Anyone else feel like nostalgiafagging over FFXI? Current players are cool too.
Did you ever look up to someone when you were still a filthy scrub?
Did you ever have someone look up to you after you got better? How'd they turn out? Everyone that looked up to me ended up quitting within the year.

some random elf girl knew me from early on, i didn't really speak to them much but they were always pleased to see me. we were both from Sandy and must have started around the same time and been in a few EXP parties together. i quickly advanced at a much higher rate, eventually clearing CoP, getting into a HNMLS and all that, etc, whilst they were still finding their feet, so they kind of looked up to me a i suppose.

later on i saw them speaking like kind of a snobby know-it-all to other new players. because she was in a sky shell. and wore full RDM AF as her actual gearset.

i dont really have a point but your questions reminded me of that.

I thought my first linkshell leader who was a lv40 WAR was a badass because he dual wielded a sword and axe. I miss finding even the smallest things amazing.

the first time i went to Sky, was for Kirin. when we got there, some chinese RMT were kiting him, and some other shell were harassing them. apparently they had been failing at this shit for so long she had run out of MP. eventually one some cheeky hero snuck into their alliance, stole claim, and gave it to us.

i remember being quite worried that i would get banned or something for being a part of this. but of course i would learn, GMs rarely gave a single shit about aspects such as MPK, camp-stealing, HNM drama, etc.

there was also the story of Vrtra spawning or somehow clipping up onto the surface of KRT and killing GMs as they tried to tackle it, you guys remember that? it was like part of FFXI mythology.

fuck i loved this game.

>tfw buying your first haubergeon

Never played it back in the day, only private servers. No nostalgia for it at all. I still think the CoP era is the best bloody MMO ever made, and loathe the item level era.

Played a RDM and BST because I was going to school and had weird hours. Became friends with servers best NIN tank. He would tell me about his HNMLS and how he had to help people he hated, I never asked him for shit because I didn't want to bother him. During pops I would interfere with JP linkshells by trying to MPK them. In general chat the NA linkshells would denounce me while cheering me on in MSNmessenger. Then help me do story missions at a later date. I did get a bad reputation from the general population of my server for doing this, I did murder a lot of RMT fishing bots too. Good times, would do it all over again.

Immense amount of nostalgia. Occasianally have dreams about it.

I quit after the dlc came out after ahrt uhrgan or whatever it was called.
Took me 9 months to hit 75 on main. A year to get BLM af2 hat from dynamis.but I had the 4th seven eyes on our server. Still friends with my LS people even though I’ve never met half of them as we live in different countries. Some of them got married.

I did have some people look up to me when I was levelling THF and only level 20 or so because they reconised the LS I was in and I had +1 gear in every slot even if it made next to no difference.

We idolised our LS leader. Much to the amusement of rival end game shells.

Led a HNM shell for most of my time playing and because I almost always played RDM I had a lot of little dudes that would constantly message me to ask things. It was nice having a little following of people to help and mentor.

>Seveneyes

Brings back bad memories for me. My LS held a near monopoly over Khimaira for the longest time, our sister LS killed the first one to pop and from that point out we killed nearly every single spawn from the second onward. I'd have to guess we killed at least 155 out of the first 160 and we had so many Seveneyes you couldn't even give them away, didn't help that the sword dropped once out of every 50~ kills.

Awe man, loved playing this game. I started even before the game was released in North America. At the time, an adviersory panel know as GAP, was doing a givaway for "beta" testers and I was chosen to play.
Was super cool trying out the classes and looking at the areas ahead of time. For the reward being in the program, they actually gave me the game (which came with a HDD) for free.
So continued to play it till aht urgan came out and quit a little after.
Have way too many fond memories, but one that I can remember would be when I was level a new job, monk I think, and I was helping two other newbies learn the ropes.
I thought them how to set up macros for vokes and tp shouts, enmity management, healing priority, shit like that.
Being only 3 of us at the time, I showed them how team work was played in the game and had a blast doing it. Reduced downtime heavily and they seemed to be having a great time as well.

Ah good times....

>tfw was in the beta too

we probably played together at some point

Oh nice, we probably did. I was a Mithra named Dilar and continued using once it hit retail. I remember returning it earlier than when we were supposed to. People on the forums freaked me out about breaking some rules if we didn't, so never got to partake in the even on the last day of the beta server. I saw pics and wish I still played till the end.
Oh well, was fun and I still have the email they sent me many years ago. I doubt the images will load on it, but at least the text is readable.

Just remake the fucking game as a single player with updated graphics that plays like a mix of FF12 and then the pawn system from dragon's dogma so you can invite other peoples characters with their own specific gambits to your party for fights.

Retail is pretty good right now, with monthly battle content updates. I wish the current team would learn how to do cutscenes, so we could have new side quests. A shame they don't. The new balancing has been pretty great too.

I came back a few months ago for the hd mods but the people making them seem to of lost interest lately, was 4-5 people doing it but they all stopped it seems.

They literally rolled the credits.

This image brings a question to mind: What are the top 3 best linkshell colors? Black is one of the worst.

Sometimes, can find some good FFXI streams. For the most part, it's private server garbage and absolute degenerates though. twitch.tv/directory/game/Final Fantasy XI Online

I thought streaming private servers were against ToS

Twitch doesn't seem to want to do anything about it, I've reported private server streamers many times, and nothing has ever been done.

We dominated Fafnir and aspid for years. Until the expansion pushed people through levelling faster and everyone wanted a riddl. Used to be maybe 15 people at nidhog/faf then later it got to like 200.

We had so many riddls thou, (like 40 or so) even some of our blms had them lol

Pink is in the top 3.

They announced yesterday they have some big plans for 2020.

not 2020. the 20th anniversary. that's 2022 / 2023 depending on if they're talking about JP or NA.

"we're going to focus our development and operations on a long-term goal of the twentieth anniversary. "

Well that at least tells people they game is going to be around and updated for at least another 4 years or so i guess.

Reading through this thread makes me curse myself for being born in '98 and not getting a PC until 2009.
Godspeed to you all. Perhaps one day I can be just as nostalgic about XIV as you guys are about XI (which I currently doubt).

XIV is fine in its own right, but there's nothing about it that would evoke nostalgia in anyone. It's just another game, that feels entirely like a game. XI was an experience, gameplay wise and socially.

>get the itch to play when threads like this pop up
>know it won't be the same without the LS
>would just wander around Wajaom Woodlands for an hour before unsubscribing again
It hurts.

Fuck off furfags

What was the galka's story? Is there any place I can brush up on the lore of the game?

>ff11
>but with modern controls and QoL changes
I'd play it, but I just fucking can't get into the dated as fuck controls it has.

>I've reported private server streamers
Why? Does it bring joy to your day to try ruining people's fun?

I had a role model starting out. I begged them for help with every little thing. They began playing sporadically and I was forced to find my own way for a while. One day, out of boredom, I went to the Dunes and PL'd a random xp party. This party would eventually become a core group I cleared Abyssea content with.
