I did the HWL grind as a rogue. Didn't have a big fat guild to help me, didn't really have anyone to help me. I just chained battlegrounds and world PvP in between queue's.

I basically red = dead'd and would rack up tons of kills on Friday / Saturdays camping outside MC and Onyxia's Lair.

Well the one thing I'll say about locks is play horde. Alliance locks are insta fucked by wotf and the only way I could usually win is by saccing my VW and outlasting their damage.

It got better with levels but it was rough since most of the horde just seems to be immune to fear most of the time.

Farming heros blood in the plauge lands on my UD mage (frost specced) I took a break to get some gold and materials from the scarlet crusaders at their two little towers that go up the hill towards the monastery, I managed to pull all of one tower and proceeded to blizzard it down, while blinking/frost novaing and all that fun stuff without getting hit.
Get ready to rest, and then see a human paladin on the hill next to me who had obviously been watching, he claps, then points at the respawns at the first tower and runs off to fight them, we proceeded to take turns pulling riskier and bigger packs of mobs until I ended up dieing.
Doomhammer was fun.

Because if you don't, you will realize only too late that questing and exploring is 90% of the game's content, and you picked a class based on an endgame you will probably never even see. If you actually want to see the inside of any raid, let alone Naxx and AQ40, do yourself a favor and pick something fun so you can actually get there first without getting bored and giving up.

They won't, there isn't a true 'meta'. If you want to autistically speedrun to 60 and get your bis list you have the freedom to do so but everyone's experience will be shaped by their own guild. The best thing anyone can do is join a guild with like-minded people, I wouldn't be able to stand being in a guild for months with min-max autists while trying to get my own gear despite pre-planning most of my own build.
Even in nu-WoW you only really run dungeons with your guild, I can't imagine going guildless and pugging in classic after level 50. Every complaint about a specc's viability are completely pointless if you just join a guild on the basis of your prefered specc.

The heart of wow was the fact it was social media before social media was such an all invasive thing. I can't see that guild community growing again. I really hope I am wrong. But wow without it's heart is just the dead shell it is today without the sparkly new graphics and utility

But Classic WoW has the worst gear treadmill of them all... the delusion is going to hit you hard when you get back and quit in a month in the 30s.

it will be the closest thing possible to Vanilla but it wont be Vanilla because of the way the back end is set up first and foremost. Theres also the loot trading thing and mail... but its still going to be far closer than anything before.

I made new friends and leveled with all sorts in Nost because as a good MMO, it was required to join others to do most of the content including just leveling. I have no doubt the same sense of community will return. It has nothing to do with the people or the time period you played WoW, it has to do with the features and sense of progression. You will want to join up with people because even though you can slowly aggro 1 enemy at a time its faster and more fun to join that guy over there who is obviously doing the same quest, and pull more mobs and do more content together.

Honestly all this is true because of the simple fact that WoW was challenging. Maybe not in the Dark Souls style, but it was hard because health/mana/resource management was a thing, it took a lot of time to recover after two or three fights but you mitigated that a lot with other people, so you wanted to play with them. I think one of the key examples of where this game design philosophy has been lost is with modern MMOs. If you go play GW2, FF or any others you'll notice they have elite enemies, but all these elites are easily solo-able. The whole reason WoW had elites was because when you rocked up to Hogger or whoever at the normal level you find the elite, you cant beat it solo. So you party up because that was a key feature, and it taught you the valuable lesson of playing with others in an MMO is both fun and rewarding.

That sort of feature is lost in modern MMOs, but classic had it. And its the features and world that makes the community, not the community that makes the game.

Tirisfal, the uneven landscape of the zone was amazing. From collecting pumpkins, to fighting uphill near those mills only to descend into a crypt was fucking cool. You just need to roll a hunter so that you can farm. Made the mistake of leveling a healer in Vanilla, without having a farming alt. Ended up just smacking everything with Finkle's Lava Dredger, because it did more damage than my spells. Was surprisingly effective, too. Managed to run off gold farmers with my Dredger swagger.

I played a healer, and I loved tossing a single heal on people ambushed by rogues in AV. Completely fucked over the rogue, the second the stuns wore off, the rogue went down immediately. All burst, no staying power. They blew their load immediately, then cried in the corner if their target wasn't dead. A single heal is all it takes to fuck them over.

Warlocks were practically tanks, all their gear stacked huge amounts of stamina on it. Masters of controlling the fights. Imp for more stamina and staying power (especially if affliction), Succ for even more control. I sometimes saw felhounds out, but not often. Demonologist would bring Voidwalkers for emergency sacrifices, for even more staying power. A somewhat competent warlock could easily ruin anybody's day, though. I remember easily killing level 50 mages on my level 30 warlock, though I never leveled to 60 on that character before vanilla ended.
