Why don't you spend that half hour on learning to block and finding out which normals beat which ones instead? That's going to teach you much more than learning a complex combo at this stage if you're new to the genre. The only combo you really need to know is your simplest most damaging one that doesn't require anything else like super meter or a counter hit.

I've tried learning to react to overheads and aerials too but it's fucking hard. I think also what would help is learning blockstrings so I know when I can mash out of something, but I don't really get how to do that either. In the end, I always end up just throwing stuff out there in matches and it almost always fails. This is by far the most confusing thing so far, it's like a solid wall blocking my progress.

Just remember visually what the exact blockstring you are losing to looks like and try and replicate that in training mode and have the computer either perform it against you or you perform that same blockstring against them and have them auto-reversal/counter attack. Should show you a few things.

Actually this is actually good progress, you're slowly learning what does and doesn't work by pure raw experience. This is basically how we learnt in the old days.
