>Alright some user last thread said that all Jrpgs have the same FD/DQ combat and im fucking pissed.
Literally the most low effort shitpost possible, why even care
>finished caligula effect overdose
How was it? Worth getting?
why can't more series actually address common fundamental fuckups of jarpgs like etriam
>a random encounter system that lets you know when a battle is coming
>status ailments aren't completely worthless
>in general, a rock solid battle system where weaknesses, ailments and buffs/debuffs are all useful with good party setups
>regular encounters aren't mindnumbingly easy
if a tiny team at atlus can do it why can't others

Play more games, Fatlusbabby.
i really enjoyed it. i recommend doing the musician route because you get the whole story and get to know the antagonists better as characters.
B-but look at this list of games that have absolutely fucking horrible stories, characters, music and graphics that no-one would want to play that go against your claim.

Good luck to you user. Too hardcore for me. I tried multiple times to get into it but making maps a consumable item is just too much. Maybe I'll mod unlimited uses of it in and try again someday.
>What are you currently playing?
Stranger of Sword City Revisited.
>What are you looking forward to?
Nothing in particular. Have a large backlog I gotta go through.
>Favorite JRPG?
I usually say Chrono Cross, but I played it when I was a kid and haven't played it since. I don't wanna have my childhood memories destroyed when I see any faults in the replay.
>I tried multiple times to get into it but making maps a consumable item is just too much
Later on in the early game you get Goblin Maps, which are basically maps with a slight chance to break instead of one use only magic maps.
Otherwise you can simply edit the game's files to make it so magic maps have unlimited uses, but that takes away part of the mapping/memorizing challenge for most dungeons, it might be a bit cheap for most, but it's still nicer than the old Wizardry games, and Elminage is pretty much that, the perfected form of classic Wizardry.

Just started Terranigma after beating Illusion of Gaia and I already have some gripes with how unintuitive some stuff is. The way to move forward makes no sense in some occasions and there is nothing quite as horrible as having to talk to all random NPCs to find the one with new dialogue. Production wise it seems like a clear step forward though, I just hope I don't get stuck again cause that shit instantly ruins games for me.

Easily Nocturne, runner ups come far behind.
Is that the vita version? Or does the NISA release have different text boxes than the Asian release?
I'm currently playing Horizon Zero Dawn, but am In the mood for a cozy JRPG. I've got 100$ on me. Should I nab Dragon Quest 11 off the PSN?
Just finished SMT Nocturne. I've downloaded the hardtype mod for a playthrough at a later time.
Started PopoloCrois. Transferred my save file from Vita to PC because I felt like the game really needed a fast-forward feature. Very charming game, however it does feel lacking in other aspects.
>What are you currently playing?
Wild Arms, it's fun but not great. I wish it leaned into the wild west theme a lot more than it does

the screenshot is from the vita version, but he says the exact same line in overdose.
at this point, you should probably wait for the switch version later this year, since it's going to have the real soundtrack and 2d mode.
I've no interest in the switch and the music doesn't bother me.

Get it, be warned that DQ is the end of all to the most classic and blandest JRPG formula possible, so don't bitch when you get that.
What do you mean?
in fairness, that line is extremely misleading out of context. that particular character's man-hating shtick is explained by a traumatic event from her past and also treated as a character flaw, not something to be proud of. her social link revolves around getting her to *stop* hating men.
Currently playing through Shining force 3. I've been meaning to do a playthrough since the translation patch came out. Only about halfway through scenario 1 now.
Are you calling DQXI boring or bland?
Playing Suikoden 1
It's better than I expected but I didn't really expect much.
heh, that's nothing. the game has some content pretty hard to swallow both for SJWs and turbo autists.
The moment i get bored of final fantasy 14 im picking up octopath traveler
Still on the fence because of the 60,- price tag and no sales these past few months on physical copies.
I fucking love jrpgs and would lovebthis one too prob
Worth the full 60?
no, wait for a sale or emulate FF6
I mean what I mean.
Generic anime fantasy, generic anime designs by Toriyama, generic chosen one saves the world story, generic turn based battle system, generic questlines, generic minigames etc.
Do not expect anything beyond this, DQ is loved precisely because it never strays from its formula, which most people do not like, its strength lies in being as by the book as possible, which is why I'm warning you.
If you want something that can surprise you with novelty and originality, do not buy DQXI, if you want a classic old school JRPG experience, buy DQXI, that's all there is to it.
Yeah, I am.
Being bland is the motto DQ admittedly lives by, it's not inherently bad either depending on who you ask, for me it is, for you it might not be.
And for the records, I like my own flavour of banality and blandness, but DQ just doesn't appeal to my tastes.
Not really. The graphics are nice but the tone and writing let the whole game down. A big chunk of the characters are actually irrelevant to the overall plot.
Playing through Ni no Kuni 2 and it is cute.
Looking forward to RF5 and FIre Emblem three houses.
P3P is my fav all time.
>What are you currently playing?
Beginning EO Nexus. Also have SMT IV Apocalypse going almost to the end of the Cosmic Egg, and I'm considering NG+ in The Alliance Alive.

The Alliance Alive HD. I fucking love TAA.
Going to order PQ2 soon.
Not much else as far as I know, maybe SMTV.

Difficult to say. As far as recent ones go TAA has been the clear winner for me, but the original Shining Force will always have a special place in my heart.

I don't really have any.
Not the kind of pitch I imagined. Who criticizes a game but then tells you to get it. Guess I have something to think about at least.
Ah, sad to hear it. Was expecting the opposite reaction.
Also waiting to play ff12 and maybe picking up the new EO since i havent sold my 3ds yet.
Any suggestions on switch jrpgs that are currently out? Persona 5 cant come to the switch or pc soon enough.
I hope they make some sort of successor to Octopath where your party actually interacts with each other and the storylines join at some point.
A sequel/successor was confirmed already. Eight party members but you can only pick from 3 to start with.

>want to play JRPGs
>having romance is an immediate attention-grabbing mechanic and compels me to check games out
I guess you could call it my niche, but I didn't think my love for romance would bleed well over to vidya and almost dominate my tastes.
just save your money and emulate live a live for free instead. that game was the octopath formula done right the first time.
>Who criticizes a game but then tells you to get it.
I know you're probably used to Yea Forums's usual attitude of people screaming how shit a game is instead of trying to have an actual discussion on a game's inherent qualities, but that's how I do things.
I might not like DQ, it surely has its objective flaws on a mechanical level (what game doesnt?), but it's also a series that has kept an undeniable level of quality in what it does and a certain degree of honesty towards its audience and itself.
While I myself can't help by feeling horribly bored by it, I can't deny the fact that it has a strong appeal to certain people who are looking for something it delivers extremely well (otherwise it wouldn't have lasted that much, especially in Squenix' rape dungeon), so there's nothing bad in being honest about it and telling people why they should or shouldn't get it.
user wanted something cozy, which DQXI unarguably is in its own way, so I gave him my two cents.
Oh, nice, a JRPG thread.
Friendly reminder that if you haven't played enough JRPGs to the point that you realize DQ is the pinnacle of the genre, you haven't played enough JRPGs to give your opinion on DQ.

DQ is baby's first jRPG, moreso than FF
Done. Thanks.
This intro is really good. The voice acting is great and I like the characters look and feel. Color me super invested.
I've actually never played a DQ game before, but I am interested. Any tips?
You'll probably be rushing a bit. It's not really a JRPG though. It's half platformer half city-builder.
realistically, pokemon is babby's first jrpg. dragon quest is babby's second jrpg.
I don't know if it's the same in 11, but in 8 you wanted to pump all your points into Boomerang so you could hit all enemies without using magic points.
pokemon doesn't fit the classic jRPG mold
FFVII because I really wanted an old game with dated graphics for that comfy feel. I just got Yuffie.
Does every girl have a separate date scene when you go to the Gold Saucer?
It isn't? I really should stop grabbing games with no clear idea of what they are.
Just go in blind
The old games are just going to give a general idea of how the gameplay works but XI is in a kinda different place with the fully 3D world
Also, if you are going to play it on pc remember to download the Orchestra Overhaul mod
Yes but if you wanted Yuffie's you done fucked up because you basically have to fail her recruitment scene on purpose several times to see it.
It's totally great game, though. Give it a try. You play as God taking back the mortal world from demons. You have to travel down in avatar form to kill the demon boss, then you settle a town in the cleared area, managing their growth and defending them from demon raids in exchange for prayer which gives you new abilities in the platformer sections.
Well fuck and I just grinded for an hour just to get her
Sophie is ok. Personally will recommend people to start with Mana Khemia since it is my favourite. Need a PS2 emulator though.
OT: Ayesha and Escha and Logy. The former crashed too many times on emulator so I put in on hold. Nevertheless, very good game, great music despite the cutesy stuff. Just started Escha and Logy and its pretty great. A lot of fun stuff (toys) you can play around with alchemy this time around. And the combat is similar to Mana Khemia which I fancy a lot. Too bad the sound effects lack the oomph and overall feels lethargic.
I played the Arland trilogy and while I like all the games I think I still like Rorona the most. One thing about the other Arland games is that the games are quite similar to Rorona so once you've discovered the "winning formula" for one the rest of the games become trivially easy.
It's definitely a series worth trying out. Enjoy.
reminds me of Mario RPG.
Thanks. Every character looks and sounds great. I'm getting comfy!

>What are you looking forward to
FFXII looks interesting. Maybe Persona Q2 as well, though I wasn't really able to get into Q.
>Favorite JRPG?
Chrono Trigger, Mother 1, EO5. Hard to settle on a definite answer.
Get ready to lose 90 hrs
Have fun
No problem.
Be ready for grinding, naturally. Be aware of how Tension works. Each time you build tension, your next regular attack is boosted. This is cumulative, so building tension 3 times and attacking will do more damage than four attacks. But you can't get Knocked out, status-affected, or take any other actions or the tension is lost. Mainly useful for bosses.
It all depends on dialogue choices and who you've used in your party. You can only date 1. Don't worry about it too much but you have to actively try to not go on the date with Aeris. None of it has any bearing on the story but Aeris is probably canon, the rest being jokes, including a tricky date to get with Barret
I've been playing Ys 8. It was great until the shit with Nameless started and then all that was just terrible. Hopefully it picks up again. Gameplay wise I thought Celceta was a downgrade to Seven, but 8 is a huge improvement to Celceta, with my only complaint being that flash guard / dodge seem rather unreliable about activating.
The port runs a lot better than I expected, I get constant 60fps with max settings and ultra resolution scaling, and no crashes yet. But the translation is as bad as I expected. Apparently all this "Mister Christin" shit was actually added in the retranslation too and in the original translation they were properly leaving it as "Adol Christin".
that nameless shit was so stupid and unnecessary unless it's a reference to an older YS game, I only played VIII. The story isn't very interesting, just enjoy the gameplay

>it never strays from its formula,
It does exactly that, though. No random encounters, dropping the classic round based battle system. Frankly, it plays very little like the old ones. So much has changed, it may have taken a lot longer to do so than certain other franchises but it's not 'literally the same battle system for 30 years' like idiots claim.
90 hours? God damn. I'm nervous now. I was planning on just cozying up and just enjoying the story. Is it really that lenghty?Ok. I'll try and bear that in mind. I'm used to JRPGs in general. I don't think DQ'll be that much different, but we shall see!
>that nameless shit was so stupid and unnecessary unless it's a reference to an older YS game, I only played VIII.
Nope, I've played at least one iteration of every entry in the series. That might be the dumbest story bit of any of them.

DQ11 is pretty special in that regard. I sank 120 into it myself. Felt like a 40 hour game. The pacing is immaculate
>EOU2
I just want to say that Bertrand is one of the most underrated and interesting character concepts I've ever seen in a video game, and I'm said that the game never does too much with his character after his moment and also that no one ever discusses him compared to Ricky/Arianna.
It's really up and down. After that you it kinda gets more interesting since you really wanna find out whats going on with Dana and shit but once you discover what the antagonist forces end up being, they're even more fucking retarded than that Don't know if you've been spoiled about anything or not but the payoff, not worth it at all
Fucking awesome. I'm in for a treat then. It's almost 12am for me, but fuck it. I'm NEET for the moment.
Lily Knight Saga.

Itching for some romance, just finished AT 2 and boy that was just amazing. Any other JRPG like it?
How the fuck does that detract from the fact that DQ is so good it is usually the first Jrpg people get into and it has such a solid but simple design/gameplay?

Hey lads have any of you played xanadu next? Is it worth? It's like a slow arpg, right? Or is it more turn based?
Tokoyo xanadu looks like garbage, but the old ones look way more interesting to me.
Playing FFV. I've just reached The second tablet in the Merged World. Wendigo was a fucking headache to fight, and I think I'm gonna have to grind to oblivion from here on out. I'm willing to see it to the end, though.
Looking forward to the fact that we're finally getting some fucking info regarding SMTV
Favorite RPG is SMT II
also Pokemon Platinum if that counts
Might as well post my FFXIV character here since I don't know what else to really put here.
What's the deal with Juggernaut in Etrian 2 Untold? What I'm seeing is that apparently I shouldn't be buffing or debuffing at all because that powers up his best attack, which more often than not is a full party wipe when powered up.
You can have buffs up, but if you ever have too many he'll do violent cry which dispels them all. If he ever does Violent cry that means rush is coming the next turn, most of the time he does it after using berserker cry so always dispel that if you see it
Man i been hearing a lot of great thing for Etrian Odyssey but there's quite a lot of the games in the series, Which one should i try first?
Scarlet grace pc or apk?
Doesn't Violent cry remove his debuffs as well?
I'm also seeing that he supposedly has a pattern, so even if I just kept the attack buff from berserker cry, he'll still remove that and rush anyway.
>no Fafnir Knight in Nexus
>Untold 3 never
In all honesty the story in U2 kind of drops off after the 3rd stratum and never really picks back up. The final 1v1 boss with the orchestrated music of the power up theme is a pretty great moment though.
There are free demos for all the games, check out the demos for 4 or 5. You can transfer your save to the full game.
>that image
I am filled with a now incandescent ragesadness that we will never get to see the Fenrir turned into a mechanical abomination and watch Arianna cry him back to normalcy. Next Stage better sell like hotcakes

Damn, I love this series so much. They're the only 3DS games I've bought in the past 4 years
You should go play III if you haven't. I also recommend The Dark Spire or 7th Dragon III, if you're looking for something a bit different.
I've played them all except the og 1 and 2. I tried out 7th Dragon, but it wasn't really for me. I'll look into Dark Spire though, thanks for the rec
I remember playing III but dropped it as soon as I got to the boat min game.
Just a heads up, you may want to try the vanilla version of 2 sometime. Its pretty primitive with regards to quality of life stuff but its different enough from Untold 2. It also has the Trauma Center nurse in it.
That's a shame user, its something you can ignore if you really don't like it.
>That's a shame user
I could try to get back on the game but Im not too sure if I've been spoiled too much by the newer games.
I'd say its worth a shot, the actual gameplay of III is quite solid and the stratum design is on point. Plus its neat just from the other games in the series in that you have multiple endings possible, with bosses differing depending on your route. Pretty interesting stuff.
Thanks for the headsup.
I dropped Untold 2 a while back, but I really want to go back and finish since it seems like I'm near the endgame.
Replaying Bravely Default on hard. It's not nearly as difficult as my first playthrough although Lester just slapped my shit.
Agnes > Edea
I'll try it and just get a walkthrough for the boat section.
Hoping to see some gameplay of project re fantasy this century.
Have fun, don't be afraid to ask /eog/ for help. 3rd stratum walled my party and made me stop for a long while until I redid things, then the game was a breeze.
I disagree but respect your opinion
I just finished refrain last night.
i'm mostly looking for something that can give me the same feeling or is akin to a good experience like Utawarerumono.
Shame that the game lacked tracks, got quite repetitive hearing those bells every single battle.
Has it been translated?
>Literally fucking how do you win?
Just get a single character and make them dodge-based, usually a dancer with the charmer pact and they'll steamroll through the game for you.
After Juggernaut uses Eradicate, he'll use Violent Cry if you have any buffs on, then combo it into King's Rush. Keep the attack buff as long as you can, but use White Noise/a Unihorn before he gets angry.
I’m interested in checking out Ys. Which should I play first?
xanadu next's a great game, has kino dungeon crawling (had dungeons that loop back to hub before souls but better), good music and atmosphere, not in much of actual story that goes on but a lot of lore and subtext. i hope you'll try it out at least, i don't even see it discussed on places like Yea Forums especially now that tokyo xanadu ruined the namesake.
What systems do you have? Its really hard to go wrong with any of them - personally I like to suggest Oath or Ys 7 first, depending on if you want a more single character focus or a party focus.
PS4. I was thinking of trying out 7 for PC since it’s cheaper. And if I like it, I’ll get 8.
the hilarious thing about wendigo is that the fucking Geomancer of all people trivializes it.
The monsters in the very final area give absurd amounts of JP if you feel like catching up, and there's also the pots in Phoenix Tower that also give like 100 jp per encounter.
thx
Lads I've never played any of the 3DS EOs, which one would you recommend to someone whose only experience with the series was beating the first game?
Sounds like a smart plan, user. There will be some references to older events but there's nothing you need to know that won't be explained, its mostly just fanservice stuff.
Probably 4, its very easy to get into, has shorter dungeons and a lower difficulty curve. Try the demo out on the e-shop since you can transfer your save to the full game.
I personally prefer V and Untold 2 but they're harder games and I think they can exhaust newer players with their pacing.
If you've already played the first one you might as well do EO2 Untold, either story mode or classic is fine since you can do all content on either one.
>What's the deal with Juggernaut in Etrian 2 Untold?
Just tank his shit with dauntless order and force breaks, worked for me.
I am making my own rpg in rpg maker
You guys got any tips for making a 10/10 game like dragon warrior 3?
I just finished fleshing out my starter town
>Dragon Warrior 3
My nigga. Just try to utilize the personality system that they reintroduced in the GB version and you can pretty much create a good set of characters and stats.
But her near death attack has an incredibly high chance of wiping half my party every 1-2 turns, seemingly regardless of other factors I always lose half my team, which basically makes recovery impossible and the battle lost.
I don't know man, I am just not doing well. The 10-30 turns before she's even at a state where you can fight her is really getting to my nerves too.
>7th Dragon III
Just beat this. The Preloma section was a lot of fun.
That's a good ideal
Might have to just fake the personality stat growth by just giving them like a flat +2 hp for diligence after a series of questions
Playing this gem rn. Love the Brownie Brown games.
Use less characters user, use the covens that buff one character a LOT.
Most of her attacks are based on the number of characters you have, so if you have 30 it'll hit 30 times, probably killing your tanks because it will hit them like 10 times.
I beat her on my second try just because I had the reaper with the alice coven be my dodge tank.
Also, I don't remember if it's the sheer star pact or the charmer pact, but one of them will lower resistances blunt/pierce resistances, allowing you to deal damage on the first 10 turns. I usually get a gore hit on them.
I bought Caligula Effect and regret it immensely. The graphics are dog shit in handheld, the characters are boring, and the story just can't stop to write a good scene if it tried.
Is Utawarerumono good? Seems like it's just a boring srpg
I’m currently finishing my file of star ocean 3. I started it in 2005. I just finally beat Sphere 211. I forgot how some of these battle trophies are so hard and/or tedious to get
Yeah, and if you want to do something different with that idea, you can probably make a twist to the personality system? Like, in DQIII, they have books or items that could change the personalities, but what if you just have that from the start in a later event? Let's say that you a heroic and just character, but in certain choices you make, they just end up in a "bad" route and their stats/personality change to someone ruthless? I've had an idea like for awhile, I just never used RPG Maker.

Playing the first PxZ on hard. Boy, coming back from the second game and playing this one again, made me appreciate even more all the Qol changes on the sequel.
Got this in the post today; thought people here might find it a bit interesting. It's a guidebook (albeit it has a lot of art) released in 1999 for "Ore no Shikabane o Koete Yuke", which as we know, received a sequel in Oreshika that actually got an international release.
Just started SMT III: Nocturne. First SMT game and I'm hoping I enjoy it enough to get into the rest of the series.
Finished the first assignment. If the request doesn't specifically ask for quality level, what does Quality matter? Does it affect equipment?
Nice. I loooove collecting guide books even though i never use them to help play the game. I was thinkng about ordering some popolocrois guides from Japan.
>What are you currently playing?
Just finished EOV with a messy team of Barrage Pug, 4kat, Cannon Dragoon, Herald Shaman and Hound Rover. I want to replay it in future with a chain team, something like fencer/harbinger/pug/necro/shaman but actually make it all the way to the superboss as well.
>What are you looking forward to?
Well I want to replay EOU but because half the content and one of the best boss fights is locked behind story mode I want to try the story party but with heavy reclassing. Something like Highlander -> Ronin, Ricky -> Dark Hunter, Arthur -> Hexer, Simon -> Troubadour and best girl stays protector. Looks iffy due to gimped stats and I might be fucked on Expert, but we'll see how it goes, it might be fun. I wish you could reclass straight away.
>Favorite JRPG?
Probably Devil Survivor 1, if that doesn't count then Radiant Historia. I've still got a lot to catch up on though, I can't stop replaying the games I enjoy instead
Would a Mage filled coven for damage + Hammer Bros (Female) coven for Gore chance + Tank coven for obvious reasons + 1 Dodging dancer work then, you think?
My problem isn't that my tanks are dying, mostly anyway. The problem is that the AOE "Fall" attack seems to ignore Peer Fortress guards and just hit literally everyone regardless, which results in me being unable to deal enough damage to down her before she whips it out again for disastrous results.
I STRONGLY suggest you try Digital Devil Saga duology. It has a terrible encounter rate, but the story is really good, the combat system is like Nocturne's, great OST and better skill learning system (no magatama).
Other SMT games I recommend are: Soul Hackers (3DS), SMT IV, SMT IV Apocalypse, Strange Journey (all 3 are on 3DS), and... maybe Persona series.
>The problem is that the AOE "Fall" attack seems to ignore Peer Fortress guards and just hit literally everyone regardless, which results in me being unable to deal enough damage to down her before she whips it out again for disastrous results.
I had a lot of dancers and my reaper with high Agi, they always dodged that attack and then procceded to revive everyone else. Anyone who didn't die got to Attack.
Furfur always does a little charge before she uses it again.
I just repeat and she loses, though my damage at that point was high enough that she only got to use it twice. I mostly suffered with it on the first try.
I wouldn't know about having a tank coven though, I never used the Peer Fortress for anything except the last boss and parasyte covens.
If I remember well, I had Sheer star pact(dancer/main healer), Alice coven(Reaper with increased agro), Domina pact for Hammers, White Rose for my two Aster Knights and Rogue and a Charmer pact with two mages + another dancer.
The fight wasn't that hard, I had a bigger problem with Overlord's flame than the instakill spell she uses near death though.
Same actually.
I currently just beat the vestment cave dragon and it's about the same difficulty as I remember it so far (I played normal before). Probably because I kind of know what to expect already.
Also this game is a lot more...serious than I remember. I remember bravely second was really goofy as fuck and was full of dumb japanese ""humor"" type things. So going back to shit like the innkeeper dealing with his son's death was jarring.
Mobile games and potato doujinshi
I tried reviving too, obviously, but for me her attacks in between were enough to continuously kill the revived members and finish off the rest.
It's always a slow mentally draining battle until she gets close to flashing red, then it's a gradual guaranteed death. Then it just repeats again and again.
I know that it's not impossible, but this is easily by far the hardest fight I've encountered.
I will try out your advice, user. I really do appreciate your help, sincerely I do.
Any cool ones you wanna share?
Lyon is really fucking cute.
Why does it look like domestic abuse?
Cold Steel 3 when REEEEE I want to cuddle with Altina
It was fantastic. I genuinely enjoyed the story mode in EO2U. I was fucking invested in it, and that ending battle felt incredible.

>that party comp
I seriously hope it's not your screenshot.
>Literally fucking how do you win?
Don't attempt the fight until the endgame. It's the most difficult fight until post-game, leave it for later.
As to how you win it - well, it's complicated. The fight is essentially a DPS race. BUT the boss starts with ridiculous resistances to all form of damage. She will debuff herself over the course of the fight, lowering her resistances multiple times. So she gets squishier and squishier. But the longer the fight goes on, the more aggressive she becomes with her own attacks.
So basically, you want your melee covens to keep auto-attacking her the hole time, hoping for lucky critical gore hits. While save the donum nukes for the time when she's relatively squishy to maximize your damage in the final phases of the fight.
Honestly, your success there is heavily dependent on luck and critical gore. You can't increase your luck in real life, but thankfully luck is a stat in this game, so it lets you offset your own unluckiness a bit.
>wanna trying replaying FFVI again because I've never beat it
>remember getting stuck on the train boss and completely unable to beat it
>instantly lose will to play it
fug :DDD
World of Final Fantasy
If you've played the fantranslations of the other ones (but mostly of the first one), then it's a lot more impactful, since that's where a lot of the plot threads that get resolved in 3 started. Preloma in particular since that's an important plot town as well as the old HQ because that was your old team's base, and they're long gone.
>seems to ignore Peer Fortress guards
Asking this just in case, you do know how the Fortresses' interception mechanic works in this game, right?
I'm not a rich guy and I wanna play a JRPG on my ps4.
Should I get Caligula or Death end re:Quest?
>Should I get Caligula or Death end re:Quest?
No.
What's wrong? Are they that bad?
What else would you recommend? I only have Digimon Cyber Sleuth as JRPG on my ps4.
>CBV
You have good taste.
Did anyone play God Wars?
Not him, but if you are prepared to pay close to full price for a JRPG, go for DQ11, the new Valkyria Chronicles, or even Lost Sphear.
>I seriously hope it's not your screenshot.
Not mine, but my party is just standard RPG classes, so it's not too amazing.
>Don't attempt the fight until the endgame. It's the most difficult fight until post-game, leave it for later.
I've already beaten Baba Velkuvrana and am just trying to unlock the True Ending.
I have just been waiting for her 5-6(?) Impairment Magia and then whittling down her health until the second phase and trying to kill her before she kills me.
They have a chance of taking the damage for other units independent of other guards they might have. As in the attack hits them instead and then it applies all the other parts, right?
At least I have never seen it come up as "Miss" on other Covens and then hit the Peer Fortress Coven for the damage.
Not that I claim to understand very well, I have just felt my way to the end of the game.
Was enjoying EOIV as my first EO game. Breezing with the game with no problems at all, then I got to the third labyrinth. Completely ridiculous fire boss there, heals 480 health per turn, hits entire party multiple times per turn. Yep fuck that, now I'm playing Fire Emblem Awakening before moving onto my Switch JRPG's I've been picking up.
> I'm not a rich guy
Get a kemco game.
literally just disable his scale pile and then attack him from behind, it's not hard, you even get a bushi helper for the fight
also if you bring some spare ice stakes you can use them to bust the scales he launches in battle too
Hot!
But why are you using 10 estus flasks with your character? She's not pure pyro?
>They have a chance of taking the damage for other units independent of other guards they might have. As in the attack hits them instead and then it applies all the other parts, right?
Basically, but... it ONLY works when their coven is Fortifying, or the Fortress is Defending individually.
Its proc chance is also based on the number of Katars equipped. Base 10% + 15% for each Katar equipped, i.e. 40% while dual-wielding Katars. Shields are USELESS for Fortresses.
Also AoE attacks don't hit all of your party at once, instead they're rolling through your characters from left to right, hitting each once. And Fortresses will attempt to take a hit instead of them. But they will also attempt to take a hit for other Fortresses as well. And the number of procs is hard capped, at, (I think it was) 3 Intercepts per Fortress, so you don't want them wasting it on each other.
So, basically, you want to put three Fortresses in a single Covenant and shove them as far to the right as your Formation allows it. And just Fortify the coven every single turn.
Yeah, I already assumed or put together all that. Except the maximum amount of interceptions, anyway. Thank you very much for trying to ensure that simply being retarded wasn't the reason I keep losing though.
Sounds like I am being sarcastic here, but I promise you that I am not.
They just don't seem to have enough in them to defend against Furfur's biggest attack, is all. Which I guess makes sense with 15 units, but is all the more reason for my cry for help.
I think the game never mentions that Interception only works while they're defending. This stuff was all over the LoR threads, when it just came out. A lot of people were oblivious to that. I myself played like through half of the game without realizing that.
>They just don't seem to have enough in them to defend against Furfur's biggest attack
Well, my pretty-well optimized Fortresses took like 2 damage from the secret post-game superboss (not the "regular" post-game superboss), which is the toughest fight in the game, while the same attack oneshot all other party members. I honestly don't remember, but Furfur very well might have an instakill attack, which you can't really guard against.
Again, this fight is kinda annoying, because you really have to get lucky with critical gore hits, plus if you wipe, it only really happens late into the fight, so every attempt takes a while.
Playing EO2U
I put it off for a while but decided that I won't continue with Nexus and V until I beat it
Yeah, it's a huge pain to fight. I've got a bunch of stuff to try thanks to you kind anons though, so I will keep at it.
I don't want that depressing staircase and an overwhelming defeat to be the last thing I get from this game.
Again, I very much appreciate it.
The suffering continues in the post-game.
I beat MOTHER 3 a couple of days ago, I had a damn good time with it. Cried like a bitch too, it truly got me.
Thinking about starting The Last Remnant, it's been sitting on my library for years. Is it any good? I have heard it's kind of difficult.
A slutty duchess did not wish to be woken early.

Chocobo's Dungeon looks nice. I'm interested in seeing how it's going to differ from the original. I have a large enough backlog to go through before I get any new releases, and as I autistically play games in release order I'm not too hype for anything.

Etrian Odyssey I guess. I like Dragon Quest a lot, but I tend to get bored after a while. MonHun is more of a action RPG, but I've played that series so much, probably the series Ive put the most time into.
Thinking of getting Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon. The Japanese physical version includes English text as well, right?
I'd like something short, like a 10-20 hour JRPG. All the recent ones I've played have been over 50 hours and I'm bit burned out.
DQ just looks too average in comparison to other games in the genre like EO
Bertrand and Chloe were the best characters
Currently playing picrelated.
DQ3 to 5 are fantastic, but far from the best. Everything after is middling and basic.
Looking forward to SMT5 and PS2 SMT's remakes (someday).
Was playing Trillion and was surprised that the story and characters are actually engaging and interesting in a game from Nep studio.
This game looks cute
It looks cute, but the story is not so cute.
Child of Light
South Park PC games
LISA
Octopath Traveler without the side content
SaGa Frontier, each of the 7 routes are about 5 to 10 hours by themselves.
nep characters are super interesting
Is Neptunia actually fun? I always assumed it was one of those games ironic weebs play to make fun of on streams.
It's video game equivalent of Cute Girls Doing Cute Things.
It's just simple, dumb fun without any depth. It's fun if you just want to turn your brain off and just enjoy silly things.

This user just reminded me. I also LOVED The Alliance Alive. Found it much more enjoyable than Legend of Legacy.
There won't ever be another Suikoden. This always makes me so sad whenever I think about it. I must have played 2 at least ten times.
>Are there any JRPGs with Diablo like stuff?
Diablolikes aren't so common in Japan, but try out Cladun games or Damascus Gears, there's a few old ones too if you're into retro.
Cladun is, surprisingly, one of the most competent NIS games when it comes to actual gameplay and the fact that you can draw your own sprites for whatever you want is also really, really cool, Cladun 2 or Sengoku are what you want, you can safely ignore the rest as it's not as good, outside of maybe the PS3 game.
Damascus Gears has mechs, which is in itself a novelty, but the dungeon aesthetic is only good in 1, which in turn has pretty flawed and slow combat, Saikyou Exodus has much better and much faster gameplay but awful dungeon aesthetic and design, so you gotta pick your poison with that
>(and Second)

>Should I get Caligula or Death end re:Quest?
having just finished both recently: get them both if you can.
>I only have Digimon Cyber Sleuth as JRPG on my ps4.
you should get cyber sleuth's midquel, hacker's memory, at some point.
>or even Lost Sphear.
Why would anyone buy Lost Sphear, let alone for full price? I couldn't even finish the demo, the game is everything wrong with 90's RPGs.
caligula overdose took me about 25 hours to finish. i did the musician route with all the extra character episodes and dungeon-crawling missions that add playtime, but i didn't bother doing any of the npc students' side quests.
i've always avoided neptunia like the plague because it's too "moe anime" for me. but since i enjoyed death end re;quest, i might give neptunia a chance someday.
>Playing

KH3 DLC, but I also have Nier:Automata I wanna play, bought it at christmas and I know nothing about it.
>Favorite JRPG?
I dunno, probably Chrono Trigger because of nostalgia
I guess I'll try it even though it normally isn't my thing.
Yeah when it comes to "moe anime" stuff it really depends if you like the characters. Some moe stuff I enjoy because the characters are endearing, and others I hate because I find them annoying (which I think might be the case with Neptunia for me, but I'll have to try it first). Moe can be very polarizing.
Are there any 'moe' jrpgs with actual engaging strategic gameplay? I like the aesthetic but it's never paired with a fun game in my experience.
Nocturne was the last jrpg i finished 2 summers ago. I missed fucking up the AI and gathering demons and how fast pace it was
>Is Utawarerumono good? Seems like it's just a boring srpg
its great, but its mainly a visual novel
I guess, but it would help unfucking this overcrowded board. /vg/ faces similar problems where people make constant "bump" posts just to persevere against the endless mobashit generals.
There was this one title, Remilore, that came out a short while ago. It's basically a very melee-focused ARPG where ranged enemy attacks and your own are basically a shoot-em-up game in terms of how much projectiles they jizz out.
it's crazy to think about all the acclaimed series people used to take for granted that are probably never coming back. suikoden, ogre battle, breath of fire (mobile gacha shit doesn't count), arc the lad (ditto), chrono, etc. these are some of the best-selling jrpg series ever made, too.
you'd probably like yo-kai watch blasters.
alliance alive kinda
You could try out some of the games made by the same devs/writers. It's not the same but it's the closest there will be.
Oh man, that reminds me I need to play through Mask of Deception but I haven't played the first game/watched the first anime so I've been stopping myself from doing so. I'm like ~5-6 episodes into the anime but I can never find the time...
>playing
Tales of Innocence on DS.
I remember playing through this back in 2011 and not liking it much, skipping all optional content. Don’t know why I’m playing it again, I’ve forgotten everything so it’s like a new game to me.
I might be wrong, but you might be able to just throw a Phoenix down at it.
I think you're right, but I don't think you'd kill it with a phoenix down. You might need mega potions for 9999 damage and a few of them.
What's wrong with Bravely Second? I did like Default, but Second fixed some of the issues I had with the first game.
Both have their ups and downs though.
I've been a wage/school slave for a few years now, first summer I have completely free. What JRPGs should I spend my summer playing? I have a Modded PS2, cfw PS3, SNES with flash cart, DS with flashcart.
That leaves me with a lot of jrpgs, I don't like emulation so only suggest games on those consoles. Prefer something mostly story driven but I like games like Tales/Kingdom Hearts with fun action combat too.
Currently playing Lost Sphear. Can someone tell me if Locke ever stops acting like a low functioning retard? he's single handedly ruined the experience for me and I need to know if I should drop this game.
Wouldn't recommend it to him when HD version is right around the corner
Etrian Odyssey 3 for DS, can't think of anything besides Persona and Atelier series for Playstation
It's still worth a recommendation simply because the 3DS one has some QoL stuff that's not possible on any other platforms, as well as being short enough that it's not a huge use of time overall.
Snes has plenty of obvious choices like chrono trigger and ff6. Since you have a flash cart you can play some translations like seiken densetsu 3 or terranigma with a ntsc mod if you're a burger.
The DS has a handful of good dragon quest games too, you should try DQV as the DS version is the best one.
So I feel like I have played pretty much everything that most people know about and now I'm stuck in a void. It seems like there is nothing else to play for me. Instead I am replaying some of my favorites like Seiken Densetsu 3 and the Etrian Odyssey series. I've been doing that for pretty much a whole year. Are there any obscure gems that are worth a play? And I am seeking something that's good and not just something that I don't know for the sake of having it played.

Already finished Nexus and did everything including the post game unfortunately. Hero was a cool concept but including like 90% melee frontliners while the flagship class wants to leave the front slot open was a pretty fucking dumb idea. Really missed the hexer. But the game was pretty great.
Nope. Congratulations on finishing every JRPG.
Playing through Caligula Effect Overdose right now.
The combat feels like a more intuitive and faster version of Resonance of Fate and I like that despite the high school setting it gets right to business instead of four-five hours of doing mundane shit and setting up the plot . But goddamn the repetitive music is driving me insane.
FeMC is cute too. She's plain, there's nothing really out there or over-the-top about her design but there's a stoic charm to it.

I love them both but I think I like grandia slightly more. They both gave me a decent amount of last act fatigue but the grandia ending was more satisfying and the world was much more fun.
Play them both, of course.
Name one game, there is a reason shopkeepers buy stuff from you at 50% off
Trails in the Sky. You make a net gain of 4000 miras for every x99 Apple Ice Cream you craft/sell. It literally breaks the game money-wise.
How should one start this series? If I understood correctly then the 2 games on the vita are both sequels to a game that didn't get translated or something? Been looking to play this but I don't know where to start exactly.
ff8 has a crafting glitch, star ocean 3 (which kind of involves a bit of rng and savescuming, yet it can completely break the game since you can craft yourself ring of might synergize one in weapon and buff it with crystals, so you get 9999 attack at cd1)
>Seiken Densetsu 3
Based. Had the most fun in my life while playing this game with a friend of mine during summer 2001.
Which one? I don't remember money ever being an issue in the first 2 games.
The first game. It's not really an issue but it does make your life easier, especially since most of the money only comes in from quests which are limited in number and are locked by progressing the plot. You can sell sepths of course, but you really should not do that since they are too valuable for what they are worth in mira.
>not playing both to see what the changes are
it's like you don't even like it haha
But seriously, I think that it's still worth recommending for the 3DS. I prefer the 3DS as a handheld and TAA works well on it since that's what it was originally made for. I'll still be getting the HD one but the 3DS one's nothing to sniff at
>But goddamn the repetitive music is driving me insane.
it didn't bother me at all since the soundtrack is so good. having the vocals fade in during battles and then fade out once they're over helps break up the repetition a bit, as well as the fact that boss battles have remixes of the songs instead.
Honest question; What do you guys enjoy in JRPGs? The characters? The crazy settings? the weeb things? tactical gameplay?
Please, show me a game where buffs, debuffs and ailments are as important as in fatlus games. Elminage was a fucking cakewalk after playing EO or Wizardry.
Mostly the setting and gameplay, probably why Etrian Odyssey is the JRPG series I enjoy the most
The music is good and I do like the seamless transitions from exploration to battle tracks, but still, I only have so high a threshold of tolerance
I enjoy whatever happens to be good about them, just like any other game.
Someone recommend me something to play on PC. Emulators are OK. I've played through every DQ, FF, SMT (barring just a few), Fire Emblem, and most other mainline series. I tried playing some random EO once and just didn't get into it. I feel like I'm pretty out of the loop on JRPGs these days, even though I'd consider myself pretty versed in the genre
Dead, as the series.
>Spoonfeeding
lol
>Elminage was a fucking cakewalk after playing EO or Wizardry.
LMAO, the floormasters in Gothic alone are harder than any of the FOE in EO games.
>Spoonfeeding
I.E. I have no argument.
I honestly play videogames for the story. I couldn't care less about the combat system, graphics, or whatnot. The music is a good second contender though, but story above everything else.
Depends on the type of JRPG, but for ones like EO, it's a combination of the setting and the very slow-paced gameplay.
It relaxes me and it makes it feel sweeter when I defeat a difficult to kill enemy, like pic related (and unlike Pokemon, you can't just level grind past something like this)..
I did say please. Can’t you name a single game? Gothic is pretty easy, m8.
FFXIII trilogy
what now, faggot
all of those, as well as the stories, music and art styles.
You must not like many JRPGs then
What are your favorite and least favorite
Caligula Effect just got released on steam, people claim its an early Persona like game, if I were you I would wait till its on sale because I think the price is too high
I want to fuck feMC's thighs. This artist really neefs to do more work, he's great
>I did say please.
Honestly, If you even have to ask for the usual fatlus pseudoarguments about muh buffs you don't even deserve to be taken seriously, especially when you people pretend that buffs or status effects aren't useful in the vast majority of games outside of trash like FF, let alone the fact that buffing in atlus games is just as brainless as mashing attack either way since there's no actual strategical variation or depth to battles outside of that.
Besides, you've got plenty of recs from this thread alone, if you actually want some games to play instead of bitching about nothing, even something as simplistic as your average Metal Max has focus on both buffs or statuses.
>Gothic is pretty easy, m8.
Might be, still harder than EO games, and with actual resource management too.
> the stories, music and art styles.
>The characters? The crazy settings? the weeb things? tactical gameplay?
All of these, and even the ritual. I like a nice grind fest. The slow, methodical, chipping away at a hundred hour game is part of the fun. It's escapism somewhere between genre fiction and vr. Sure the stories boild down to schlock, essentially; but that doesn't make it any less fun while you're in it.
Yea I saw that, wasn't too interested but I'll keep tabs on it.
That's really hard, but I'd say my favorite series are FE (pre-awakening, but Fates was good), SMT (Nocturne, IV, DDS), Chrono Cross, Radiant Historia, Legend of the Dragoon, I dunno what else. DQXI was great, close to one of my favorites with V and IX. I have a hard time keeping track of any coherent list of favorites just because I've played so many. As for least favorites, I never really liked Tales, and I really hated the last few Star Oceans.
Still can’t name a single game? I’ve played most if not all the games mentioned in this thread, except for FFXIII, I ain’t touching that. I think fatlus has a very good track record when it comes to RPGs and their mechanics, specially compared to other developers and publishers. Don’t know why you are sucking Gothic’s dick so much either. I never bitched, you just got defensive about nothing.

>Still can’t name a single game?
So you can't even read?
Do you need subtitles?

>After 30 years SMT is still using basic bitch three tier spells that are either attack/heals or simple stat buffs/reflects
>EO has less mechanical complexity than a literal poverty game series like Elminage
Really hard to take you people seriously, not even NISfags are this bad, you are the new Squarefags.

Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker

SMT5, Sekiro and Digimon Survive

SMT: Strange Journey Redux
this is the most accurate way to describe how I feel. I play some games for packing gameplay, others for compelling plots. I don't get upset when they lack one of those when they get one thing perfectly right.
pic has a joke story but ace gameplay.
Menuing, customization and doing things efficiently is a big part of it for me. I do like all of the other stuff as well.
WRPGs end up with too little direction and sense of progression in pursuit of giving the player the freedom to do anything they want. I also don't care about realism in video games. Fantasy is all good as long as it doesn't break the immersion of the rules and expectations set up by the game itself.
>What are you currently playing?
Nothing right now although I've been recently trying out Shadows of Adam and Cosmic Star Heroine.
>What are you looking forward to?
I need to check the wishlist but aside from how much I enjoyed the old Long Gone Days and Underhero demos I'm unsure. There have been a few new game demos that seem promising, like Light Fairytale had potential but when I tried it the character art was pretty shit and the character models make it feel like an attempt of FF7 DS. Otherwise I'm looking at the Early Access stuff with some trepidation, such as Edge of Eternity which looks... remarkably like a modern FF title in spite of being by some random ass small team.
>Favorite JRPG?
I've always been partial to Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 4, Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario, Live A Live, Xenogears, and the Mother series. I'm not including SRPGs, CRPGs, ARPGs, or games that mix other combat styles into the turn-based framework so there's a LOT I'm not gonna mention.
PC wise I've played the shit out of LiEat (and honestly a lot of stuff translated by VGPerson) and I remembered enjoying NEStalgia back in the day before the team fucked it up.
