EA didn't strike gold with Apex, they literally put their own money into making it something it wasn't.

I've been saying this since day 1, Apex was never going to last unless it received near constant updates that Fortnite has. Fortnite would have died a while back had it not turned into a virtual playground that gets new attractions and updates every other week.

Seeing as EA is on record having said that Apex's release was to push it out before Anthem, Division 2, and BF: Firestorm and that EA also said they never expected Apex to do this well, it's pretty much a combination of respawn scrambling to keep up and EA being blindsided and poorly managed.
