Good. Hope they do a better job interconnecting the stories and explaining why the characters would even travel together next time.

I hope they improve on character interaction and don't just hide them away in missable slideshows in the pubs and specific party combinations during quests. I'd love party specific quest lines and Chrono Trigger combo moves unlocked through character bonding.
I hope they add more attacks for the different classes. Also attack combintions would be cool
Is this different from the game they're releasing on phones?
I'd like for things to feel a bit less formulaic. After a while the original Octopath just felt like going through the motions.

They implement some sort of overarching story that isn't a lore dump in an optional boss area, put some environmental interaction in the game, a better way of keeping track of optional quests, better end game gear like ultimate weapons.

It won't have any of those things. Purple chests will come back and force you to always have that one thief in your party always.

I'll 100% another game and bitch about it in the end despite loving it while I played it.
Won't buy it after the disappointment the first one is. And I bet SE, retarded as they are, will do a Bravely 2 and change the composer, aka the only worthwhile thing in Octopath 1
Is the game actually good or just aesthetic bait?
Real Question Yea Forums: I haven't gotten around playing this game yet, I've looked into it a lot and realize the places it faults. Does this mean I can wait for the new Octopath game and skip Traveller?
This. It felt more like a puzzle game than an RPG as well.
Neat, hope they can improve on the first one.
Why invest in a dead genre?
1. Better story
2. No more hallways
the way it looks (outside of the enemy sprites) is probably one of the worst things about it
>dead genre
OT actually sold super well, despite having really glaring flaws.
Give me a gambler or summoner character and I'll be happy
just because the poster child franchise is shitting the bed doesn't mean the whole genre is dead.
Just dump the separate storyline shit and go for something like Suikoden in which everything is kinda about the composition made by secondary stories.
>OT
>grindy
Should I buy it? It caught my eye when it was released but I was unsure
I fully expect them to fuck up everything with the shitty mobile game and end up canceling the switch title. Maybe see a mobile port 2-3 generations later.
>2. No more hallways
Oh shit you're right. I didn't remember how bad the movement-through-dungeons was in this game. The diorama gimmick gets rotten fast in those.
Fuck the open-world concept and just make it a linear RPG following the cast actually interacting with each other. At the very fucking least make it so the stories change slightly depending on what your party is and what you've done s far
You can stop pretending, turdigrade
For anyone asking if they should buy/play OT: if you really like turn-based combat and don't care as much about the story or characters, yes. Otherwise, skip it.
>>OT
>>grindy
Yeah, I don't get it. How the fuck is it grindy aside from a couple hours in the postgame if you want to be super-prepared for the final boss? If you ever grind in the main game you'll be overleveled for all of it.

I hope it won't be trash like the first game.
Hopes:Tactics style gameplay and more hidden classes
Why couldn't every character look like this at least in battles instead of just enemies? One of the main things that annoyed me.
It will just be the console version of the mobile game.
There wouldn't be enough room and it would honestly look weirder. Big enemies makes them look more intimidating and it's tradition/nostalgic.
Because it's look bad and give the enemies no presence. The devs probably more about this.
Fuck me, my hand eye coordination's bad:
"it looks bad and gives the enemies - The devs probably know more"
>Because it's look bad
>Giving detailed sprites to your main cast looks bad
In this kind of game and with this kind of intended contrast with enemies? Yeah, it will look off-balance.

I hope Square Enix doesn't fatigue the IP too quickly and takes their time developing this one. Worried a bit though considering the state of how things went for BD.
Which looks like shit
No, it really doesn't.
I was thinking more horizontally (like FF games), in which if you add more verticality to the designs the characters look kinda off (which is the kind of game OT is, after all). Should've phrased the posts better.

Lovely. It was unironically my GotY.
>don't care about the story or characters
But the characters were the great part. It was an almanac of really nice, simple stories about relatable characters that you could follow with very little random bullshit. I see people complaining that it's basically 8 separate campaigns instead of one but the parts are better than the whole if that makes sense.
Unlimited Saga did many things wrong but one thing it did right was sprites.

Therion here.
There is only one correct choice.

Literally make the narratives mesh well and so that the characters interactions aren't contrived as fuck, it would be one of my favorite games. There's literally no excuse for why this aspect was so shit in Octopath, fucking Chrono Trigger managed to juggle the narratives of a frog knight, a robot, and a prehistoric cave woman in the same party and it was great
Imo definitely not.
While the art direction and music is like SE's typical good quality game, but the gameplay is definitely not up to scratch.
Here's basically what you do the entire game.
>guess what weapon/magic element monster is weak (think persona 4/5)
>spam those elements until their defense breaks
>use your strongest attack while they're weakened
Also the fights aren't super hard, it's just having a party with the right elements that makes it a pain.
What were some issues or QoL you would have added to Octopath Traveler?
It’s factually not, but it’s still popular at least in Japan.

First run when the game released? Cyrus, then went for Olberic, Primrose and Haanit, obviously not effective, but it was fun and kinda paid off for Sorceror (Who i beat BEFORE beating any Story cause fuck Red-Eye.). Then i did the other storylines with the left-overs. I got a 100x Exp Boost on a Cait almost immedietekly after assembling the "team" so no grinding for the "second half", honestly a disappointment..
Second (current) Run? Ophelia, but i went and got all the "basic" Sub-jobs immediately at level 10 (Having fought all my encounters), havn't decided who to pick and will probably keep a extra save at the point i am now for future replays, seriously the shrines, with the exception of Cleric and Merchant that have additional second level zones to run through, are all fairly close to the entrances, you can easily get Scholar without a single encounter without Evasive Maneuvers and the rest without any with it.
I prefer Tressa over Therion personally since i don't think the shit in the chests are THAT good relative to where they are, and getting enough gold to buy just the powerful shit early (Like the SP one) is easier and less monotone then savescumming if you know how. Not that Therion isn't good, i just find him boring, and it is always good to remember characters aren't mutually exclusive, you could just roll with both (Frankly they are the only Path Actions that actually seem to compliment since stealing cheap shit with high % can fund Tressa buying the shit you would need to scum for.)
Why does prim have a stache?
So is it going to be like the first game where Yea Forums hypes it up to ridiculous levels because it's an exclusive then it turns out to be just an average JRPG? Seriously people were acting like it was gonna be the next fucking Chrono Trigger or something.

Everyone i know that bought this game never finished it
I hope this one isn't shit
Octopus traveler is the first game in a very long time that I just couldn't finish
I wish they'd just made another bravely default game
Unlikely since it is a sequel, i didn't touch the Demos and didn't expect too much and i definitely enjoyed the game even if it isn't the most complex affair. I'd say the worst part is the period between you getting the jobs and unlocking the final boss because you are too overpowered and it is more busywork.
I feel like Octopath delivered what i expected and got more of a kick from it then i did from CT even years back. Why? Cause im a Job system fag and twiddling with that is more satisfying to me then what CT had but that is my personal taste and i don't consider CT a bad game by any means, it is fun in its own right.
How far did they get? I know some people drop it at the final boss more due the frustration of redoing the easy ass but time consuming BOSS RUSH before it (Which is strange since the game is extremely lenient of checkpoints until then). I personally liked the final boss, it was a nice final test of party building.
I lasted about 35 hours before jumping ship. I got tired of hopping from chapter to chapter and being bored with the stories and scenarios that play out in them.
>I'm a job system fag
Octopath didn't exactly deliver in this department. FF5 has a better job system, and that game is 27 years older than Octopath.
Honest responses only. Did the game meet your expectations, and or exceed it?
>FF5 has a better job system, and that game is 27 years older than Octopath.
True, but FF5 is my favorite FF and SNES RPG so i didn't want to bring it in or i'd go retarded with my bias. from OT i was expecting a simplified BD with a improved Brave/Default system and that was what i got, the Job stuff was a fairly late addition from what i remember added due pressure, but it was a while back and i might be misremembering. anyway with that in consideration i found it adequate enough to fool around with.
Meet, but i didn't expect much, it is modern S-E after all.
First one wasn’t worth the time, no doubt it will be the same thing again.
All these low-mid tier budget studios SE started like RPG factory...they can’t make good games. I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear were very forgettable .
Also the the studio behind Bravely? Same thing.
First one was average, Bravely Second was awful.
Bravely and Octopath sold entirely thanks to their art style, nostalgia pandering and hype.
Octopath did great the first week and ran out of stock, but i suspect it had no legs and dropped from the charts almost instantly once people realized it was a JRPG simulator and not actual JRPG.
exceeded my expectations. I don't play JRPGs primarily for sub-bar predictable "save the world with the power of friendship" stories so that was a plus.
...I mean I guess it met my expectations? It was a good fun game, but it really wasn't what I call a classic or even memorable.
So you play them to press attack in a “””””strategic””””” way? Epic.
> improved Brave/Default system
not him but I disagree with that
I preferred the brave/default system because it worked in both directions, you could fuck yourself over by blowing your load and your enemies could take advantage of it because they had access to the system as well
the brave/break system is completely one-sided for the player, which means there's often no downside to misusing it (except for nonthreatening wasted time) and by extension less payoff for learning how to use it well like the brave/default system
For fuck sake, put interactions between the main characters.
If you care not only after Octopath Traveller BUT after Bravely Second then there's just no hope for you. You're retarded. End of story.
The way the characters were handled was a massive disappointment. Just "this is what I've got going on" and then it's just eight separate storylines from there with barely any interaction between the party.
I never finished the game so I'm not sure if it does eventually become one story instead of eight separate ones but that would make it significantly better for me.
But... but... it’s a Nintendo exclusive... i... HAVE... to like it.
Yaaay, another shit game with shit characters and the worst + cheapest graphics style in history!
Who even plays this game besides weebs??
The thing is that the absolute best thing about the game is the gameplay.
imagine if square used their aaa budgets to make many smaller games like this
I'll wait the android version.
Isn't Bravely Third also secretly in development right now too? Isn't this going to be a really good time for JRPG's?
>Isn't Bravely Third also secretly in development right now too?
Not necessarily Bravely Third. But Bravely something is. See .
But Bravely Third is most likely the best bet. They did not tease like that for the mobile games, and if it was a remake it'd be odd to make a mystery out of the title as well as maintaining a sort of continuity between the hints.
too bad the first one sucked dick according to calebhart42

They better take some tips from the SaGa team to handle intertwining storylines next time
Or just play Odin Sphere Leifthrasir

>a better way to intertwine the stories, having the other characters feature in it would be a big help already; more variation in class mix-n-matching; bigger fucking dungeons for the love of god
>none of these are fixed
>Octopath Second
Hell yeah, hopefully they can fix the flaws that the first one had and make the story more interconnected with better party interactions.
Is there a list of all the missable party specific quests?
Why is H'aanit dabbing on Prim?
Why has some midget eaten Cyrus and dressed up like him?
The moustaches are nice tho
Unlimited did nothing wrong outside of SKL and Naora's drawings and it also puts most 2D games to shame after nearly two decades.
There is a tavern convo in the game where Prim is trying to teach Cyrus and Haanit how to dance.
Fate or did you not complete Octopath Traveler?
It's mostly interactions between a character in the middle of their story with characters who weren't in the party when you played that chapter.
So it's a way to encourage multiple playthroughs then.
...did anyone ask for this shit?
I wanted bravely 3
Nah, it's just annoying. The game can be completed 100% in one playthrough without much else going on for it.
>hopes
They expand on the ability to play story chapters in mostly whatever order you please and better accommodate it with things like enemy and boss scaling beyond just the chapter 1s.

They give in to all the people begging for them to turn it into a linear game because "muh intertwined stories" and there's no feasible way to do both that and keep the free form progression the first game has (at least, not in an extremely cut corner way, seeing as how that would demand writing 57 different scripts for each chapter 1 alone)

A fun time
Nobody in their right mind replays a game just to see some minor, inconsequential skits between characters.
So is this a brand new game or a switch version of the game that was annouced a week or two ago?
But this completly failed to live up to the hype.
Noooooo stop I haven't even beat BD FF yet. Give me a chance to get the fucking game you sweaty japs.
If they are going to stick with the 8 person thing they should go all the way and give you 8 person battle parties.
That's fucking retarded
You're retarded
This isnt fucking fire emblem
I thought everyone hated Octopath Traveler. You and all the critics told me it was garbage!
Why even call it octopath than.
If all 8 characters had an interconnected story 4 person battle teams would have been fine but as is it needed some sort of gimmick.
Nobody said it was garbage, just aggressively bland.
Lost Sphere > Octopath
yfw the new Square Enix rep in Smash is an Octopath Traveler character
Each traveler is an alt and they all use a moveset that's a composite of all the job abilities.
The lack of interactions didn't bother me honestly. I saw everything as each characters individual plots, and the lack of interweaving was necessary to keep the game as open as it was. If moving the character interactions from optional scenes to non-optional means a more rigid progression then I'd rather just keep the interactions the same as they are now
What -does- need to change is the chapter variety. Every chapter in the first game plays out identically. Also the field actions need more diversity, or at the very least don't have characters share the same action while making one's version inherently worse than the others (fuck percentage based actions)
Also so much needed class balance. The entire game devolved into BP passing to your scholar while they one shot every encounter
>manofculture.jpg
That said if I ever played the game again, I'd probably go with Therion start. Having to run back for all the purple chests constantly was kind of annoying.
wake me up when it can play the Master Chief Collection, Bloodborne, RE2 remake, DMC5, MHW, and Vermintide 2-- or just any other good game that isn't Mario Odyssey.
t. idort with more Nintendo products than 95% of this board
Tressa (runelord), BUffbot
Ophilia (sorc) Damage dealer
Haanit (Warrior),
Alfyn (Thief) replenish BP/SP/heal
Cyrus (cleric), heal and easy breaks
Olberic (Warmaster) damage dealer
Therion (thief/merchant), Sharing SP, and abusing sidestep for himself
Primrose (dancer/apoth) healing and buffing
Only thing I can really think of is Therion might want to go hunter depending on if leg hold trip is going to be more useful than donate BP, and Sidestep.
I also may go back and get the three antidote stones because poison is annoying but I don't want to waste a skill or turn on stopping it
If they really did that, it would be great if they handled it like Lufia 3. That game did 9-person battles well.
But for OT2 I just want harder difficulty and a better designed open world. I loved that you can just visit all cities from the beginning
Pretty much. I don't think you can even rewatch previous party chat cutscenes either. Other that, an actual post game and a more refined story and it would be pretty good.
Forgotten a week after release
I mean it's a single player RPG. Not too much to talk about
It's either that or you end up like KH3 where it's only brought up so often due to people shitting on it
They should just dump the whole "everybody has their own story" bullshit and just make a standard JRPG with an overarching plot and actual character interaction. inb4 "BuT tHaT's WhAt MaKeS iT uNiQuE!!1"
Let’s hope they make a good game this time.

octotrash was terrible in all aspects. why is square wasting money on another one when they should be making a live a live remake/sequel instead?
based retard.
Nah, what makes it unique is that you can go wherever you want to go and explore from the getgo, team customization. The stories are half-assed, but it would work even better if there was less focus on it (more about intertwining than broad overarching stuff(, no more. Also fuck off with the capital letter shit.
Hopefully it is better than Octopath which was a disappointment. I will get it if the price ever drops(which wont happen so I will wait for more reviews on it)
Will it be on phones as well? I don't want to click stupid links to blogs
A Live A Live official translation would be greatly welcome, yes.
it's not unique, though. it's not even the first square jrpg to have that mechanic. live a live and saga frontier already did it better all the way back in the '90s.
persona still gets regular threads. so do smt, dq and ff.
>Nah, what makes it unique is that you can go wherever you want to go and explore from the getgo, team customization.
saga frontier already did that.
I'm ok with Octopath but they need to improve the story a lot. If you add a decent story with those aesthetics and that gameplay the game is a 9/10.
Should've used "distinct" instead of unique there, I've bitten a semantic bait. I concede. Also, comparing whole series to a new IP in terms of threads is a bit slanted.

wasn't?* I mean
With SE you can expect decent gameplay and a mediocre story with most of their games, some of them have shit gameplay and a shit story like FFXV.
Elaborate.
Yeah we get it you like saga frontier
Maybe they should just stop overhyping and do things properly instead of making a boring piece of shit like everything else, or at least be honest about what they're doing.
If the SaGa games and many others did it right since decades Octopath has no excuses for not delivering.
Open for business
She's lewd and pure at the same time.
one excuse they have is that Aquire are comparatively inexperienced at turn-based RPGs compared to SaGa helmed by fucking Kawazu, a veteran. At many points it feels like they tried, but simply didn't know how to do it right. Like when they didn't give fire elemental enemies fire immunity.
i do, but that's not why i'm bringing it up. my point is that octotrash wasn't the crazy original game that people hyped it up to be. it's actually just a mediocre rehash of ideas from previous square jrpgs, executed poorly.
it was overrated because it was a switch exclusive that came out during a massive game drought and because it pandered to nostalgia with its ugly rpg maker pixelshit graphics.
READY OR NOT, HERE I CUM
I did, this game was way batter than bravely shitfault
In some aspects, the game delivers a fucking lot, but in the main stream of the game it does jackshit. Like, the secondary missions do a much much better job at intertwining the game together and making it feel alive than anything in the main stories, and they don't necessarily slip into each other! Other thing that boggled my mind is how the credits show the exact party you fighted this or that boss throughout the game. It's total bullshit that they would do such good design on fucking credits but be unable/unwilling to do proper scripting onto the main game.
It's coming to iPhone anyway. Based Apple.
>my point is that octotrash wasn't the crazy original game that people hyped it up to be.
People played the demo (the two demos, in fact) and there were quite critical discussions on the game upon release. I have no idea what you're talking about here. Never once I've seen it touted as very original, just well executed in its openness.
>TWEWY 2 is probably happening anyhow.
Haha, yeah... any time now... ha... ha...
Well, they wouldn't drop such an obvious sequel hook in a rerelease of the game if they weren't... Right? :)
I'd say it's less about being inexperienced and more about being either overly ambitious or just plain dishonest, though admittedly this is more about Squenix' marketing than Aquire's own faults.
And even when it comes down to inexperience, certain stuff is just plain stupid, the whole weakness system being completely arbitrary for instance, or having random encounters in 2018, for such a game especially, it's beyond disappointing, and when even a minuscule team like Cattle Call makes it right for their games like Alliance Alive, it makes it all the more disappointing for both Squenix and Aquire, though on the other hand that team is made up of former SaGa team members so there's that.
And It's not like Kawazu doesn't make mistakes either way, he greenlighted a lot of stuff in his games that doesn't really work all that well in the bigger picture, TLR especially has a lot of shit that to this day I'm amazed he let slide, even though he only acted as producer, though considering it's a spin-off of sorts it might be kind of understandable.
Yeah man I get it octotrash Nintendo shitch rpgmaker haha cool, great contribution, go play saga frontier
Stop using SaGa for your shitposting.
Did you mean to say that PC won, user?
Because Yuzu will be capable of emulating both OT and its sequel perfectly by the time the sequel gets released.
Switch is for nintendo dick suckers only, there is absolutely no reason to buy a nintendo console with how weak they are since you'll be able to emulate everything a year or 2 after its release at better resolutions and framerates and even install graphic packs etc.
Oh maaaaan yay you're greatly welcome
I'm constantly on the road and being able to play anywhere is what appeals to me
