You know what is sad? This basically happened. I will never understand why Valve wouldn't just make HL3, the hype alone would boost Steam beyond anything they could imagine. It would fucking blow up the gaming part of the net. Do they hate money? Do they hate fans? I will never fucking understand

Because the time/effort invested in making a shitty MOBA with hats, achievements, and trading cards running on 15 year old tech is less than in making a full fledged single player FPS campaign, possibly with an updated game engine (that is competitive compared with what's on the market now). Furthermore, people will buy the single player game once whereas little kids will continually pay for hats and upgrades in the "free to play" cancer game.
Video games are not "art", they're a business. Half Life is not Gabe's "baby", to him it's just an outdated product that won't bring in sufficient revenue.
