Is it dead competitively? No stupid answers but this is Yea Forums

Yes, Wobbling and Jigglypuff killed it

And the EVO kickout, too

We'll see how full bloom looks

Yes it's dead please stop talking about this white supremacist game

The people playing this fucking game will keep it alive for as long as they can, as long as there are still functional CRTs and slightly dysfunctional controllers, these smelly fuckers will keep playing

TL;DR: IT'S NOT OVER YET

How did Wobbling kill it? Wobbling has been a thing for years now, did some new ICs tech get discovered?

What.

Elaborate

They'll never stop the Melee
Have no fear, they have tournies for years
Like, mango goes to rehab
Maybe hbox gets a fan
Has Axe ever won a tourny?

Theres still a pretty active locals scene for just about every major city, but its certainly not gonna grow that well. The entire appeal is the abillity to absolutely shit on somebody, and that doesn't exactly encourage new players.

There will probably always be a thirst for Melee but I think the Jiggly dominance at top level has kind of cast doubt on the 20XX legend.

I think if they want to encourage new players CRTs have to go. No normalfag is going to scour every goodwill for a grimey half working picture box.

Hbox will win every tournament he attends this year except for maybe 1 of em.

Don't forget Fox mains screaming at wobbling

>No trans icons
>Little diversity
>Only people who play it only care about the video gamey stuff and not the fandom

The ultimate fandom is so much more accepting compared to this white male shit

Emulator and netplay is a thing. Great for new players.
CRTs will always be a thing at locals though because the low lag alternatives are much more complicated and expensive (you need a low lag monitor AND an expensive lagless component to VGA converter, and the cheap chink ones are laggy)
If you don't understand why CRTs are a thing then just don't bother replying.

There's too many people playing the game and having fun for it to die. Even if big tournaments stop happening, people are still going to keep playing it. No one's going to stop having fun because some fags stop making money off it.

or Fox mains screaming at anything other then other Fox/Falco mains

Melee is the best online Smash. Brawl, 4, Ultimate are complete shit online.

???

absolutely based and redpilled

If you think the game is dying then just do some research. There are a fuckton of majors planned. Way more than most of the EVO titles have. Stop being retarded.

I understand why and I love CRTs, its just that for the normalfag who has a 4k 55inch tv with atrocious input lag it might turn them off when they can just play farknite or whatever flavor of the month.

retarded samefag

Yes

Thats why i said “competitively”

How about a crazy ditto
Where wobbling happens
And doodoodoo doodoo

Links?

No. A game is only dead when no one is playing it and SSBM still has super-majors each year that isn't EVO.
It's definitely slowed down since 2015, where I think it peaked, but the comp scene is a lot healthier than a lot of fighting games.

Melee players openly hates diversity. They want the same stagnant shit smelee they want for five or ten more years.

Why the fuck did this make me laugh?

As a melee fan and first hour brawl/tr4sh hater, ultimate is now an actual possible replacement for melee, it's almost as fast and plays very well. I think if melee disappears form the esport scene it's because ultimate is just so good.

We got Full Bloom around the corner. Smash Summit in summer, Smashcon is probably not far from that.
CEO, Shine, Get on My Level, The Big House are other large tourneys.

But nobody is stopping them from playing on their bad TV. Are you literally making the argument that they should start using inferior equipment at tournaments just so a clueless casual player doesn't feel left out for not having a CRT?

It's unclear what you're trying to say, unless it's just some "CRTs are for fags" bait

They could by all means switch to using modern equipment at tournaments (like they did at EVO '13) but it's just more complicated and in some cases less reliable (as in you can trust a CRT is fine 99% of the time, but a monitor+converter setup you don't know ahead of time that it will actually be lagless). Every CRT works, but not all monitors do is what I'm saying.

How many of those are exclusively melee?

because they took the lyrics from a Simpsons parody of a Billy Joel song and made the lyrics about Super Smash Bros Melee? Seems pretty straightforward to me user

With Slippi out and being able to convert footage to Dolphin quality in real time, I think the CRT issue has become less significant because viewers will get the high quality video.

Shine and Smash Summit, I believe. I'm not really sure, because I don't think most of these have been officially announced yet. Line-ups will likely include at least SSBU as well.

So say I play on my flatscreen and get good, the timing for inputs will be completely different once i go to a tournament with a CRT and Ill have to adjust then. I have no problems with CRTs and its sad that they are dying, but the community has to think about the future if they want to thrive and get new players.

With the right setup, Dolphin can have less input delay than console+CRT. New players don't need to buy CRTs or consoles anymore to get started. Just a controller and adapter. Its great.
In terms of replacing console setups with emulator, the problem is reliability. The original hardware will never skip a frame or anything, but emulator, since it runs on a PC, will always have the potential for little quirks and errors that can screw things up.
But as far as the game being accessible to new players, it is better than ever with stuff Dolphin netplay. The netplay for Melee is better than almost any fighting game I have ever played (Skullgirls being the best, because of GGPO).

Hmmm, but when it comes to laggy TVs, they don't consistently lag the same. So if you were to adopt a standard you can't just say "this specific 50" Samsung" or w/e. The great thing about CRTs is they provide the lowest possible input lag you can get with a console, AND they are almost all the same (there may be some rare cases of some CRTs lagging more than others).

I don't see how they could ever move away from the CRT standard because it would be a downgrade. How could you think its a good idea to switch to using inferior and less consistent equipment?

You're right and I wish we would just move on to using Dolphin FM as a standard.
But, that's never happening for larger tourneys that are being streamed, because people are afraid Nintendo won't like it and deny streaming rights.
I've always been weary of Nintendo sponsorship because of this. They've shown time and time again that they don't give a single fuck about Melee and would rather see it disappear so they can focus on whatever Smash game is new. Nintendo is only a hurdle for the Melee scene, but the alternative is going the way of PM and dramatically cutting down viewership and possibly shrinking the scene down to a fragment of it's current size.
There must come a time where CRTs are simply too hard to come by, or become too much of a logistical nightmare and GC/Wii set-ups just aren't viable anymore.

Anther's Smashladder is a godsend for the scene. It really can not be understated how important that place is for the longevity of the game.

But as for CRTs eventually not existing, this is a problem. The solution will almost certainly end up being more expensive though. Tournaments will likely be set up with low input lag computer monitors and a lagless adapter (EVO 2013 being an example). It would be awful to just abandon CRTs and say "anything goes" with people bringing in random flatscreen TVs. It would be too inconsistent. It would be a complete mess.

The thing about these big screen TVs is its not like they have just a few frames of latency. Its more like upwards of 50-100ms. Meanwhile your typical computer monitors will often only have like a frame or two, so that is what I expect them to move towards.

It's still a top 5 competitive game, but it's also clearly on the way out. If the Meleefags hadn't been such bitches over the years, they'd still be at Evo.

I think it will be a perennial side tournament, regardless, like SF2 super turbo. 5 years from now, winner gets a pair of Smash brothers socks and their hotel room paid for kind of money.

>It would be awful to just abandon CRTs and say "anything goes" with people bringing in random flatscreen TVs
Just use regular monitors. A very average PC monitor running Dolphin will have LESS input lag than using a traditional CRT set-up. That's why you up the buffer to at least 5-6 when playing netplay. To simulate the CRT experience to keep things consistent no matter where you play.
I don't really get your point of big screen TVs. You would never use them, other than streaming the video through a splitter for the audience to see it or something.

I was referring to playing on console though.
Emulator introduces other problems like reliability (its never perfect, framerate drops can happen, albeit rare). But you're right that Dolphin can have less lag than a console.
Also keep in mind that emulator setups are WAY more expensive than console setups, and they take up more space. Factor in all the headaches that come with it being on a Windows PC also and you can see why consoles are preferred even for other fighting games that are cross platform.
I'm not really a fan of consoles at all, but I can respect how they are just better logistically when it comes to running fighting game tournaments.

But anyway, looking way forward, Dolphin may be an inevitability should the supply of Gamecubes or Wiis become quite scarce.
