I really liked this game, and played it competitively for many years. That said, it was the first time I'd ever gotten into a smash game with a competitive mindset, so I didn't really have a good frame of reference for good and bad design decisions. After a while I started playing other fighting games and realized how flawed sm4sh was, and then Ultimate made it abundantly clear that it was never actually a very good game. A great step forward, but it was lacking in tons of areas.
Ultimate is fantastic, though.
