started watching Slayers this week and now I kinda wanna play some comfy JRPG, preferably with some sort of simple but fairly expansive and customizable skill system like in Grandia 2, any suggestions?
is Xellos as much of a dick as I remember or I shouldn't get too hyped for him

THE STRONGEST

Based and redpilled.

This. He's more or less the 4th/5th most powerful being in the Slayerverse but enjoys fucking with the main characters more than actually advancing anyone's agendas

Dammit, now I want to rewatch the series, Next was a good time.

>Pani Poni Dash
extremely based

Have there been ANY Slayers-related news recently?

Go play FF9.

Attached: ooo, soft~ PC HD.webm (940x876, 1.74M)

Is this using the mod about the backgrounds?

>tfw you will never fuck lina in the ass

Attached: 1525465160370.jpg (1170x850, 174K)

wasn't that Chrono Trigger-tier in skill progression

Nah, revolution and evolution-r killed the series.

Hasn't been shit since 2009, pretty safe to say that the series is done and dead.

It’s been so long since I’ve watched my copies of Pani Poni Dash that I don’t even remeber what it’s about.

>slayers and kenshin

Attached: 1538960464124.png (128x126, 26K)

Um not sure
>LoN
>Dark lord and their rivals per universe, 8, but with sealed/dead around 4?
>4 mazoku lords, 2 if we dont count Phibrizo and Gaav
>Lina's sister or other water dragon knight but dunno really except for that sister being stronger or just similiar in power to xellos
>some random dudes who read too much claire bible and know how to deal with monsters

And yes, he's one of the most fun character considering his power because his master was crafty and instead of creating priest and general she created priest AND generla in one

Not sure what you mean by that,
but in short, each piece of gear has a skill you can "equip", and if ya wear and use 'em long enough, you master it and no longer need to use the gear to utilize said skills.

It's about touching Serizawa.

Attached: 1171796514711.jpg (3248x2880, 556K)

all i remember is the girl with the glasses and the big forehead was the best girl

Recently (december?) slayers got new novel, google it up, but its again some elves doing shit when gourry and lina was on their way to meet lina parents. Lina is nerfed due to lack of blood talismans and require a ritual to get similiar powerup. And to counter it its ofc fucking mass produced zanafaar armor and beast himself

What’s funny is people praise my anime taste until they find out I detest lucky star so much it made me quit anime.

Nichijou before Nichijou.
Weirdly one of my favorite anime comedies

Dragon's Dogma would do you well

late 80s/early 90s anime was so fucking based

what happened?

Moeblob shit

>Koala

Slayers was mid to late 90s.

As for OP, the SNES Slayers RPG is pretty good. Clearly a dragon quest clone, but fun.

Didn’t lucky star come out before Pani Poni Dash?

>'quitting' a medium because of 1 thing
that's just dumb

But LS was meh as fuck even in 2007.
Especially before they changed directors.

Basically this 80s/90s still had aesthetic, but it’s drifted too far into rainbow kawaii territory. The last series that felt “classic” to me was Space Dandy.

The new Lupin series, which are good, draw in such small numbers compared to Moeshit #10000

Yes.
I know it’s dumb, but it happened. Like I don’t think I have ever hated something like I do Lucky Star. And it soured anime for me since. Like I couldn’t get even bring myself to watch FLCL seasons 2 and 3.

No. PPD came first, and is one of Shaft's earlier masterpieces

The films with just Lina and Naga >>> the actual series
I won't be silenced

Attached: 3.jpg (330x330, 59K)

The new lupin series is underrated as Hell. I hate super hackers and all, but otherwise it rekindled my love for that series.

>flcl seasons 2 AND 3
i'm out of the loop, last i heard a second season was "going to happen soon" but did they really do 2 seasons without me noticing? damn son

Attached: the fuck.jpg (374x430, 51K)

in CT you have a set of skills in a given order that you unlock by leveling up. I thought FF9 is something like that too

Were back to back

FLCL sucks so that makes sense.

I got a tree trunk she could grab if you know what I mean

No LS was 07 and PPD was 09.

no one fucking liked them. the first was a re-hash of the original with characters no one cares about that there isn't even good porn of. second was SJW bullshit.

that makes me feel better. 2 short seasons that function as part one and part two, or is it two seperate stories? I've been behind on lots of good shit because took the plunge on one piece and went so ham watching it that i've been burned out on watching ANYTHING lately, but that's wearing off and i'm looking for some shit to check out. If it's even half as good i'm down. opinions on it? assuming you aren't the guy that didn't watch it.

They came out simultaneously.
Aaand they suck ass.

figured that was the case if I never heard anyone ranting about it, flcl was lightning in a bottle imo

Attached: 1533697024133.jpg (409x618, 58K)

Yes they did two funded by adult swim. I haven’t watched them I here they are very mediocre. The OST is tops though.

Suikoden 2

Doesn't have a complex skill system, but its top tier JRPG at its finest

Just curious how is it sjw?

9 kinda has both, but especially passive skills are often tied to gear and need to be learned. You also cannot equip all your skills at once, leading to extra tactical thinking at times.

No, in FF9 you gain skills from gear by having the gear equipped and getting AP from battles. Once the gauge is full, you can use the skill without the item.

I like how she does whatever the fuck she wants in this game, going against the commands that you select. Really in spirit of her character.

Attached: lona & noga.png (1024x768, 971K)

that's exactly it, this nostalgia re-hash culture hollywood and everyone else is doing is going to crash eventually. people are already getting fatigued by it.
the main cast are girls and they're not hot, one of them is but she's dating adult Chad and one of the eps is about her dumping him in a girl power way, another is about the fat girl making a dress for a competition and winning for no good reason after a dupe loss. it's fucking terrible.

No.
PPD anime started airing in summer 2005, and its style stuck with SHAFT ever since.

there is a slayers snes rpg that is really great.
romhacking.net/translations/1494

theres also a second game but that translation is only partial.

Still have my bootlegged boxset that is almost 20 years old.
Times have changed...

Attached: slayers.jpg (2052x1076, 1.11M)

>tfw an oldfag who's seen over 250 series, but not a single ep of Slayers
Should I bite the bullet?

It's not that good when looking back on it.
Very cliched for today's audience.
You might enjoy it.

I fail to see how that is sjw...

Yes faggot goddamn you are missing some fucking good anime.

Give DD:DA a try, or go for something along the lines of Divinity Original Sin. Both are pretty fun party games;the obvious is Suikoden 1, and 2.

Yes. It might not have stood the test of time, but it's charming. It'd help if you're familiar with tabletop gaming/fantasy tropes. First two seasons are good, then it goes progressively worse.
Best Megumi Hayashibara role to date.

I’ve got the movie and book of spells (dragon slave and explosion array) on VHS...

Seems like I found my next time waster. Thanks!

I'm no stranger to old animus either. In the past 3 years alone, I've marathoned series like HXH 1999, Gintama, and all of Captain Harlock material out there, and enjoyed them a ton.

VHS was too expensive for me when it was the "in" thing.
Didn't start buying a ton of anime until DVD since I bought a release PS2 for playing them.

Attached: Tenchi.jpg (1538x1080, 739K)

OG and Next are tops, try is ok. Revolution and Evolution-R is pretty bad.

I highly suggest catching the OVAs and movies for some delicious Naga action and also the best ED.

youtu.be/s_r8-LgZldE

>tfw Yea Forums's got better taste in chinese cartoons than Yea Forums

Oh same man. I only have about 25 anime VHSs because fuck they were expensive...

DVD use to be bad too. $30 for two/three eps disks killed my wallet.

Are there any rpgs that have a similar feeling and setting to slayers? I already played the slayers snes game

Fuck I remeber sitting in CiCis pizza for hours with my best friends watching Cartoon Network anime like Tenchi.

Your set looks cooler than mine.

which season ends with beating shabranigdu yet again and that green haired dragon demon something who probably summoned him getting a new chance or something like that

All Dragon Quests.

That is why I bought bootlegged anime dvds.
Can't get a whole series for cheap even if the quality wasn't as good it still beat VHS a lot of the time.

I still used VHS to record anime shows on tv like Bubblegum Crisis on the Sci-Fi channel in the 90s or that Crest of the Stars anime later on.

Attached: GTO.jpg (1920x611, 460K)

I probably wouldn't like it if not for nostalgia as it's objectively not very good but I'm having a blast thanks to it's charm and self-awareness
just don't expect anything more than somewhat coherent silly fun

It's been a while since I watched, but that sounds like the end of Next.

Woops meant to say "can" not "can't".
I remember a short anime like Excel Saga costing me over 70 bucks on dvd for the collection back in the early 2000s when a bootlegged copy of all the Slayers episodes (at the time) cost me like 40 bucks. And that was 3 seasons...

I think you are thinking of Try, but they don’t summon Ruby Eye they summon Dark Star.

Nah, the demon dragon has to be Valgaav but he is in Try and also Next ends with Lina summoning L-sama to kill Hellmaster.

Saber Marionette was best Megumi role.

just looked up the character list and yeah it's Try with Gaav lite
kinda bummed I don't have any good seasons left I haven't seen yet
well it's not like I remember more than a vague outline of the story and that the story even matters in the first place

The Tenchi movie where he loses his mother made me cry.
Watched it in the 90s around the time I lost my mother.
youtube.com/watch?v=H6CULqbQqdI

I found dragons dogma unbelievably dry, felt like the exact opposite of comfy fun

I miss talking about Slayers lore, I was big into it. slayers was my first anime and was my first fan fiction read.

Video Girl Ai was best Megumi role.

that shit also existed back then user, you don't see it because it's buried in literal decades of other stuff

So many 90s and early 2000s anime.

Attached: newtype.jpg (1494x1711, 814K)

That was the only issue of newtype USA I kept, I am a huge .hack fanboy and it still pisses me off that the ripoff series became popular instead of the OG.

Slayers actually started in Light Novel form in the late 1980s.
Mid 90s only if you want to count the start of the anime.

well it's almost 3 in the morning here so I'm off to sleep
do keep the thread alive as long as you can and throw in some recs every once in a while, so far suikoden looks like the best

Sorry we offtopicd your thread.

nah, it's the nicest conversation I've had on this site for a while I should leave /wtg/ more often

I have a crap load of them.
Even kept the demo discs.

Attached: Newtype stuff.jpg (2656x1064, 1.12M)

Already played all of those, too

When I moved for the 3rd time I sold my Newtype and Nintendo Power collection. Because moving magazine collections are the literal worst.

You're telling me...
My Newtype magazines all together probably weigh a literal ton.
My 90s Dragonball Z american format comics were just as annoying to move since they are made of such cheap material.

Attached: DBZ VIZ.jpg (1894x1404, 969K)

Lina is my wife. Post more Lina.

Too bad we will never get to see best girl hatefucking xelos and having beautiful dragon monster babies to play with her adopted son

Attached: filia2.jpg (640x519, 39K)

Yeah I bet. I’m really glad I never got into comics.

The only comics I own are mint copies of issue one of Pokémon and Project A-ko.

Was counting the anime.

The SNES video game RPG that has most of the characters predates the anime, funnily enough. Came out 1994. Has some novel characters too.

I am also watching Slayers.

First 10 episodes are Top Kino.

I wish they'd just just end up rebooting Slayers and follow the light novels closely this time. There's a lot to cover and the weird direction the series drift off to after a while was just weird. Also her TV outfit is just hideous.

Attached: lina inverse.jpg (595x842, 591K)

Enjoy user, We'll never see its like again.

Yes please. I don't care what anyone says, Try was a good time.
Really liked their relationship.

OVA outfit isn’t bad.

OVA outfit is THE BEST.

I like your taste user.

>talking about Slayers
>someone in the thread name drops fucking Tenchi
I picked a good night to come to Yea Forums

You won't see anime like this today.
Companies only follow the cheap light novel bandwagon.

Nothing sophisticated comes out...
Everything feels bland and fake.

Where is the anime for us 30+ guys?
I don't want the same high school BS in Japan.

You can do anime based on reality and make it interesting with actual adult characters not taking place in freakin Japan...

Attached: Master Keaton.jpg (2730x1830, 615K)

>someone in the thread name drops fucking Tenchi
I've been seeing quite a few Tenchi posts around in various threads over the last few weeks. Even saw someone mention the old SRPG on the SNES. Not sure what's with the increase in interest, but it's nice to see.

Attached: washu1.jpg (341x1024, 63K)

The last anime I really enjoyed was Panty and Stocking. Everything since just fails to interest me.

My favorite episode of this was the one where they were being held hostage and there was the guy who was a master coward or whatever and that's how he lived so long.

This is the closest thing to a Slayers game I’ve played without it actually being a Slayers game.

The downside is it’s on Saturn. I think some major progress is being made on the emulator front at least.

I must say they got me good with this one.

I'd also like a reboot. A lot would hate it, but I think it would be interesting.

Actual spoilers though for it Amelia was just there for a little bit and left though if it were accurate. Same with Zelgadis.

I would hate to lose both of them, but yeah a faithful reboot would be tops.

My nigga.

>because we know he will rise like a phoenix and save us all, we'll just leave him behind this pillar for now

I think I have the complete set of Newtype USAs, if I'm missing any it's only an issue or two. They're boxed up god knows where at my parent's house and I haven't seen them in a decade, though.

Not that great of a game but the pixel art was nice.
I never got around to putting out a full playthrough.

Records of Lodoss war
Venus Wars

I still have some 90s VHS recording of anime on TV but some of them have gone to shit in quality especially since at the time I would record over old shit once I watched it.

Wild Arms series and Skies of Arcadia capture something close to that feel.

OP if you want a game for that classic anime style you should play La Pucelle. MC is one of those fiery female protagonists you don't really see anymore and the whole game has the feel of a mid 90s anime.

Yeah it is.

Anyways it’s sleep time. I gotta wagie tomorrow. Thanks for the surprisingly good thread for once Yea Forums.

Slayers was apparently quite a big thing from the get-go, huh ?

Attached: 1467298747173.jpg (1680x1050, 289K)

I'm a HUGE N1 fan, and yeah... the game is absolutely AWFUL no wonder why no one really talks about it. Only thing I liked (and still remember) was the opening song.

The gameplay is dated but it was never outright bad outside of the maybe the later parts of the game. I was able to beat it when I was like 16 so it couldn't have been too hard.
The next best things from N1 would be Rhapsody and Disgaea 1.

Slayers was the SAO of it's time in terms of popularity. It was HUGE. Still wonder to this day why the nips didn't push the brand farther. With a proper budget and animation style it could be reborn, but it really need a reboot. Just keep Megumi, but idk how her situation is atm (typical japanese social autism rules.)

I kinda want to finally finish that series, but it was so obviously gay. I mean, I'm bisexual and all, but I don't like these 2 guys together at all.

WHY ISN'T THERE A GOOD ACTION GAME WHERE I CAN PLAY AS LINA?
FUCK I JUST WANT TO SWORDFIGHT WITH POWERFUL SPELLS IN MY BACK POCKET

I always liked that Lina was still good with a sword even though she was a mage, very tasteful

it's always fun to find these random, western references to the big anime of the game's era.

Attached: cs cz.jpg (1024x640, 185K)

Unironically Dark Souls. You could look at games like Pathfinder, Pillars of Eternity and Tyranny that all have create a character and let you be a sword mage. The rabbit hole of create a character games is deep but weirdly not deep enough.

We have better anime threads than a

Jjbbbb

What a nostalgic thread. One of the few anime where I enjoy the dub as well as sub.

>tfw played the GBA game
>didn't realize it was a direct sequel
>first playthrough I derped and got the bad ending

I don’t know anything about the Slayers series
what is it exactly and should I give it a watch or read?

Attached: 1C97E309-9AFA-4FD1-8C69-93687C099C69.jpg (592x555, 60K)

That's the gospel truth. I think the kicker is that I'm not really playing character per se, but a lump of stats given form. I can't give out snarky one liners, I can't go around telling everyone I'm the best and then back it up. I can't really see my character act like my character. I usually don't mind it but every now and again I just crave it, only to find that there's nothing really for my tastes.
I guess I should just take up reading

90's anime is best anime

It's a fantasy comedy. It has typical Japanese "humor" like the main character is flat chested and very insecure about that. Even normies liked it.

Best description I remember reading for it was that it's a typical D&D campaign where the players barely follow the main story and goof off most of the time.

>First two seasons are good,
Include the movies with Naga in the good.

I wish Tylor got brought up more often
the reboot was travesty against humanity

Attached: 742617135828_anime-Tylor-Irresponsible-Captain-TV-Series-DVD-Collection-Remastered-Hyb-Litebox.jpg (709x1000, 563K)

There was a reboot?
Tylor was one of the few anime I watched dubbed...

Xenoblade X was able to scratch that itch a little for me, but it really takes tabletop to get anything close to all of it.

Yep. It was terrible and killed off Tylor for good. At least it wasn't as terrible as the Houshin Engi remake though.

Attached: 4305d87cdb61b891733c4dd807368a9e1497329951_full.jpg (640x915, 227K)

Finished Tylor last year and it instantly shot up into my 3x3. I fucking loved it to bits.

I'm a sucker for lucky idiots, and this one took the cake. I was laughing for around 20 seconds during episode 4 when he was standing there with that wide smile giving that ralgun commander the present with the bomb in it. I wish there were more situations where used his dumb luck to escape out of them, but I was happy with what I got.

Any other anime like that? Those are my favourites. People being underestimated for being idiots and then using dumb luck to pull themselves to victory while having a smile on their face oblivious to what they've just done.

Attached: Kaiji Tylor.webm (640x478, 2.45M)

I fucking that by the end it's impossible to tell if he actually is competent, still just lucky and doesn't give a shit, or recognizes his luck and activley uses it.
I can't think of any series that does the lucky underdog story at all, or if they do they certainly don't do it well.

>Finally getting to play a dense but sweet amazon who doesn't understand why tripping and using poisons aren't very knightly things to do
>playing a mage who's more of a mad doctor and dissects everything in order to incorporate it into her design
>A bard who falls in a deep romantic love with a maiden... in every single town he visits.

Tabletop is fun. Now if only regular sessions were a possibility in this reality. Or if not that, I want a game where I can make a character, like, a real character, a party of characters, instead of an avatar

First show that comes to mind is the Tenchi spinoff GXP where the protagonist is super unlucky but then becomes the opposite when he starts amassing a harem in space. It's not perfect, but if you're into Tenchi and its universe, then I would recommend it.

>slayers
>jrpg
Slayers is litterally based on pnp DnD session

>A bard who falls in a deep romantic love with a maiden... in every single town he visits.
This is the correct way of playing a bard.

He just wanted to live life in his own carefree way, he probably never knew how lucky he was. The crew on the other hand were actually pretty fucking based and were able to work out that they have such a stupid amount of luck that they should just use it to their advantage, and actually did to find Tylor when he was captured. They just warped randomly and found the exact ship that he was in.

I'll look it up, thanks.

It's cheating, but if you want an SJRPG, play FF Tactics, Advance, or Advance 2. The further you go down the production order, the more intricate the job mixing becomes. You can make some disgusting killing machines all 3 of those games.

Just remember that paladin is NOT a damage class

>Comfy Slayers thread
>Recommends some of the most convoluted, pain-in-the-ass games of grinding and asinine mechanics ever.

Get out.

There is barely any grinding in it though? Game is a cakewalk to 100% even on hard.

The artstyle for the original Shining Force games always reminded me of Slayers. I really recommend them if you like SRPGs, and bonus points because they have exploration between battles.

The towns in the original Shining Force are top notch.

The Shining series is one of the saddest falls from grace ever.

Popful Mail, but it's basically a platformer with RPG elements, made by the same guys who did Ys

Original PC98 version: God tier FM synth, but choppy gameplay

Jap Sega CD: much easier to play

English Sega CD version: goofy Working Designs translation and tons of gameplay changes to make it harder

there's a SNES version too but I've never played it

It's still good. There was always plenty of isekai anime since before it got so focused with being "isekai" from LN adaptations.

Your taste is probably entrylevel shit if that's what made you quit. They probably just think you're retarded.

So, like TFS At The Table, then?

The problem with modern isekai, at least in my opnion, isn't the "from another world" part, but rather the "I accidentally became stronger than god" part.

>Nah, revolution and evolution-r killed the series.
You know I enjoyed them to an extent but they really were stupid to do when they had more real story to pull from.
I was so looking forward to hilarity with Gourry's Blast sword... but no.

blessed sword gourrey sounds good

The illustrator had open heart surgery recently so they delayed the BD's

Now we'll have to wait a couple of extra months to see if they're a shitty upscale like the first set
