This guy gets it. Square flipped out because VIII wasn't unanimously praised the way VII was. Despite the fact that VIII was still a critical and commercial smash success, they didn't like that reviewers had minor critiques so they panicked and shat out IX to try to "return to form", and it shows considering IX was the worst PSX FF games by far and one of the bottom three FF games overall. It's devastating how inventive VIII was in comparison.

It amuses me every time how folks that shit on 8 aways keep going with the "if you do this strategy early on to break the game you will break the game". Play like a regular person and you won´t even notice those things. You might even find the game to be quite challenging if you don´t spend some extra time farming some magic. 8 is great in how you can literally set up how challenging you want it to be by the way you play it

People forget how innovative VIII was, especially for a series that was already stagnating pretty badly. IX was a huge step backwards in every single way, and didn't even have a strong narrative or likable characters to carry it. Zidane remains my least favorite MC, and there weren't any party members I liked at all. Yet to zoomers IX remains the best game because Zidane touched Garnet's butt once, that's about all they remember.

I hope they hire this guy to play Squall.

The only character I kinda like in 9 is Freya and mostly because I like the red mage X dragoon looks.

A friend of mine loves 9 but everytime he talks about why he likes the characters is because of some power feat they did. How vivi and steiner can be strong as fuck and shit like that. Liking a character just because it´s strong is the most boring thing in this world, makes me feel like I´m talking to a little kid

The only point you have right is that the card game is shitty. Triple Triad it's based and Tetra Master is garbage. 8's party members that aren't Squall and Rinoa effectively got written out of ther story after disc 1. IX's art style holds up a lot better than the realistic look VIII was going for and failed at due to hardware limitation, and tight class designs meant what party members you took actually meant something, as opposed to just junctioning Meteor on everyone's attacks and having Rinoa hit as hard as Squall. Frreedom to do whatever you want without any drawbacks effectively boils down to everyone having the same magic junctions with the only real reason to consider one character over another is what limit break they provide.

Vivi has the best character arc in any final fantasy. Amazing how you shit on the game because you make retarded friends, even though your compliment of Freya was purely for aesthetic reasons.

I don't mean to start an argument about the entire game of FFIX (I liked it until the Zidane goes to puppet netherworld).

But the game was fun to explore and looked great. My only real complaint with the previous post was saying the style was bad. If you hate minor chibi, okay I see you point. Otherwise, no, the style was extremely good.

Yep, Vivi has an amazing character arc. Steiner has a good character arc. Zidane has a good character arc. Garnet has a good character arc. Everyone gets good character development throughout the journey and you see them develop gradually throughout the game.

This stands in stark opposition to VIII, where the only character that gets any development is Squall, and his character arc isn't an arc so much as his character doing a complete 180. He goes from not giving a fuck about Rinoa and her advances at FH to having an autistic meltdown once she becomes comatose.

The stat differences aren't enough to matter. Having the same magic junctioned, Squall's attacks hit onky slightly harder than Rinoa'sz and Rinoa's spells hit only slightly harder than Squall's. Even then its a moot point because the junction system effectively discourages you from using your magic to begin with. As your stockpile goes down so do your stats.

Rinoa is in a similar place to Selphie, being an anoying little girl that don´t understand how serious and dangerous the world is only to face being turned into a threat to the world and finding herself completely alone for the first time in her life

Squall is the boy that couldn´t deal with abandonment and kept pushing eveveryone away. During the whole game he tries his best to not get personal with the party, even if he knows he does like then and that they are all his friends, he still tries to stay away. When shit goes down with Rinoa he just can´t keep up the facade and goes all out to protect what he cherishes

The junction system encourages you to make critical decisions. Sometimes you won´t be strong enough to deal considerable damage to a strong enemy but exploiting an elemental weakness might do the trick. Also, a few spell uses won´t hinder you that much for you to absolutelly not use any spell ever. Not like it´s hard to turn some cards into spells anyway

Not him, but I agree with FFIX being the weakest contender in the trilogy. VIII has some of the best locales in the whole series and the junction system, while broken easily, can be very fun to play with on a blind run.
I played through VIII for the first time without any knowledge of its exploits and found it a way better experience than IX. IX is good up to the lost continent and loses all medieval charm it has when you spend a whole CD on a continent with Dwarves while looking at nothing but dirt, rocks and trees (READ: brown, grey and green).

I sometimes use a gameshark to set everyone to lvl 100 at the start, so while I can draw higher level magic I have to deal with higher stats. Makes for a pretty rough challenge run
