To be fair, Star Allies itself exists for the sole reason of being a ball of references. Compared to older games, there's almost no substance to the gameplay and very little innovation, and the level design is at an all time low. It's just "look you can play as Marx and do a bunch of epic retro attacks that kill everything on screen". Yes I know, Kirby has the "it's easy because it's comfy" argument on its side, but Star Allies traded in all its level design for flat and bland areas to accommodate four-player chaos, which it had no excuse to do since Return to Dream Land had both four-player capability AND interesting level design.
