How does HGSS hold up? Are the other pokemon games on the DS/3DS worth picking one of those up? I have my old gameboy advance SP but I'd need to grab another copy of gold and a charging cord.

HGSS are my favorites. I am going to try to play some of the DS 3DS games but it is hard not to just go back to HGSS.

Holy shit, listening to the HG/SS counterparts after listening to these music clips, and they sound like fucking shit. So disappointing and emblematic of the problems facing Pokemon games nowadays: overdesigned; all flash, no substance, no charm whatsoever.

some things are definitely better on the remakes. like content, you have all the content that got cut for memory space reasons on the originals, like seafoam islands and viridian forest. also have a lot of added things like all gen4 pokemon and a more developed plot.
but some thingsare worse, like battle sprites have a better resolution and more colors but have shit animation, some music and aesthetics were ruined and other minor things, like the removal of ss aqua rematches.
it still is a pretty good remake, and if you don't have a huge nostalgia for the originals, I think they're the better option.

Easily my favorite games in the series. It's not flawless and some things they didn't fix from the originals are outright baffling.

Like making a whole new route for the Safari Zone to be included but not expanding areas that were cut down in the original due to memory constraints like Cinnabar or Viridian Forest. Or having dark type pokemon limited to Kanto and still having Mt. Silver's encounter levels at mid 40s.

HOWEVER. The game easily makes up for this with how it captures the feel of the original games. It doesn't ruin anything that was good about the originals and despite what a bunch of dumb zoomers are saying by trying to fit in with the """edgy 4channel""" crowd, the new music is anything but souless. There's even a key item in the game that switches the music back to the original OST. They even made new music with the legit authentic GBC sound front for areas they added. The post game even beyond Kanto is also huge.

There's just a lot of love in the game that mixes the new with what made the originals great in a near seamless way. Being directed by Morimoto also helps. He seems to be the best at understanding Tajiri's original vision as well as Masuda's when he directed Emerald. Dude knows how to bring out the best of each's style. And I say this with autistic level of nostalgia for the original GSC games.

gardevoir gets fairy type while gallade gets fighting type so just get the one with a type you don't have on your team yet

I played through it heres my team in all its tiny glory. Yes it was quite fun but I would say the OC do not steal elite four was a tad dumb. Besides that I had a fun time doing it. Keep in mind that levels scale based on badges. So have no badges expect every fuckin trainer in the world to have level 5 pokemon or so. Have 16 expect everyone to be a monster. As for is it the second coming of christ? Na if you played crystal youve gotten 90% of the experience. Houndour was my starter

Shinies look shittier then the original colors most of the time. I've encountered three non increased shinies in my life (Fearow, Geodude, and Pansage) and never used them since they were ugly as fuck. Even when I generate pokemon now I almost never make them shiny.

I don't know what it is about gen 3 sprites, but I just adore them. Maybe it is because I started making my own sprites around that time, which usually meant modifying GBA sprites in MS paint on the windows XP.

It’s something I’d love to do, but I’m too lazy to find them and have no way of playing them in a handheld. I tried emulating crystal clear on my pc but Pokémon is the type of game that doesn’t work well unless it’s on a handheld.

honestly, I feel like the gen 2 sprites are more detailed and especially comparing both Quilava sprites makes you realize how actually animal-like the earlier Quilava looks.
