If you're looking at skateboards as only a transportation option, you're looking at them the in the wrong light imo. It's been an "extreme" sport and now it's pretty much a sport in general now with how established it became the past 2 decades.

Longboards are actually pretty comfy to get around on. It was "trendy" for a while, specifically in college towns but it works for anywhere within walking distance as a better alternative to actually walking. It's certainly not going to replace a car but if you're going a mile down the road it's better than a bike for convenience of size.
