Is it possible that the game means different things to different people?

>X meme?
god fucking damn I hate this site

80% Yea Forums meme

its too hard

>not liking x is meme
you need to go back

best nintendo game ever made

Its too clunky and chopped up.
DKC games should be about speed, precision and timing. Not stopping you each screen scroll to introduce you to a new mechanic to get to the next screen, to do another mechanic, to scroll to the next screen and so on.

Yikes...

It really is that good. But nobody will tell you that Returns is almoat as good.

it's a masterpiece
best platformer of the century

you didn't play the game

then get out faggot

Did you even play it? Are you asking people if it's bad so that you don't HAVE to play it?

Nintendo didn't make it.

I did

When the fuck did the game ever stop you in your tracks to teach you about a new mechanic? The game has like, 5 mechanics. There's no tutorials whatsoever. This game is more about speed precision and timing than any other DKC. Please show me proof of you beating Bopopolis.

It's an amazing game. Each level is unique and the water levels are actually good (which is very rare for a platformer).

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

33.33333333333333(4)% Yea Forums meme and 66.66666666666666(6)% very good 2D platforming

Probably the best 2D platformer ever made, or at least it's in the top 3.

He probably means how on a first playthrough you might encounter a new type of obstacle in each level, so each level has you "learning" something new to proceed.

Here's an example
youtube.com/watch?v=gSn5ycZ2SIQ
The level starts and brings you up to the first enemy, which is on fire
It teaches you that you must pick up water blobs to throw on burning enemies, scroll to next screen.
Now there is more on fire, the game stops and you must put out the animal on fire.
Scroll to next screen.
Now the ground is on fire, and it teaches you about using lianas to avoid the fire. You pass it and scroll onto next screen.
The screen stops, teaches you to put out firey bushes. Scroll on to next.

Very choppy, very clunky.
Another example.
youtube.com/watch?v=kTk4DpQgV_Y
The level starts, brings you to the first enemy. Level stops. Teaches you about melon bombs. Learn it, and scroll onto next screen.
Goes up to drills, teaching you of the dangers from the environment. Scrolls on to the next.

And this is all the game is. It just scrolls to next screen. Stops. Present you with a mechanic. You move on, scroll. Stop. Scroll. Stop.

sounds like every single 2D platformer I have played
find me 1 platformer that doesnt introduce a mechanic early in the stage and then throw more of the same mechanic later in the same stage

Now lets look at DKC, which is less flashy. Has less explosions in the background that rains down on you and less novelty type worlds (like jello world)
youtube.com/watch?v=qVJ5tBK3rK4

Its all about speed. All about perfect precision, all about getting to the end as fast as possible. Very similar in feel to the first Mario game.
No stops. No scrolling. Almost like a pinball game.

>comparing a speed run to a lets play
okay buddy

STOP AND GO STATION YOU FUCKING FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAG
DKC has gimmick levels too. DKC2 has a fuckton of them. Shut up.

It's super different from the old DKC games to the point it's like comparing apples and oranges. That said I'd argue it's one of the best modern platformers made in years and years, and arguably one of the best platformers ever made.
Just going right from the original DKC trilogy to DKCR or DKCTF makes it feel weird in comparison. That said I have a ton of fun rushing through levels using the momentum if Cranky's Cane in TF, shits a lot of fun. My only real hot take as a DKC mega-autist who visits DKC Atlas forums and replays the games quite often, I'd argue that Tropical Freeze has just as much character as the old games, or SOUL.

You sound like a much more involved fan than I am, so while you are entitled to your hot take, I can't help but feel betrayed you said that.

Stop and go station is more like a pinball course than any of the other courses
youtube.com/watch?v=LgvrQ2fONVU
It was one example I didn't use to be more fair. It never halts you in your tracks like DKCTF does at every turn, DKCTF never allows you to swoosh through the stages.

>DKC games should be about speed, precision and timing.
that's exactly what retro's dkc games are, even more so than rare's

there's a far higher skill ceiling in dkcr and tf than in the original trilogy, which you should have known had you played the time attack mode

Yikes

>DKCTF never allows you to swoosh through the stages
It does though. It really does. The water and melon bombs are just extensions of the regular barrel-carrying mechanic. Once you know how they interact with the environment you really don't have to think about it that much. It's just not a big deal.

Not them, but are you implying that none of the Rareware DKC games never had levels like that? Because they definitely did. DKC3 in particular has a shit ton.

returns franchise has less soul, but MORE character.

>stop and go station
The whole point of it is to move quickly through it without stopping. It only stops if you're not fast enough.
Look at this video and tell me where you're stopped apart from collecting optional items.

>nintendo is on the box
>retro is a nintendo owned company
>somehow not a nintendo game

Okay retard

Publisher != developer

>donkey kong is a nintendo franchise
>still somehow not considered a nintendo game

retro studios is as much nintendo as epd tokyo

I know you're shitposting, but I'm just going to leave this here so that somebody doesn't mistake your post for something that should be taken seriously.

Nintendo owns Retro Studios, you retards.

>Retro Studios, Inc. is an American video game developer and subsidiary of Nintendo based in Austin, Texas. The studio is best known for its work on the Metroid Prime and Donkey Kong Country series, and has contributed to several other Nintendo-developed projects, such as Metroid Prime Hunters and Mario Kart 7.
stop b8ing

>It's super different from the old DKC games to the point it's like comparing apples and oranges.
I agree. I like the original trilogy but Returns and Tropical Freeze don't even feel like they're Donkey Kong games. The approach to level design and movement is foreign in comparison.

That's like saying Sony made God of War because they own Santa Monica Studios.

man this game is so cool

The soundtrack is godtier in tropical freeze

god of war is unanimously referred to as a sony series. note how in my original post I never said nintendo made it, just that it is the best nintendo game. kill yourself you retard.

yes, both statements would be correct, as well as saying that you're retarded

That's a good thing

This but unironically.
youtube.com/watch?v=WA2WjP6sgrc

based retard

Neither. It's a great platformer with some minor problems.

It really isn't. The bosses are way too hard for a platformer. Everything else is fantastic, but the bosses are mercilessly hard.

on par with the best platformers from the golden age and it has the the second best level design of all time just behind SMW2.

Attached: gamespot_tropicalfreeze.jpg (1184x532, 115K)

So what's obvious here is that the original DKC introduces the main hazard of the level in a safer environment before letting it get more complicated as you progress. Like any good platformer. I can't imagine how you look at how Tropical Freeze has more hazards that escalate and later combine then think that's bad. In the TF example you posted, the player is trying to get every collectable in the level, making your comparison completely dishonest.

What the actual fuck did he mean by this?

>Video game """"""""""journalist"""""""""" is retarded
Didn't see that one coming

>SHINY gold medal
n-nani?

>DKC Tropical "4 hearts and saves after every level" Freeze is too hard
Nigga did you even play DKC2?

Freeze is way harder than 2.

Tropical Freeze is an example of a game that's hard but forgiving
I'd actually say that TF is way harder than 2 at a base level, but since it's much more forgiving it seems easier

>A special shiny gold medal can be obtained if the Kongs finish the level at a particular time within the standard gold medal time limit. The milestone times for shiny gold medals are never displayed nor made clear.

Literally one of if not the best platformer of all time.

Retro at this point has BTFO of Rare as best third party developer to partner with Nintendo and if Nintendo is smart they'll keep them for years on end.

I would assume it requires to beat the gold time without taking damage?

Nah, the only thing that matters is speed.

It's hard for me to judge. As an adult I did not struggle anywhere in the entire game in Tropical Freeze, I must have lost about five lives overall. As a kid, I remember struggling a lot in Toxic Tower and Animal Antics in 2, but I was a kid so I'm not sure it counts.

Did you go for the KONG letters and play the K levels? Those are the hardest and most fun levels in the game.

Yeah I did everything except the time trials, though I will give them a go one day. It was the first temple level where I struggled, I couldn't time my super jumps correctly. But that classic music and the way you have to run up to the challenge each time is really fun, I loved all the K levels.
