In episode 1 you found out that the combine soldiers "chose" willingly to give part of their humanity. They may still have "free will" to some extent and the memories or personality, but its clear they had some sort of lobotomy as well so they cant go against orders no matter what.

I really hate that the 'HL3 mini-ending' that writefag released shows how utterly fucked humanity would be even if the resistance won. There is no concievable victory. It's retroactively makes Breene and fucks like image related the actual smart choice, in that humanity gets to continue existing, in some form or for a while longer. I don't mind dark settings or even tragic endings, but I really don't like it feeling like everything I've done across a game series was pointless outside the experience. I like to feel like there is some hope.

yeah, you had sympathizers like civil protection who joined after humanity was lost and then you had the armies of earth that surrendered during the war and were turned into the fully mutated soldiers in places like nova prospekt. i think they also took civil patrol who showed unwavering loyalty and 'gifted' them with mutation/assimilation
