They can't really accomplish anything useful. Ulillillia used to do autistic speed building exercises in Bubsy 3D and would grind for literal years to get a single big number on an attack in Disgaea. The game he tried making was awful and never really progressed anywhere.

That's really neat and all, but I have to admit I'm a little disappointed that it's just farming that one box over and over. It's like how I'm always disappointed in speed runs that are usually just 'avoid actually playing the game as much as possible.'

According to the documentation in the playlist, the no joystick challenge is measured in "magnitude and frames." In other words, as few frames as possible where the joystick is pressed at all, and on those frames, using as little magnitude (i.e. closer to neutral) as possible. I don't think there would be anything close to the idea of a half-A press in this type of run, since having the joystick held when you go into a world makes no difference like holding A would.

I feel like he's doing the no joystick stuff because progress on the A button challenge is stalled. It's at the point where basically every approach to every remaining A press has been considered and nothing is workable, so all they can do is hope some crazy new glitch will be discovered by accident. It's possible they've finally squeezed out every last A press physically possible.

In a nutshell, this man created an entire algorithm for the purpose of traveling to parallel mapsets (aka parallel universes) and used his college degree as a science/math teacher (I forgot which one) JUST to avoid pressing the A button in-game. It's interesting because of alot of reasons, but most of all it's beating Mario without one of his most iconic moves (his jump).

It's like beating Zelda without using the sword.

Although personally the joystickless videos are a lot less entertaining than the A-less videos, since a lot more of the video relatively is spent just very slowly moving from one place to another or standing around waiting for stuff to line up. It's still really interesting seeing what absurd lengths he goes to to set everything up, but there's a lot less "action" on average.

Wait guys how does a TAS work? As far as I understand you input a button to each frame. How will he know what will actually happen in game if the mushroom guys move around at random?

you also have access to savestates and rewinds.

They aren't literally random, nothing in a computer is. It's all based on fancy mathematics originating in a single seed value. Given the same seed and identical circumstances, including potentially stuff like the system clock and number of frames since the game has been launched etc, the "rng" will do the same thing every time.
This lets you manipulate the supposedly random behaviors of enemies. Not with any real precision of course, you're still just basically hoping they do what you want, but you can at least force their pseudo-randomness to trend in the right direction by constantly rolling back time and making tiny adjustments to things like your position and timing that will change what the numbers the RNG spits out and only proceeding when you get something favorable.

Huh, I'm actually not sure. Normally his RNG manipulation is just small position changes back and forth, but he can't do that without the analog stick, so maybe.
I was going to say there wasnt much need for RNG manipulation when he was just looping the block coins since he said he gave up on getting the 3 coin spawn pattern, but he got at least two every time so actually yeah that was probably it.
I think the block was just getting respawned by distance anyway.
