So I think we can all agree that, whatever its flaws, MGSV's core gameplay mechanics are very solid and fun.
This came as quite a shock to me. I was never able to get far into MGS1-3 (I never played 4) because they have some of the clunkiest controls and camera systems I've experienced in all of gaming, to the point I find them essentially unplayable. This has nothing to do with how old the games are either. I've had no problems enjoying stealth games that released at the same time as MGS-1-3, such as the Splinter Cell and Thief games.
So my question is: How did Kojima make such a huge turnaround? Or is it not because of Kojima at all, but because of the employees at Konami?
MGS3 is clunky, but the mechanics are just as deep (probably deeper) than MGSV and it has superior level design too.
MGSV really was a turning point though. Feels like the first MGS game that didn't control like ass. Apart from MGS4, but the level design in that game was total ass.
Carson James
Why do you keep making MGS threads? There's like 5 of them up right now. Learn to use the catalog faggot.
Evan Foster
>MGS3 is clunky, but the mechanics are just as deep (probably deeper) than MGSV and it has superior level design too.
>jungle setting >designed as a series of corridors with frequent loading screens in between >great level design Yeah, no. The amount of different approaches you can take in MGSV missions completely dwarves MGS3's contrained levels.
>to the point I find them essentially unplayable interesting way to phrase "I couldnt adapt so I gave up"
Henry Russell
>interesting way to phrase "I couldnt adapt so I gave up" Adapt for what purpose? What purpose do MGS1-3 atrocious controls/camera systems serve, that couldn't be achieved with a much better control/camera system?
Dylan Collins
I think MGS 1 & 2s camera is fine for the indoor, boxy environments, ideal would be able to zoom out to a level like the MSX games. Have you played the subsistence version of 3 with the 3D camera, completely changes the feel of the game
Oliver Myers
>I think MGS 1 & 2s camera is fine for the indoor, boxy environments It absolutely isn't. You can barely see anything in front of you, which is presumably why the game needs to provide you with a radar that shows you the lay-out of the environment and enemy positions. Which is also bad design, since instead of paying attention to your environment like you would on a normal game, your eyes are permanently fixed on what is essentually a mini-map.
MGS1-2 are 3D games that don't even take advantage of being 3D, since they use a 2D top-down view. They're atrociously designed games by any standard.
Alexander Torres
>stop making threads about videogames
William Nelson
This guy gets it.
Justin Bell
first mgs was made within the limitations of playstation hardware. only 2 is badly designed for not taking the advantage of PS2 but thats because mgs2 is a parody of the first game.
Ryan Jones
Kojima unironically loved Assassin's Creed series and wanted to make a game like that. That's why MGSV is just Ubisoft openworld.
Cameron Evans
Why do people say MGSV has good gameplay? Because it's incredibly easy? Because it's a boring walking simulator?
Joshua Anderson
Because there are are a million different viable ways to solve any problem and it encourages emergent gameplay.
Chase Jenkins
Nice bait
Leo Miller
>shoot shits >tranq and fulton good ones wow
Gavin Nelson
>fukushima keeping kojimas crazy in check >game gets good >fukushima leaves >nobody keeping kojimas crazy in check >game goes to shit it's not rocket science.
tranq2win describes mgs2 and mgs3 as much as it does mgsv
Connor Morris
Fukushimas involvement is highly exaggerated at times. The guy wrote some optional codecs and that's about it. Kojima is the one responsible for most of the codecs, all the other dialogue, scenes, characters, etc.
Brayden Williams
It has good gameplay, but using some of the most OP equipment did make it super easy, the way to solve this issue is to not use the cheesy strategies and instead give yourself a challenge Subsistence was good but the lack of equipment you could grab from enemies sucked and mods are essentially needed to play the game to its max potential
so... v has as shit gameplay as the previous titles. glad that we agree!
Hudson Cruz
>first mgs was made within the limitations of playstation hardware. What limitations? Tenchu came out BEFORE MGS and had a normal 3D camera system.
Mason Robinson
This is peak zoomer posting. >Boring empty open world GOOD >Meticulously crafted level design BAD
Jacob Adams
Because it does, however OP is still a pleb for saying 1-4 is bad. I can understand 1 being a bit dated but 2-4 are amazing games that are fun to play. New players tend to complain about the controls but it just takes some getting use to. I replay these games pretty often, and you can see ahead of you just fine in 2. Especially on the Tanker, and really anywhere else. People just exposing themselves as casuals who need first person for everything.
Aiden Hernandez
But MGSV is the only game in the series with competent gameplay, so are you saying Fukushima had a detrimental effect to the series?
And how did he keep Kojima in check? MGS1-4 are crazier than MGSV, which is generally criticized for being bland.
Oh so it was just AC fag shitposting as usual. Thread is okay to abandon now. Why are you such a fucking faggot? Get a life
Alexander Wilson
You can see even less with a top down perspective. MGS1 gameplay is effectively a 2D game outside of shitty gimmicks like the helicopter and metal gear fights.
ACfag is bored of shitposting about Metroid these days?
Nathaniel Howard
>Oh so it was just AC fag shitposting as usual. Thread is okay to abandon now. Why are you such a fucking faggot? Get a life Who the fuck is AC fag, and what does Assassin's Creed have to do with this?
The point is that you can't make the argument that MGSV dumbed down level design, because the MGS series always suffered from cinematic, railroader corridor design. MGSV is the first time the series dipped its toes into the sort of freeform level design that allows for multiple approaches that you saw in other stealth games like Hitman and Thief.
no, Fukushima wrote all the dialogue, and the scripts were finalized by localization teams. If you want actual kojimacore, play 4 and 5, then laugh at yourself.
Michael Collins
Nah blatant lie. Every bit of dialogue was written by kojima. Fukushima just wrote the side dialogues that played after a saved game or when you randomly call them.
Jeremiah White
cope. The series went downhill as soon as he left, and he did Ghost Babel on his own. It's evident who the tapent behind it was, please don't lecture on my favourite series, you aren't capable of it.
