Prey is the closest game I've seen to being a System Shock game since 2. A ton of games simply ape SS2 (BioShock, Dead Space, Doom 3, etc) but Prey actually seemed to try really hard to ape the original. It was quite the admirable attempt.

The call was made after the project had already been killed, because Nightdive decided to be fucking stupid and turn the remake into a full reboot overnight against their stated intentions and blew through their budget. Games out of the box with non-PBR piplines will always look trash, thus giving it a lower quality value attached to it. Unreal by default is PBR, which out of the box will look better. Unity needed a lot of extra work to get it to look similar. Its just now they are catching up with their new pipelines. Unity is getting there, and looking way better. But simply wasn't just meme spouting. Like most stereotypes, there is a truth behind them all.

and plot structure. It wasn't a successor of the System Shock series so much as it was of System Shock 2 specifically, because all the same creatives worked on both and set Bioshock in a new universe, but the plot structure and twist were ripped directly from System Shock 2

Even then Unity in 2014 didn't have proper post processing (which you clearly don't know the terminology) to the same standard as Unreal did because of scenefringing not available, colorsceneformat being outdated, tonemapper flexability dealing with how the end frame is produced, was no implemented into Unity up until 2015. PBR allows for you to take real world understandings of everything and apply it to that material. Matching it together with standardize realism post processing brings a better product. Dumb fuck

A couple of years ago some old Looking Glass devs did a stream of SS1, which was extremely interesting to watch. But Hearing all their stories about working on 1 and 2 convinced me those games were absolutely products of that era, and a team of developers that were being constantly exposed to new and innovative ideas in video games and looking for ways to put them in their own projects. Nothing is going to make be able to recreate that magic, and I'd rather look for developers who are trying to develop and push new ideas like Looking Glass did rather than see some folks trying to replicate games from 20 years ago for fanbases who shit on any deviation from the original formula without hesitation.

You've been playing the game wrong. If you can't memorize the hot keys, every on screen element of the hud can be clicked and interacted with. Just toggle the cursor like you do with SS2's MFD mode.
People bash the hud but it's actually technically well made and makes the game fully compatible with touch screens.

I understand that they are trying to re-create the look of the original game visually. But I actually agree with you. UE4 is still a better suited engine for this project. The Unreal Engine was originality made for FPS's with the original Unreal.
But yeah, they are going a bit over the top with the post processing. Their original SS Remake Demo actually looked pretty damn good on Unity, but I remember it running like garbage. But it was using a 2016 build of that engine with the garbage OpenGL renderer, which was using OpenGL 4.2, or whatever outdated version Apple was using for OSx at the time. Apple really was the reason why performance was so garbage. Because they refused to update the OpenGL API in OSx, which gimped performance in Unity to remain compatible across the boards.

I've had many an amazing experience with SS2. Finished the first game twice but mostly out of respect for the series and thanks to the mouselook mod; for me, the game was too dated in some aspects, even if I appreciate what it did in others.
I really don't like how Shodan looks. The movement in the head feels off and her face is fucking atrocious. Surely you'd want to make 100% sure you got this right for your reveal?
