past actions and pinned them on V.

Also take note of the way he says "nobody important" when Lady asks who V is.

No, not at all. DMD in 3 is a huge chore, with a fuckton of health and hyper armor on enemies, forcing you to DTE constantly.

Still get decent health in 5, but it's not nearly as tedious

I get why they did it with 3, and 4 feels like they were pressured by 3 having it, especially since it's the same weapons. I want to see them do a Yamato only Vergil, whether the returning concentration gauge works like exceed and modifies his skills, or maybe even give us a sheathe/unsheathe mechanic so you can control more precisely when you complete the stylish, slow clink of a sheathe, and the sheathed sword attacks are less damage oriented and more setups or something like that.

The story is fine, it's the pacing that kills it. V needed more time with Nero to hammer home his humanisation, and make it so when VErgil learns Nero is his kid it hits home more. Mission 20 should have been Dante Vs Vergil, with a surprise Mission 21 to have nero come in and stop them short of killing each other.

The idea of stances for Yamato is cool, but I'd want ONE other weapon for Vergil. And that'd be the Force Edge moves again but instead he's using a Summoned Sword. You could do some interesting things with that like a Million stab ending with Vergil letting go of it and then it blowing up inside what it got stabbed into or it breaks apart like glass at the end of a combo because it looks cool.

I'll miss the assymetry of his design, especially now that his arm can just look normal, but I admit some of the elements are just borrowed from other DTs, like the Dante's wing coat and Vergil's arm sheath and he needed something that's his.
That being said the only thing that actually bothers me in his new DT are the Angelo horns made with feathers, I think it's the random beige thrown with all the blue and red.

Train in the void to see if you can pull your move correctly; in the heat of battle I often get mix up with the various attacks especially with V, I really have trouble pulling of the back+forward attack with Griffon where he creates a lightning v
