The problem is it went way too far the opposite direction where he was essentially just a really big lizard and nothing else. You need to get a balance between realistic style while keeping their alien/supernatural esc. core which I think the film (for the most part) those well. They're realistic but you can still tell they're Pokemon because they understood when to also keep certain exaggerated features.

That's why most people are okay with the Pokemon movie but have issue with the Sonic film. Mr. Mime still looks like Mr. Mime. Sonic meanwhile looks like a deformed midget.
