>ugh I wish arena shooters came back
>no, not this one it's too much like Quake 3
>no, not this one it's too different from Quake 3
why arenafags pretend to like the genre? Even when Dusk came out the multiplayer fucking died almost instantly
Ugh I wish arena shooters came back

They're just posers who want to feel superior to people who play other shooters.
If you're have an itch to play the game, you will play it.
They don't want arena shooters to come back, they want to be young again
It's mostly because there's not enough oldfags to care. Young kids don't want multiplayer that's fun anymore, it's gotta have a progression system and endless grinding. Quake champions is a fun multiplayer game with a tacked on progression system that's completely unsatisfying. They also really care about popularity and genuinely won't be interested in playing a game because it's "dead" even if they'd think it's fun.
Dusk has shit maps, and allows you to hit top speed way too quickly.
the netcode is shit
Are you implaying quake champions is anything like quake 3?

>why arenafags pretend to like the genre?
Arenafags or epeen whiners? I duel in quake live regularly (waiting for QC to fix its shit and Diabotical to come out) and I love it, it's the ultimate 1vs1 FPS.
Actual arena fags are still playing the staples, and they will for a long time still. shit's fun.
no one really enjoys playing arena shooters. meme genre if there ever was one.
Most Quake Live players don't mind or can deal with the design changes to QC from Q3/QL, but the poor netcode, and the many problems it's had on the technical side has killed a lot of interest in it. At this point the game is as close to dead as QL is anyways, so a resurgence isn't really a possibility. I'd still sooner play QC than any of the shooters available that have a player base. That being said even if the game had no technical troubles, I'm not sure if it would've taken off, I think people just aren't interested in shooters that are fast-paced with skill-based movement and the most demanding style of game aim-wise.
Why do people compare it to Apex? From what I've seen it's just another shitty batte royale and has nothing to do with quake arena gameplay.
I used to encounter a shitload of players who accused me of cheating, it doesn't happen anymore. Very few players would commit the hours it takes to stop sucking instead of playing some instant gratification babby shooters.
I'm a Q3fag and i don't even care about QC. Q3 is enough to me I wasn't even searching for a new arena fps to begin with. Q3 is and will be always my go to arena fps.
QC flopped the moment they decided to spend money on developing character abilities instead of perfecting the netcode.
It's faster paced than the other battle royales, has at least some semblance of skill-based movement, and winning isn't all about just camping - playing aggressively and using your movement to your advantage works out well. I know a lot of the competent QL players have been playing it, but really the game isn't comparable to any Quake game.
It'd help if there were more players so they can just play with each other, and more fun modes and fan-made fun maps like you could have in Q3A for more casual people to enjoy. And yeah people don't seem to really call people cheaters anymore, but I haven't played QC much since the first tournament they had.
quae champions is shit and it's nothing like an arena shooter
damn I like the design of that weapon.
You can tell who is pretending to even like or want to play the game when they complain about the netcode which actually is and was great across multiple iterations. The engine is great and the physics are realistic, the game looks great, the sound is great and is intentionally tweaked for balanced for gameplay purposes. Everything is great and there except for you. These people will play anything BUT afps and continue to make up excuses. Keep shilling that retarded debilotical game that is dead on arrival.
People only liked arena shooters because there was nothing better to play at the time.
Once CS and other more fun shooters rolled out, everyone dropped them and never looked back.
>engine is great
>game just crashed 3 times while trying to load into a map, even though I have a 1080, 7700, and 16gb of ram
You'd have to be retarded to believe the other things you said as well, except the game does look good. It's still decently playable though in it's current state.
CS is garbage, you're a low IQ subhuman.
zoomers are allergic to high skill ceilings
they basically did everything right to be able to get a big audience and revive the genre
bethesda as a publisher didnt invest enough in the game with manpower, money and advertising
early access games were "in" at that time and the way to gain popularity
everything you can complain about the game superficially you could use to complain about any other top 10 most played games and fps
all the threads are filled with stupid shit posted by low iq posters passing by
guess people and I use that term people lightly have incredibly shit taste in what is fun
i played the new quake for a while and it was ok, but it ran like absolute ass and had long loading times.
Then i realized that there were still some people playing tribes ascend and came to the realizationt hat i only played quake because its "kind of" fast.
Now i uninstalled and play Tribes to scratch that itch, since tribes is the best multiplayer shooter out there.
Not a consistent player but the game is decent and I never encountered some of the slowdown and bugs that other people claim to encounter. My only issue is the champion based gameplay. No one asked for that in a quake game.
qc is unoptimized but the game itself.
walking backwards on stairs is still aids though. worst thing about the engine imo. all stairs should just be slopes.
I wish the best players were still playing Quake Live instead of Champions, duels look really boring in Champions for some reason. This ruined the last QuakeCon for me.
What is the difference between arena shooters and halo?
Halo is slow and designed to be played with a controller
This, in fact I'd stretch it to video games as a whole: anybody who claims to enjoy one is actively practicing self-deception
Didn't HiRez kill Tribes a while ago?
I'm only into these for some quick fun.
The only reason I like the older games is that they are just so fucking smooth. There's absolutely zero lag, it's easy to achieve absurd framerates and it feels like moving the camera around is the easiest thing. Modern games, I suppose because you can't get such high framerates, just feel "heavier". No mouse smoothing, no acceleration but somehow it's almost as if there's a tiny bit of input lag not present in there. CS:GO is the only modern game I know where I can get next to no lag either.
Shit I like how QC looks for instance, but I feel slow and heavy, even at really high framerates.
It's probably your brain processing all the extra graphix new games tack on to their enviornments and weapons
Arena shooter fans don't actually like arena shooters.
They only like the feeling of being part of an elite group of "oldfag chads who don't need no time to kill" who are frustrated with their own lack of reflexes and can't be happy
FUCK
YOU
>entrance wound doing that much damage
please keep the gore hyper realistic thank you
I'd actually legit play more QC if the game had a server browser or at least didn't kick you out back to the main menu after a match ends
Psuedo-authoritative declarations like this are stupid.
Pic rel will always be true.
>CS:GO is the only modern game I know where I can get next to no lag either.
Damn, wish I could feel that on my toaster.
Why does Yea Forums hate him again, only because he's not fond of consoles?
> all stairs should just be slopes.
I don't know why every developer doesn't do this.
Halo is an arena shooter it's just a slow one.
I don't mind him now that he's dead.
Oh ok thank you
I like the combat but I dislike having to remember item timers and in general helplessly dying because unbeknownst to me my enemy had picked up an armor upgrade and I was at an disadvantage.
Other thing is halo has a two weapon limit. But beyond that it has the general design philosophy of
>No starting loadouts
>All weapons are map pick-ups
>Level is literally an arena
It's simple, they don't really wish for them to come back.
>no more server browser
>no more continuous games
>no more many game modes
>no more modding
>moba-like elements in a fps
>many players still have issues running the game
>fun game to play, but everything around it is shit
Geez I wonder why actual Quake 3 fans don't like QC.
QL was ok being a free browser game and would be still played today if bethesda weren't such greedy assholes.
You don't even need to change the engine for that, just put a clip brush in the map editor.
because there aren't arenafags
you've been brainwashed into thinking that everyone wants arena shooters, when in truth nobody truly does
quakefags are still playing quake 3 to this day, and they will play those games until the end of the universe
quakecon is still a thing
quakegods are still streaming on twitch and kicking asses
all of those are turbo boomers well into their 30s
people just want to show off their "fps creed" by pretending to like arena shooters and feel bad that there aren't any "new" games
just go play quake live or q3
then proceed to get your teeth kicked in by people that have been playing quake for 25 years now
people actually interested in arena shooters are already playing their game of choice with their small niche community
pretend-boomers will moan and whine about "no new releases" yet still shit on new releases because arbitrary reasons
They did come back, they just call the battle royals now.
Arena shooters are fun because of movement and precision but they usually fall flat because it's just you running around the map and trying to find someone to shoot.
Multiplayer games based on objectives like Enemy Territory is obligatory for me.
most of those things have been fixed already
you're 4 years late, user.
QC is a good quake game now, if it wasn't for the horrible netcode
underrated
Has the performance been fixed? I haven't played since they added the battle pass cancer.
There is a server browser now?
Continuous lobbies?
Modding?
Tons of maps?
Tons of game modes?
People aren't complaining about performance anymore?
Plus horrible netcode like you said, truly great for a fast paced fps... Goes with the horrible performance, because playing a fast paced game at 30fps and shit netcode is truly the way to play those games.
Hit the nail on the fucking head. I had an at length conversation with an user two weeks ago about old HL1 and 2 mods, and he kept making excuse after excuse about why he couldn't play them anymore. It all boils down to wanting to be young.
>talking about arena shooters
>posts a hero shooter
That user is just a poser. I literally played MMod yesterday, and Entropy: Zero a few weeks ago.
>Plus horrible netcode like you said, truly great for a fast paced fps... Goes with the horrible performance, because playing a fast paced game at 30fps and shit netcode is truly the way to play those games.
that's legitimately one of the very few issues still within the game, and the reason why i'm not playing it currently.
we can preach and hope they pull their heads out of their asses and start fixing that shit, instead of pumping the game with more cosmetics and retarded champions.
Yes. As with other genres that died for a reason, there is nothing stopping people from playing Quake or any of the fairly authentic spiritual successors if it's so great as they claim to believe. It's a classic case of a mismatch between what gamers say and what gamers do. It's easy to say that Quake is a great game, but it's harder to muster enthusiasm for playing such an outdated and simplistic game in 2019. Because they have every fucking opportunity but never do, just talk.
The lesson of course is to never ever listen to what gamers say they want.
>such an outdated and simplistic game
meanwhile, in reality, it's the exact opposite where every modern "gamer" wants instant gratification in the form of skinner-box "press button to awesome" character abilities and muh graphix.
Here you are talking about how great Quake is (by comparison). Not playing it. Hmmm.
Yes me not playing quake at this very moment is indicative of it not being a good game. Great logic.
quake 3 is literally shit but not horrible i preferred wolfenstein enemy territory more since i like objective based games and UT felt more natural for me for a shoot em all typo
But it's not just right now is it? You don't have to be honest with me, but you should be with yourself.
people are complaining about the dumbest shit, I can't even finish most of these sentences without laughing
I'm not going to buy your game, Bethesda. Stop trying so hard to convince people that they're posers if they don't buy it.
Yeah because if you don't get over 2 decades worth of play time out of a game it must be bad, right? Has nothing to do with every new iteration being shit.
how is this a rebuttal to what he said, you drooling retard?
found the casual plebbitor. I bet you love borderlands and rick&morty
Quake Champions is free though.
>hasn't played ET
don't ever post here again
I'm certainly not saying that Quake didn't have any merit in its time. I'm just tired of this idea that us collectively moving on from outdated genres is some sort of injustice to gamers.
I actually have a code where I don't take people who use certain words more seriously than they deserve. Skinnerbox is one of those.
I just watched some gameplay on yt and it looked kinda shit to me. Looks like some retarded hero shooter with poor graphics, quake 3 felt more serious.
I might be wrong tho, have not played it myself.
Yet you continually use this vague rhetoric about it being "outdated" without even going into any sort of depth to explain how it is. Is it outdated because there is no sprint button and you can't aim down sights? Is it outdated because every weapon isn't boring and hitscan?
Zoomers don't feel like learning the maps and timings. You don't need to know anything to play the fotm BR shooter
Hero powers in multiplayer games are literally skinner-box. You get rewarded for pressing the button.
>we can preach and hope they pull their heads out of their asses and start fixing that shit
My point exactly, I'm not the one 4 years late but QC is. They've proven incapable of fixing such basic and important shit.
Base gameplay is fun (because it's Quake), but everything else is half-assed and that's why QC is driving straight to a wall.
I don't really care about the whys. My only point is that people can play Quake, any of the decent Quake-likes or the new Quake with heroes and so on, and they just don't. Meanwhile, people are talking a hole in my head about how great Quake is and how they miss it. It just doesn't add up when they could just go play but don't.
You're fucking clueless and a wannabe. I bet you think you know a lot about how computers and game engines work because you spend a lot of time playing windows games and surfing the net.
>quake is outdated
>but i won't tell you why!
You talk a lot, but say so little.
I have some ideas but it's really not the point. If Quake was popular and now isn't, what changed? The game's the same so I guess it must have been the times.
Quake and other arena shooters have mostly been LAN games for me.
The skill ceiling is so high that there's not much point playing against people online, because you'll just get completely dismantled every time.
Cube 2: Sauerbraten is pretty fun to play online in instagib, though.
Neither of those are Zombie Master.
>just you running around the map and trying to find someone to shoot.
Nah, there's lots of stuff to do if you want to play correctly. Like denying areas for your opponent or counting the time until items respawn so you can pick them up instantly/before your opponent and stuff like that.
Also CTF in arena shooters is heavily underrated.
Dusk had a multiplayer mode? I was just interested in the single player.
Every attempt at resurrecting the arena shooter fails because they keep doubling down on the things that drove people away from them in the first place.
Halo is going to be huge on PC because a casual arena shooter is a niche that isn't being filled right now.
Bingo, arenafags are like Nintendies but less delusional: they WANT to go back, but unlike the Nintendies who can pretend he's 12 by playing Mario, the arenafag doesn't get that feeling from new arena shooters.
The problem with arena shooters is they haven't really progressed much since Quake 1 and UT. CPMA did nothing but collect the various movement mechanics from across the series in one package -- and Quake 3 itself did nothing but consolidate the weapon selection. Onslaught and Bombing Run were the best parts of the UT series but they got shunned by esports fags even though they were basically THE reason to get UT2K3 and 2K4 back in the day.
You Quakefags are just as cancerous as the CSfags you hate so much. Your games will never move forward or regain the limelight until you accept and push for change.
>Toxxic, Xonotic, Reflex
Played all, because I was a gullible fuck, and they were ALL TRASH
>UT4 Alpha
Great game, but ABANDONED by the devs long before it had a chance to gain any sort of major popularity. The devs thought they could get modders to make the game for them for free, and then just said fuck it when it didn't happen.
>Quake Live
Is just Q3A and had retarded load-out systems and bullshit. Why would anyone play QL when Q3A still exists?
No
Blood gulch is way too big
Fuck you, no, smaller maps dont count automatically. Halo was for lots of people, not 1v1. Its for consolefaggots!
>ABANDONED by the devs
Yeah Epic should have poured time and money into UT4 when it couldn't even get a 32 player server filled up on weekends and all the other arena shooters in recent memory flopped hard.
Epic should have planned and executed a project from start to finish instead of assuming other people would make their game for them.
It's still in "alpha". In 2019. They didn't even complete the game to a beta status before fucking off and abandoning it.
Kill yourself.
Why would any servers fill up if the game was in pre-alpha? No one wants to play a barebone skeleton of an unfinished game.
You nailed it, OP. I supported and played almost every arena shooter I could get my hands on in the past 10 years. I played Reflex when there were only 2 servers with players. If every person on Yea Forums that virtue signaled about arena shooters actually played them, then we'd have enough people for a healthy community. It's a damn shame.
>no ADS
>no real consideration for cover
>instant health and armor pickups
>bunnyhop around trying to get headshots on another bunnyhopper
>basically only relies on reflex and map knowledge
Because arena shooters are teaspoon shallow bland boring games that people only played because there wasn't much else.
There were 3 finalized maps, and most weapons were in. It was fully functional, if you wanted to play an arena shooter. Arenafags are an entitled bunch, why did Epic HAVE to keep going with a game that the community showed no interest in, instead of going ahead with Fortnite, which returned a million times more revenue per man hour spent on it than UT4 ever would have? UT4 would have been just as dead as any other arena shooter in recent times, if it could break 1000 players on Friday night it would have been a miracle.
he's just a retard and posting how special he is, like most other people in the thread
why are all the battle royale games so popular then? awful games like ark etc., dead by daylight, friday the 13th. garbage like that is the norm.
people still actively shit on this game and try to kill it, "its dead, its dead, its dead" for 2 years now.
while the quake potats can't understand that this is it. you're not doing yourselves any favors.
Epic thought "ooh, let's capitalize on the growing interest in e-sports without spending any money." UT4 deserved to fail. And Fortnite was going nowhere until they branched into battle royale.
>If every person on Yea Forums that virtue signaled about arena shooters actually played them, then we'd have enough people for a healthy community
These threads can barely crack 70 unique IPs, the hell kind of multiplayer community is considered "healthy" that measures in the double digits?
>why did Epic HAVE to keep going with a game that the community showed no interest in, instead of going ahead with Fortnite
Except no one showed any interest in Fortnite either, you dumb fuck. They completed Fortnite, then made a new game mode called Fortnite Battle Royale when no one cared, instead of just making a proper game out of UT4.
Also, I tried to go on the forums and offer my 3D skills to help develop UE4 in 2016, but none of the devs were there. No one could answer.
>posers
Fucking this. I'm literally the only active user in UT threads. Too bad /vr/ sucks now.
bethesda is a bit retarded and slow
brink finally went free to play after 5+ years of people asking them to and it was half-assed and the corpse is at last now at peace
you have to INVEST time and dedicate money in advertising and developers
it really is pathetic that quake champions doesnt have more players
>Arenafags are an entitled bunch
For asking for a finished game? Are you really that mentally challenged?
I got my good amount of hours in UT4 even more than I got in QC but the game was barebones, the netcode was a mess even compared to QC , I clearly remember being hit by rockets and taking no damage, even with all that I got hundreds of hours out of the game before going back to UT2K4 because I really love UT but no matter how much I play, I can't stop a game form dying
Vs. what exactly? Random luck-based gameplay on top of that?
Battle Royale and other modern FPS games can be boiled down similarly to the same greentext you've provided. The only real difference is there are mechanics that give bad players a leg-up overall and that's why they're massively popular. It's a matter of taste between the haves and the have-nots, those who have skill want it to be about skill and those who don't want to marginalize the skill gap.
You and other arenafags are absolute entitled retards. A tonne of games filled with bugs and no content get massive player bases just look at Steam's top played, Fortnite BR was surpassing 1mil concurrent users when it first launched with one map and just a few weapons, much like other BRs. Meanwhile, UT4 with 3 finished maps and most other stuff in was barely hitting 20 concurrent players.
>instead of just making a proper game out of UT4.
WHY would they ever do that for a game that can't fill a single server instead of going with Fortnite BR? In case you didn't notice, Epic did pick the right choice with it, Fortnite couldn't have been more successful.
You faggots just want a game made for you with huge development effort and budget, even though there's 1000 of you at best and 75% won't play it regardless.
>there are only 70 people on Yea Forums tops who would play arena shooters
Perhaps the issue is your "double digit" IQ.
>For asking for a finished game?
You got plenty of finished games, they all ended up with under 100 players a month after release. Also, a company works on revenue, so why would a company spend money on making a game for you people who won't be happy unless they deliver a finished extremely high quality product when there's millions of others who will gladly play BRs with just one map and a few guns?
>70
More like 7, judging by every arena shooter in the last decade.
Your reading comprehension is abysmal.
They made Fortnite before they made Fortnite BR, and no one wanted it. They did that instead of working on UE4.
Also, "one" map in Fortinte BR is way more content than a map in UE¤, you dumb cunt. Three little maps for an arena shooter is just tragic, and it's just bullshit that there were three complete ones. There was ONE complete map, and the rest were just boxes and placeholders. What kind of apologetic cuck are you?
>It's a matter of taste between the haves and the have-nots
The "haves", the ones on the right half of the bell curve, moved onto more stimulating genres like strategy, 4x, grandstrat, sims, etc. as they grew up and out of twitch-based shooters like arena shooters. Don't kid yourself, the only difference between arena shooters and BRs is that BRs are more strategic and more varied (that RNG you mention, that's what helps the game not be a repetitive slog), both are still firmly in the "have not" territory.
Why exactly were they trash?
Don't bother, so many cucks in this thread I'm beginning to think shills are a real thing
>A company work on revenue
True but that isn't arena player's fault, is as simple as there isn't that many of us anymore, most people that like arena shooters are +35 years now with work and kids, they can't play all day like before of time
Horrible optimization, disgusting motion blur, FOV couldn't be changed, extremely messy visuals, bad netcode, etc., etc.
Titanfall 2 was actually super solid and innovative for shooters, would have been amazing if they had dared to extend time to kill and put items around the maps.
Can confirm I am a paid shill, I get paid to shill against a genre with a fanbase composed of 20 or so bitter boomers who complain on imageboards.
Blood gulch is still an arena. It's just a big arena.
just stopping by to tell you you're retarded and if you could stop posting in these threads
thanks
You're projecting and no, you're not a "have".
It’s honestly this
While I do wish we got popular new FAST shooters I was never one of the grognards who spent 1000 hours in quake deathmatch and feel like those people have just let themselves be swallowed up by time
Ads, cover, and any skill other than "reflex and map knowledge" are how you get shallow, bland boring games.
Not everything needs to be a bhop mandatory quake fest to be good, but those functions you mention do everything they can to harm deathmatch style games.
i know the stairs not being slopes isn't an engine issue, but walking backwards on the current stairs is. go try it. i don't know why nobody is complaining about it
>a fanbase composed of 20 or so bitter boomers
QC had like 20k players when it came out on Steam, not bad for such a niche genre but yeah it's the bitter boomer's fault everyone deserted it.
Tell your employer to start fixing their game instead of blaming it on the players loyal to the license.
>Why didn't you arena fags didn't play toxxic, reflex ect
Most arena fags are old and don't fallow much of gaming news, how are they gonna know something like a weird indie quake wannabe exist? I fallow gaming news and didn't know they existed until they were dead
>QC
A lot of quake players got put off by champions, bad netcode, bad loading times , little to no maps and no CF recently
>UT4
No one knew it existed, everything was a placeholder and slow updates
I got at least 200h in UT4 and like 20 in QC both games were killed by shitty netcode and slow updates
>that RNG you mention, that's what helps the game not be a repetitive slog
This is how you spot the casual. They pretend welfare mechanics like RNG keep games interesting while they play the same BR map over and over and over and over and over again, but in reality they defend them because they're trash players who benefit from the smaller skill gap.
It's the exact same thing with WoW Classic. People seriously need to get over it.
I love this say no one is interested but when someone got a UT2K4 server running for Yea Forums it filled immediately and we played for 4 hours
We got a good fast shooter just a few years ago with Titanfall 2 but Yea Forums hated it for no reason other than "ew it's made by EA"
doesn't mean anything, dota clones always pulled numbers
Yea Forums hates everything , Titanfall got /tfg/ running for a long time and we are back again after the push that Apex gave it
Yep, "no steam no buy" valve kikes kill another franchise.
This is why Epic shaking up PC digital distribution is the best thing that could have happened.
well they dont support it but you can still play it.
theres like 20 or 30 plyers total which is enaugh for one or two good servers.
Most of them are private to keep the hackers out.
the best thing that can happen for pc is if everyone working for epic including yourself suddenly died tomorrow
Seething valve drone detected
Hope you have all of those games you "own" backed up ;)
>sneething xdddd
great contribution you are to this little board
why did you post twice though
I wish I could run a UT2K4 server , last time playing with v was a blast
Arena Shooters were never and will never be meant for mass appeal
i guess you got the wrong guy, dipshit.
I wouldnt call a shill a person really
A shill for a dead fucking game with 20 people sitll playing, that as far as i know doesnt have monetization left, that got completley abandoned by the devs.
This has to be the most retarded shit ive read here all day.
the game is shit, I play and enjoy non-shit multiplayer games that reward skill and arent stupid overwatch hero shooters
pic related
me and tens of thousands of other neophytes enjoy this perfection of a game every day
the most retarded shit of the day appears every new time you post something it seems
the only thing that is dead is your brain and your english teacher that passed halfway though your semester
Nah, they did but literally everyone and the entire genre all outgrew them. CS had item economy and no respawn. BF1942 had vehicles, classes and objectives. Tribes had vehicles, artillery and speed.
Arena shooters aren't even comparable to fighters or RTS; those have/had a scene and have given birth to similar genres, Arena DM is basically a relic at this point.
Yea Forums hates successful people
>I play and enjoy non-shit multiplayer games that reward skill and arent stupid overwatch hero shooters
>plays a shit overwatch hero shooter that doesn't reward skill and calls it perfection
Imagine the mental illness
Unironically this. When I want to play an arena shooter, I just convince some friends to boot up UT99 or Q3 and we play. Because they're nostalgic. Nothing's going to give you that childlike nostalgia nowadays but the real thing.
quake champions beta is awful. existing arena shooters allowed players to hang around servers for hours, chatting and playing games. modern "quake" forces players to exit servers at the end of each relatively short game, with no socialization while the game is going. the entire "community spirit" has been utterly crushed in quake champions. the time to play (from starting the game to getting in game) is ridiculously high, and getting out of a game and back into a game is also ridiculously high. quake champions is a failure up to this point. instead of having persistent dedicated servers that players could control through voting or rcon type systems, id has opted to use dynamically started "cloud" servers, so each time somebody wants to play they have to go through atedious many-click process in order to start a duel. what was so wrong with queues? what was wrong with the old system?
nothing. it was "fixed" by meddlesome no-talent developers who don't actually care about the spirit of the game.
Except they didn't implement Onslaught and Assault, which were my favorite in UT2k4.
Also, UT4 sucked, didn't worked well on toasters, characters were fucking ugly to look, no robutts, server with shit ping, classic maps weren't there, UT4 was an internal fan project.
>SWAT4 MP was superior
>Siege
>the engine is great
You haven't played QC.
Arena Shooters suffer the same fate as RTS.
People scream and cry every day saying they want those genres back, but as soon as a new game in these genres is released, NO ONE FUCKING PLAYS IT!
>try quake champions
>no Clan Arena mode, the only playable mode for quake live
lmao
guess casuals can't handle just 1 life
for what it's worth, arena shooters in general have high barriers to entry that prevent mass-appeal for general consumers who aren't looking to stim-out learning the particulars of subtle movement skills. arena shooters also have plateau skill levels, meaning that the if two players are in the same tier and one masters some particular skill, that player is now virtually untouchable by the other. this creates a very segmented playerbase. another factor is that the game economy is much different from when arena shooters were more popular. the multiplayer options are exponentially greater than they were then, such that players are faced with an economical decision upon picking up an arena fps game: is it really worth investing my time in mastering skills in this game just so i have to climb various sheer cliff faces to reach the next plateau, or should i just play apex?
the answer is obvious to anybody who isn't trying to get cash from a promotional tournament sponsored by a developer, or to anybody who is looking for a specific arena fps experience (a very small number of people).
I think you haven't. Buy a computer from this decade
No wonder why QC failed, what is the point of having a mp focused arena shooter with ultra realistic graphics.
Onslaught was redesigned into Warfare. Same shit, but this time around there was an orb. It was both nice and annoying. Vast majority of time i spent on UT3 was in Warfare.
And regarding Assault. Half of it should've been in campaign. The other half in multiplayer. One of the best modes.
And then there was Bombing Run. Also a nice mode.
all we need is unreal tournament 99 live and things will be good again
I think Tribes:Ascend had the best balance, it pleased skilled and unskilled players, was different compared to UT, but, it had an arena mode.
iirc the only reason Quake was popular in the first place was pretty much because it was one of the only multiplayer games to play back when LANs were getting started.
Nah. A proper new Unreal Tournament. With Campaign, Tournament, Warfare and Instant Action.
Campaign - a nice long 20-40 hour campaign, co-op including. Can be considered a whole game on its own.
Tournament - E-sports without e-sports cancer. Multiplayer team comabat. Teams compete against each other for the title of the best.
Warfare - same as above, but with vehicles/mechs, a lot of space and expanse - space battles included. Some modes are like Planetside, some like Starcraft (commander to upgrade base/provide supplies; troops to fight), some like Quake Wars.
Instant Action - all the modes, all the co-op, custom mods/maps all the good stuff from previous games including semi/non-permanent teams for multiplayer.
All four major modes can be considered separate, but come in one nice big bundle.
Now that would be something.
But arena shooters continued to do pretty well even in the wake of the immortal Counter-Strike and a few years in the Halo/paradigm-shift-to-consoles era.
I don't really think you can pin it on one thing or the other, but rather just a big clusterfuck brought about by people interested in making one don't have the power or backing of a major publisher(think about how many arena shooters were put on kickstarted or alpha'd on Steam to be a successor to all the speedy FPS and then just died on launch), and the single one that does have something resembling major publisher support, QC via Bethesda, is a mess.
I'd be inclined to agree but MOBAs have the same mandatory learning, plateau based skill, and segmented playerbase, but don't face the same problems. Arguably this can be attributed to free to play but its hard to say.
dusk's MP wasnt made with the intent of 'reviving' AFPS. you know it wouldnt work, i know it wouldnt have worked.
t. a retard with inside info
>making a game that irks both old and new players
That's an achievement.
>all that
>30 active players 2 months after release.
>arena shooter reboot comes out
4 maps
guns are fucked
character-based abilities
netcode blows dicks
game lost in early-access development limbo
etc
it's always a shitshow to some degree
You're right but that's kind of a different situation because MOBAs also basically supplanted RTSs in terms of being the big multiplayer strategy thing, especially since they were essentially born out of RTS multiplayer mods.
Shooter audiences are proven to be a lot more fickle and have wandering attentions.
Doubt it. Considering the content volume, content quality and release time will be crucial.
So long as the game satisfies desires of the player base, its going to have plenty of players.
Nobody talks about it, but TF2 arena is a lot of fun.
A damn shame almost all the good arena server shut down.
i put 80 hours into QC but realistically it had significant problems that were never addressed. time from boot to play was way too long. ~5min compared to Q3A's ~15 seconds. Matchmaking was non-existent, making it impossible for nu-normies to get on board.
>TF2 Arena
what
Last time I checked it was dead.
I just want this fucking game to do away with the hero shooter nonsense then I'd play it
unreal tournament needs better ai than the literal "computer knows where your cursor is on the screen and will literally dance around it unless you click aim"
Wasn't Lawbreakers essentially an Arena Shooter with a tacked on class system and launched DOA?
TF2 used to have a medium sized arena community and has tons of maps custom made for 10vs10ish arena.
Lotus Arena used to be very popular along with a few other arena servers a few years ago. The community dried up when valve axed the server list.
(ahem)
FUCK malcolm and FUCK iron cash
ouch
