One time, my dad got mad at my sister for adding another account to his computer. Because that meant she'd been using his computer without permission. My sister said she hadn't done it, but my dad didn't believe her because the account was "smartgirl63" and the only people in the house were him, his wife, their daughter, who was a baby, my sister and me so who the fuck else could it be? Something about it stuck out to me but I couldn't put it together at the time. His wife didn't say anything at the time and my sister got yelled at, I dunno if she got in worse trouble than that. Then like, fuckin' years later, I remember the argument and I remember where I heard it - "[email protected]" was Lisa's e-mail in an episode of the Simpsons. An episode all four of us had watched together like, less than a week before this argument had happened. I talked to my sister about it and I was like "dude, I think dad's wife set you up to get you in trouble" and she was like "Yeah, pretty much."

Eventually, my dad found out she was cheating on him, so he divorced her and got custody of our little sister.

Find an area you can get comfortable in, but not a place you'd want to sleep if that makes sense. Only take the materials you need to complete your work. Always try to study for a test at least two or three days before the test itself, and always get a good night's sleep before a test.

Also if you listen to music, make sure it doesn't have lyrics that you can focus on. And if you have questions, don't be afraid to ask the prof. So long as your sincere, profs usually won't mind talking after lessons if they have nowhere else to be. I actually had one prof bump me up from an 89 to a 90 because he was impressed that I stayed with the class after failing his diagnostic "this should tell you if you're ready to take my class" pre-test, and managed to keep up with the work and pass it. So get to know your professors. They like it when people give a shit.

Use whatever method you find best for taking notes, either writing or typing, flash-cards, word association, photographic memory, etc.
Don't be afraid to go ahead a bit and review meterial before class if you're going off a syllabus, don't be afraid to review earlier topics either.
Ask questions. Chances are having someone else explain it to you might help.
As boring as review is, it helps you get your fundamentals down, the hard part is applying it to whatever you struggle with.

Most importantly.
If you're getting distracted often, find a way to curb those distractions. Even if that means going to the library or somewhere else where you can't be at your own lesiure.

I can relate to an extent. I did really well in primary school (UK), and ok in secondary school. I remember being 14 and my mum thought I was revising for an exam and she came into my room and saw me playing Just Cause 2 and started ranting about how I'll never succeed at anything. I never did any homework or studying until I was about 16 or 17. I took maths, further maths and physics for my a-levels only because those subjects interested me, and I did pretty badly until the very end when I finally put the work in and got three B's. Then I went to a decent university (about 20th in the country) to do maths, gave up in second year partly for mental health reasons partly for laziness, then came back, repeated second year and got a first. getting a maths degree from an average university will probably make you more money than most degrees from the best universities.

anyway, I think the thing to remember is that your parents and authority figures as a youth will urge you to get the best grades in everything and make the safest choices. but if you're just not motivated to do this for whatever reason, just pick whatever interests you the most and get better at it until you're the best

You know what my parents did instead of allowing to fail? Well, because I was so smart and great and amazing, they fucking falsified my grades and moved across the world to fucking NY and blamed me for it every step of the way. They didn't like the USA and rubbed it on me when I wasn't getting straight As during my first semester when I barely spoke English. I was terrified of failure ever since then. I was already a perfectionist when it came to things I liked, but holy fuck. I can't handle shit now. I'm a useless fucking nigger without a job, a future, nothing.
