Basically, the Elites were gaining too much influence within the Covenant so the Prophets orchestrated it so the Brutes would take their place in Halo 2. The Arbiter is disgraced and ends up allying with the humans, taking a small faction with him during Halo 3.
Post-Halo 3, the Elites are mostly on neutral terms with humanity aside from some Covenant remnants/pirates. The Elites have a whole civil war thing on their homeworld with the Arbiter leading the human-sympathizing side but I'm fuzzy on what happens with that shit. There are some humans studying their culture on their homeworld too, and many researchers learn the language.

It's been a long time since I've played, but basically one of the big higher up guys in the Covenant dies and kind of sends them into a power struggle.
Brutes replace the Elites, and then they decide to just remove the Elites from the Covenant entirely... by killing them all. So the Elites and the Grunts loyal to them fuck off but then realize that the Covenant wants to set the new Halo off; killing all life.
Something like that.

They jumped at the chance to have a coup and kill all Elites to replace them with Brutes, just as the Prophets thought they were about to win the war.
Turns out, making an enemy of half of your commanders is a bad fucking idea, and it cost them the war. So it went from being "Humans vs Elites Brutes Grunts Jackals Hunters Drones vs Flood" into "Humans Elites Grunts Hunters vs Brutes Jackals Drones vs Flood."
Halo's story was so great because it mixed 3 themes together in an incredible way.

Non of this is even an argument. It's completely anecdotal. But again, it's the fastest 343 game and even adds a non intrusive mobility upgrade. (Also i just checked climbing is less that an entire second, i completely understand that second can mean a lot, but if this was halo 4 you would be sol and forced to walk up the stairs instead of climbing for .75 seconds.)

Especially the part where you repel boarders on the outer hull of the ship, I thought it was really neat how everything was silent aside from things the Chief was physically touching. The Marine AI seemed to be the most competent it's ever been as well, I had those little guys survive to the end of the sequence/level on Legendary more than once while the Spartans ran in and got gunned down like retards.

Just play them and check out the Marathon story page on bungie.org. but basically if Marathon is an intricately plotted book (and it might as well be with how wordy it is) then Halo is the streamlined action movie adaptation. And I don't mean that as knock against Halo at all. Halo took a lot of what was great about Marathon and was able to reach a wider audience with it, just like the best movie adaptations.

You don't need to read any of the books to understand Reach because Fall of Reach has absolutely nothing to do with the game.
even stuff like having 1 launcher for all 4 games seems very un-pc. I think the modding community will rip these games to shreds and put them together again in a way they think makes sense. Classic main menus, classic armor customization etc, we'll see all kinds of weird configurations and separate communities for halo 1 2 and 3. All the player really needs to know is that she's a scientist that made Cortana, she doesn't have any other purpose in Reach or the rest of the games. It's just meant to be a neat origin story type of thing where the player gets to learn who made Cortana if they didn't know already.
Cortana wouldn't experience rampancy like a normal AI due to how unique of an AI she was, this was actually brought up in the books on how she would go through rampancy

The novels explain that being plugged into a computer the size of a planet can cause rampancy, Cortana shows all the signs of rampancy at that part of the game hence Chief asking her if she's alright which she replies with a menacing "Never been better"
Cortana is rampant at that point in the game but since she's unique in the way that she's from a flash clone she experiences rampancy differently.

They do, but they work around and tweak shit to fit the narrative they want to tell. Fall of Reach was always canon and just had elements of it retconned in Halsey's Journal to make Reach work. Reach itself has a lot of references to the book as well.

Like other anons have said I don't think Bungie ever read the books. Rampancy comes from their earlier series Marathon in which AIs go crazy due to time and external pressure. A larger computer is required as the AI grows more rampant but being plugged into one doesn't cause it. Cortana didn't show any signs of rampancy there other than being slightly snappier than usual.
The information you "demonstrated" is not from the game but a comic book released two years after halo 5.

What does it retcon about CE?
I never heard of Bungie caring about the books before Reach (and I guess a bit of 3 where Cortana IIRC references Fall of Reach with the coin flip), the Fall of Reach book was entirely extrapolated from one line in CE. For the most part it was a similar situation as with the Marvel movies and TV shows, ie a one-way canon. The games affect the books but the books don't affect the games. Like Coulson is alive in the Marvel shows but not the movies, there are other Spartans alive in the books but in the games Chief is the last one.
Absorbing metric ass-tons of information does cause rampancy though, or at least accelerate it.

Marathon literally takes place in the Halo universe with pre-fall humanity, and is just translated to modern terms when they reference planetary bodies. Halo 3 legendary ending was intended to hint at this, and Halo 5 is literally a soft sequel to Marathon based on Bungie's script. The only reason Halo 4 goes full wacko fanfic space opera mode is because there were minds at 343i who thought they absolutely had to make Halo "theirs" before they could re-engage the storyline as intended.
Bungie had two more Halo games in pre-production when they sold the rights. 343i used Halo 4 to make it into a second trilogy. Halo 6 will probably either confirm the ties to Marathon or be practically a spiritual successor to Marathon.

No, user. Marathon has tons of references to real history and is a sort of sequel to PiD which explicitly takes place in 1994. 343 has nothing to do with Marathon.
The didact falls into the composer and then it and his ship blows up. He died in Halo 4, but they said he "activated slipspace" sometime between him getting dissolved into pure data and his body being vaporized by his ship exploding.

Armour sets are unlocked from the beginning, though right now you can only use full sets (no mixing armour pieces). They'll probably change it though since Reach doesn't have full sets for every helmet.
The main progression thing is nameplates and getting to rank 50 in every game's matchmaking. There's like 100 different nameplates or some shit in MCC.

This is what makes Halo 1 so based. The interaction with all the marines really rooted the game in universe. I watched the "Halo Reach Movie" yesterday and there's barely any missions where you the marine/odst share a spotlight with you.

The problem with continuing after Halo 3 is that all major conflicts were resolved and neither covenant or human were in any real shape to wage war. So 343 had to hamfist a lot of shit that plays out like Hokuto no Ken 2 with EVEN MORE ANCIENT ALIEN ANCIENTS WHO ARE ALSO MORE POWERFUL.
Halo 4 should have been something small scale that builds up to something larger and maybe chief shows up at the end

This is what got me. Having the UNSC in particular be so big and mighty only 4 years after the war was ridiculous considering the losses they took. For starters, there should have been no infinity, and no spartan IV's, or at least no IV's being a much more public thing.
They should have brought focus back to the human colonies and made a game much more in line with Hunt the Truth. Bring in Human enemies/conflict and while also having a fractured covenant present in different ways via working with insurrectionists, aiding the UNSC, remnants fighting Humanity, etc.
And while this is going on, have a subtle and gradual serious plot build. Have the player discover the corrupt nature of ONI and actually get hunted by secret, super lethal Spartan IVs. Have the player discover reports of shit like planets going dark with implications of the Flood returning in full force. Have a new prophet leading the covenant in a new and insane way, with a goal of the great journey via sacrificing people to the flood. All through the eyes of a character like a now more seasoned Rookie or surviving Jun. And like you said, at the end of this period, have Chief found on the Forward Unto Dawn.
There were so many better ways to go about it, I sometimes wish 4 and 5 would be retconned, but I guess it's too late at this point.
How about put the Sabre in forge instead and have some fucking sick dogfights while an invasion game goes on?
