Because it used Disney's BEST films to get started and at least a chunk of games Disney's films of the highest quality that are timeless were re-used (in Days, in CoM, in Coded). By now they're largely all out of quality Disney films. And no one is actually going to be excited for a Coco or Moana world and good god I would despise a Wreck It Ralph world, that movie was shit (and the sequel was so shit even the original fans of it complain about it).
The Disney element is what sells the games, and sadly that's gone down in quality unless you look forward to shit like Brave or Zootopia (well furries want a furry model of Sora based on an animal that much is a given because of SFM). KH has a lot of issues, the story is seriously fucking stupid and badly executed. And the gameplay? Most of it is mediocre. KH fanboys are so deluded they think Command Deck shit is actually good when it was just "functional" because it was born on handhelds which had limitations. No way could the PSP handle Command Menu style KH games.
I say KH is about to start seeing diminished interest and reduced sales in future releases. A combination of:
- Unreliable shoddy gameplay.
- Bad story.
- And lack of good Disney see Is going to impact sales.

Yea but even when it went "full anime" the things that happened were to push Sora's story arc. The biggest issue is after KH1, Sora's personal growth story is pretty much over. We get a taste of some other character development with Roxas at the beginning of KH2 but after that, the game doesn't play with any universal themes. It was all done in KH1. no matter what happens, everyone can relate to growing up, growing distant from friends, and trying to hold onto innocence and simpler times despite everything trying to take it from you. Everyone can understand friendship, and believing in doing the right thing no matter what obstacles make it challenging. KH1 is very simple at it's roots, and it allows for very relatable and understandable character development. Roxas focuses on this as well, although I'd say even better than KH1. once that's done though, KH2 instead starts focusing on lore and some bigger picture plot which is by far the worst part of 1. The entire series has focused on this now ever since.

The kingdom hearts aesthetic is the best thing in vidya for me. The visual style of the game, the character designs, the use of colors and the sound design and the way the music all tie in to has always been fantastic. Pooh was really well done throughout the series. When I first played through KH1 the world seemed like such a bite and a nuisance, so I skipped it on the first playthrough. When I came back, I realized how charming and well written it was. The antics, adventures, the level where you're all sticking together in the cave to be brave, and that final gazing at the stars. Even though it was gimped in 3, Sora coming back and assuring Pooh nothing's changed while having an inner monologue about how it was a lie put a lump in my throat.

I think your perspective is unlike most which is why it seems odd to you. Simply pitching the words "Square Enix RPG + Disney" makes a lot of people interested and marketers drool. First in KHUX realm after the keyblade war and then again after checking in to hotel Sora for 10 years, where like the realm of darkness the sleeping realm doesn't have time flow the same way because Ventus' heart was away from his body. The KHUX thing may not be that time stopped moving, but rather he was in a different timeline and something transported him into the future in the timeline we've been seeing

I mean that just seems like it defeats the purpose of a character progression game like this, maybe not entirely but partially. Part of the fun is learning new abilities. So if anything just give yourself restrictions if you really want like no magic on bosses or no maxing stats with armor and accessories. One of the things with this game in comparison to others that they changed is that they give you so much stat efficient gear to equip all the time, especially if you are doing photo missions and emblems to where even if you are eating attacks from strong enemies it doesn't matter much because you have so much defense
