The only Japanese games you could say are "dictating the industry" are Dark Souls and Breath of the Wild which were lauded specifically for adopting Western elements in ways that other Japanese games haven't for decades.

Look, I'm a weeb, but the guy was right. The Japanese industry at the time had no indie scene to speak of outside of VNs; the big publishers aside from Nintendo were at the absolute height of cluelessness, using slavedriving methods to churn out low quality shit with DLC and online policies that could make EA blush; and basically everything in between was stuck in the PS2 era in terms of design and resorted to pandering to otakus.

It was embarrassing for a community that in the early 00's was at the top of the AAA making Western publishers look like a bunch of greedy retards who didn't care about quality, while also producing indie PC masterpieces that literally inspired Fish like Cave Story and La Mulana, to sink to basically being an industry joke in the 360 era.

FEZ was such a pleasant game and it's a real shame Phil couldn't handle the bantz.
Still, I don't believe for a second that we will never see a FEZ II. I don't know how much time Phil needs to cool off. 10 years, 20 years I'll wait as long as it takes. It's not as hopeless as other projects that may never see the light of day. Projects where massive companies have to get the rights from other massive companies and then convince just the right combination of devs to devote years of their life to complete it.
FEZ II just requires Phil Fish to have one good day and decide maybe he overreacted a bit.

Fez was a below average platformer with a neat gimmick; it wouldn’t have even been released in 1993. But back in 2005-2012 it seems like people were rediscovering 2D games so oldfags like me had to keep shaking their heads at these subpar platformers getting all this attention for existing. And what games were popular seems to be driven by which dev did the most talking.

It’s no secret the Japanese game industry had a rough go if it in 2006-2012 or so, but I still think the problem was massively overstated and treated as structural. When in reality it was just a tough transition; the entire industry moved basically to the PC way of doing things which was dominated by western devs. Japanese studios had to learn on the fly; Nintendo admitted their studios had a lot of problems transitioning to HD with the Wii U and thah was something every other dev was dealing with earlier.
