I think FoW is okay, it adds a layer of strategy to the game, what is bullshit is that it doesn't seem to affect AI.

FoW is what makes it fun, controlling information and making gambles are a part of the game. The improvements that Days of Ruin made to FoW made it a lot more fun too.
Advance Wars doesn't have hero units that you train and level up. However you do have a commander, which can give a stat bonus and penalty to certain unit types.
