My job is giving me 4000 Canadian dollarydoos (~3000 USD) to buy a laptop. Desktops are not allowed because of frequent travel. Sucks, but it's free money. What laptop should I buy for gaming?
Alienware Area 51m is at the top of my list right now, anybody with personal experience using it?
>pretending to have a """"""job"""""" work laptop so you won't get BTFO by Yea Forums Fuck off faggot
Angel Ortiz
just make sure you buy an alienware. happy gaming friend.
Asher Rivera
its you again
Evan Kelly
Don't build for gaming. Build for portability. Dell, HP, Lenovo. Check out their thin models and settle for classic emulators.
Joshua Long
What job is going to give you 3 thousand fucking dollars for a laptop. What job requires you to have a $3000 laptop?
Jaxon Thompson
Alienwares are heavy as fuck, just get a top of the line Asus with dedicated and check the battery
Ryder Fisher
If you really have to, check the Asus N series.
Ethan Rogers
Literally no fucking person would travel with this shit. When I saw it at CES, there was this small asian chick and I asked her to pick it up so I could see her drop it. She held it for 3 seconds over the display area before putting it down.
Christopher Rogers
N you say
Nathaniel Price
I bought an Asus S510Q for 800 bucks and it can play lots of modern games on medium, you don't really need to overkill it with a 3k laptop
Liam Perez
Razer cant even make good mouse anymore, that said its probably the best bet for user
Jack Morales
Seriously OP get a Razer Blade. Mines a 1060 but the RTX models are a great deal now.
Does it have to be a single item purchase? Or can the 3000 include peripherals like headphones and mice?
James Gonzalez
I'm not OP, but I have a $2800 laptop for work. That said, that's the corporate discounted rate I got through Dell, and I wasn't just gifted / given $3000 to buy whatever the fuck I wanted to.
Zachary Cook
OP's lying you stupid fucks. He wants advice without Yea Forums telling him not to buy a fucking gaming laptop.
Jeremiah Peterson
If you are a doc u get 4k for any tech purchases
Caleb Roberts
I have a 2080 RTX blade, it's pretty great. I can play division 2 at max settings around 60-80fps and it's pretty fucking quiet for a gaming laptop
>implying they wouldnt just give you a mac >implying theyd let you choose
op about to delete the thread out of shame
Parker Nguyen
Portable workstations with a Quadro I think. Those can get really expensive.
Levi Carter
If the company provides money like that and the machine is used for work it will be added to their MDM and be under their control, in which case only a fucking idiot would use it for anything personal. But since OP's story is made up anyways you are correct enough.
Dominic Walker
Imagine attending an important meeting and you see a faggot pop out a 5 inch tall laptop with a flaming red alien on it
Samuel Torres
I'm an architect and my laptop allowance is slightly higher than OP's. Some people need to talk to clients and do work on the fly, not stand behind a counter and flip burgers.
Camden Perry
Do you even tech industry or IT Finance? Plenty of dudes have gaming laptops out.
Brody James
This ain't the 80s, user. You keep your work docs on a cloud SharePoint, the hardware is yours. Unless you're at a shitty company.
David Carter
For that kind of money, the razer blade 15 advanced or acer predator line, dell is so far behind the gaming competition for anything except their monitors.
How would your clients react if your whipped out an Alienware with a bunch of personal games and shit on it for your professional presentations? Generally you should keep your work system for work and not use it for other personal uses that could compromise its security. If you've got the kind of job that gives you thousands of dollars to pick your own work machine, its the kind of job that gives you enough money to build and pack a separate luggable small form factor gaming machine in a suit case for when you travel.
Gabriel Carter
get a Clevo and spec it out with the most expensive shit you can get.
Josiah Allen
Any Asus over 2000
Hudson Lee
keked
Easton White
>17 inch >frequent travel nonononono big mistake. Do not fall for the 17" meme just because those higher hardware specs are tempting. Get a 15", you'll thank me later
Wyatt Collins
99 percent of jobs usually provide a work laptop and they're usually dells or ibms. I have a hard time believing your job would say "oh heres 3k. Go buy a laptop for work". I guess Canada may be different or you're lying, but I dont know why a company wouldn't provide the laptop, let alone give you enough to buy the most overpriced gaming laptop possible.
Enjoy the two plug brick and having to repaste it and still having issues with thermal throttling. It's cheaper to get a really nice desktop than some alien-ware laptop that will most likely require you to break it apart to re thermal pad and paste just to run minecraft.
My job is giving me 6.5 quintillion GBP (~8628700384972786688 USD) to buy a laptop. Desktops are not allowed because of frequent travel. Sucks, but it's free money. What laptop should I buy for gaming?
Connor Gomez
And some of us sales engineers only need a laptop that's $1200 max. That's cute you think you need a gaudy gaming laptop for work.
Landon Sanders
ASUS ROGs have really shitty QC, don't know about MSI
Jaxson Diaz
Dude just get an expensive work laptop with a touchscreen, you're gonna have to take that shit to meetings and travel with it and gaming laptops are pretty bulky. You're gonna look like a kid if you use that for business when everyone else has Macbooks or something
Luis Ramirez
Its not that uncommon in certain industries, generally its upper management setting an official policy that they only buy the cheapest Dells, and then giving themselves and a few privileged divisions an escape clause to let them buy Macs. Not that its just a personal vanity thing. Often a large chunk of that money is intended for high-level professional software which is beyond the needs of the rank-and-file, UNIX-only, and several thousand dollars itself.
Robert Brown
you don't know what an architect does, do you
Tyler Nguyen
>2.2 Ghz >61C user...
Asher Cook
Is that bad? Seems okay if that's as hot as it gets under normal load.
Jack Price
Would you rather have a massive gamery looking laptop on the job just so you can sometimes play games on it, or one that looks professional and is extremely lightweight? Ideally you'd look for one with both professionalism and raw power in it, but you shouldn't sacrifice professionalism, period, for something you'd use on the job.
Julian Johnson
Oh right, forgot to add, don't buy from alienware they're shit.
Ian Foster
you guys realize he said 3k CANUCK BUCKS, which is like 1.5k american dollars. he can't afford a gaming laptop.
Christopher Johnson
>My job is giving me 4000 Canadian dollarydoos (~3000 USD) to buy a laptop. are you blind?
Colton Gutierrez
Just get a ps4
Noah Gomez
>My job is giving me 4000 Canadian dollarydoos (~3000 USD) to buy a laptop. Desktops are not allowed because of frequent travel. Sucks, but it's free money. What laptop should I buy for gaming? Why on earth would they allocate such a large amount of money for a corporate laptop? And is a small form factor desktop really that verboten?
Just buy a work laptop that fits your needs and use the rest to build a decent desktop saying you need it for a home office.
Austin Scott
I have the msi gs60, op and it's pretty good. Thin, metal and strong but over heats kinda quickly and struggles with power management, and the wifi card is kinda shit becausr of it. If they fixed some of the better known issues with the 60, id assume the 65 is really good. Im not going digging for any specifics or details right now though, but i can at least let you know your second option might actually be a pretty solid idea. Kinda sad that shitposting is so rampant that we can't have a thread about laptops and video games though, considering I'm a adult and don't get my rectum twisted when other people play video games their own way, I like hearing about the kind of shit people play on.
Blake Cook
spend 1k on a laptop
spend the other 2k on a desktop for yourself
as if work has to know, just bullshit
Blake Russell
imagine falling for the gaming laptop meme and making up a story like this on the internet to justify throwing your money away.
Jayden Cruz
Right now it's 1 CAD to 0.75 USD, or 3 to 4.
Wyatt Wood
Right now it's ASUS > MSI > LENOVO > DELL (ALIENWARE)
Zachary Bailey
>Desktops are not allowed because of frequent travel no excuses
This I bought a giant-ass Asus back in college because I didn't want my PC in the dorms. Awful idea
Isaiah Green
That's really cool, like an ammo can pc? Where did you learn to make one?
Kayden Reyes
lol youre probably right
Owen Nguyen
Our tech people absolutely despise non-standard PCs, everyone from trainees to top brass gets fleet machines and they'll like it. We do have a procurement channel for non-standard shit, but that's at least several weeks of waiting (more like several months usually) for another generic Windows machine vs. just getting handed a decently high spec Elitebook we have preinstalled and sitting on our shelves. During my time, I've seen exactly one Mac and that was strictly forbidden from ever touching our domain, forced to subsist off the guest network instead.
Just because it's more work for the techs doesn't mean they get to say what gets issued. You think the poor bastards in Accounting make decisions based on what's EASIER for them? Lol
Blake Butler
Do UNIX-based OSes accumulate trash leftovers over time like Wangblows?
Benjamin Hernandez
>My job is giving me 4000 Canadian dollarydoos (~3000 USD) to buy a laptop liar
Ayden Long
OP here, I'm thinking I'll get the Triton 500 instead, it's way thinner and lighter, and I'll just put a cover on the back.
Parker White
Poorfags don't know what a good job is like
Logan Rodriguez
use cad
Adrian Anderson
overglorify the inability to get a civil/industrial engineering degree....you know, the peasant engineering disciplines
Austin Hall
if you are going to be traveling in my opinion just get a 3ds/switch/psp/vita having to deal with a GAYMIN laptop is just a pain >they all have SHIT termals >they all hold battery for like 3h >they all have butchered cards >they all have shitty gamer asthetics >they all have jet engine fans >they all are overpriced no fucking reason to own one, you want a laptop? get one with a good apu. you wanna game? either settle for shitty to decent performance or get any portable
i know honesty hurts and the bottom line is that beneath all of our brutal honesty lies the simple fact that were all trying to save you money while simultaneously trying to give you the best performance/experience
what if I don't care about losing money and I value portability over the best performance?
Xavier Russell
Buy a cheap laptop and buy a switch
Christian Wright
The dimensions of these boxes are too awkward for my backpack. Putting it in checked luggage is asking for it to get fucked.
Also you're gonna need to transport a monitor too.
Michael Sullivan
>Also you're gonna need to transport a monitor too. aren't you staying on a hotel OP? just use the available TV there
Carter Hernandez
I'm OP, trust me
Jason Flores
>'portability isnt a characteristic of experience'
youve got to go back
Ayden Cooper
I'm not OP but I do travel from time to time.
Evan Davis
>travel to meet business customer in a different country to close a deal >all prepped up for a big pitch in their meeting room >their CFO is even present >”We’re ready for your presemtation user” >”H-hold on, let me connect my laptop to the UV-cable for my presentation” >pull out giant 17” Alienware laptop with Pepe and GamerGate stickers all fucking over it >the potential customers are already weary at this point >Laptop starts roaring like an engine the moment you opened it >Steam tries to automatically logon to your account “TRANNYFUCKER” >Music/GFX starts playing from your trayed game of choice (probably casual shit since OP is a fag) >at this point the brick of a laptop is already drained >get kicked out >cry on the airplane home and write a biopgraphy about it on a venetian gondola BSS >get called a fag for buying Alienware
YIKES
Tyler Jones
if that is the case then a desktop would definitely not give me the best experience
Elijah Bailey
Why not buy a NUC?
Chase Butler
>using your work machine for gaming Literally why? It’s not yours, just build your own.
Joshua Cruz
Is giving presentations the only thing you do with your work laptop? Generally I put mine on a USB. The laptop is for actually doing work.
Zachary Ortiz
Quit being such a thot.
Colton Brooks
I'm not opposed to it, but I haven't seen anything that indicates they'd be powerful enough to handle gaming with High+ visuals. At least the laptop provides more space for the parts.
Evan Williams
>sales engineer They’re giving the title of engineer to literally anyone these days, huh?
>it's a gaming company >board appreciates that you are genuinely engaged with the field >'you like games? Have you played.. . ' >get the sale and a huge client
you can get cases more in the size of a ps4 if you don't want the box, can also use wathever tv if they have an hdmi
Connor Rogers
i am pretty sure devs don't use gayming laptops user.
Jaxson Rivera
You're thermal throttling dawg. 2.2ghz is insanely low.
Joshua Rogers
>gaming laptops >work Yikes
Fastest way to get stonewalled or be seen as a bitchboi by boomer bosses
At least soys will just mock you for not owning Apple shit, boomer bosses won't even take you seriously
Stick to HPs, normal Dells and Thinkpads
Adrian Adams
Get a surface pro 6 laptops are not convenient at all compared to a windows tablet
Jose Hill
Get a Lenovo if you're sticking with PC. If you want something nicer, a Surface Laptop or even a MacBook Pro.
Dylan Reyes
CPUs don't thermal throttle until 90c, you cat. They shut down at 100c.
David Parker
I don't like Lenovo because they have excessive amounts of preinstalled bloatware and I don't want to buy a clean copy of windows to wipe it
That doesn't sound right but I don't know enough about CPUs to dispute it
Matthew Roberts
I work at Deloitte and about half the floor has ROG laptops, one of the thin models. They look pretty good.
Elijah Russell
Can you even game on a NUC?
Jaxon Flores
Wtf are those numbers? How can you pay for a 2.2ghz i7 in 2019?
Camden Parker
>its the kind of job that gives you enough money to build and pack a separate luggable small form factor gaming machine in a suit case for when you travel. I allways wonder... And where the fuck do you put a decent, at least 21', monitor?
Kayden Clark
That's pretty bad, I'd want a 3.5 at least
Jeremiah Adams
You can do a fresh install on any win 10 computer. There's an option for it called clean reinstall.
Ryan Martin
A decent carryon suitcase has more than enough space for the average man on a business trip. Tumi makes good ones.
Kayden Morris
That's its idle speed I think. No need to run full throttle when browsing Yea Forums.
Christopher Hill
Oh, nice, I haven't bought a pc since windows 7 and just used the free uograde to 10. I'll check out more Lenovo stuff. Thanks!
Gavin Thompson
I know you're sad and jealous about your pitiful existence, but some people actually have desirable skills and can command bargaining power over their jobs.
Nathan Carter
Just FYI my i5 8400 runs at 35c idle.
Kevin Morales
Nobody on Yea Forums wears a suit to work, assuming they even have a job.
They do care when they have to go through the thunderdome of autism that is the security approval process, getting anything through it is hard enough and faggots looking for luxury will just get shut down. Security is taken extremely seriously here, trying to get around the policies will result in some incredibly unpleasant investigations where even C-levels won't be spared.
Hudson Allen
Everybody's gonna know ur the sickest kid on the block lugging that thing around in the open. Epic tan, bro.
Kayden Harris
>work laptop >buying a gaming laptop with 'l337 gaymur" aesthetics There are models that don't have the retarded gamer look while packing some heat inside. Don't forget to undervolt after getting whatever you end up getting though.
I do, but only because it's company policy. But it's cheap shit and ill fitting.
alienware won't support their new swappable GPU standard because they won't release it to the public domain
Don't bother with anything that you can't swap mxm modules on.
Clevo is a good option.
Zachary Ramirez
correct answer: just a dude looking for advice on a gaming laptop
Cameron Bailey
that's a Dancase A4
they're way past the kickstarter, it's for sale on sfflabs for almost two years now
Easton Brooks
also don't get a sshd, they're a meme, if you have 4k to spend you're better off getting 1tb of nvme storage in ONE slot (if you raid 0 ssd's you're an idiot) and one 2tb hdd for your 3.5 inch bay
Thomas Thompson
Fucking imbecile you make me rage. Give me your superior email i`ll write complaint to him.
If your job is giving you money for work laptop, buy a fucking Lenovo thinkpad as you are supposed to, cretin.
Adrian Cruz
tell me about architecture
Camden Martinez
>alienware won't support their (own) new swappable GPU standard because they (themselves) won't release it to the public domain
