Why do people like the weird 2.5D that a lot of games on the DS/3DS used? I think it looks quite ugly and blurry

The world itself looks fine. The fact that NPC sprites that aren't standing directly next to you distort is the ugly part.

You could say the art direction is shitty, I would agree with you there, but no it is not blurry. I'm telling you I can clearly see the pixels and aliasing, which itself is a refutation of the perception of any kind of blur. So it's either your eyes are not good, or there is a nomenclature confusion where you say "blur" but in reference to some other, separate aspect.

i hate the transition to 3d pokemon because it doesn't always look good
i wish they had full 2d sprites with fluid movement like being able to walk in curves, not restricted by the grid

Because the DS is piss weak, so genuine 3D is out of question if you don't want the game to look like a pile of shit. 2.5 at least looks relatively decent, probably the best one can hope from a DS.

I think it looks cool, personally. The best looking 3D games use textures for facial expressions anyways, so environments are 3D's strongest suit.

Pokemon hasn't looked good since Gold/Silver/Crystal. In fact, that was literally the only time it looked good (not counting Pokemon Stadium 1/2)

You'd have to be an unovabortion to think gen V looks remotely good. They should've just stuck with gen IV graphics

Gen 2 definitely looked the best, but gen 3 was good as well. the hop to the DS and making 3D models is what started making everything look crusty and unrefined. They should have stuck exclusively to pixel art.

I think the lowpoly 3D model environments+sprites would've looked fantastic on a system with a slightly higher-res screen. The problem was that the DS's screen was so lowres that sprites distorted really badly whenever they weren't at the exact angle as yours.
Still better than XY onwards.

Can someone PLEASE describe to me what makes gen 3 so good? The color is so solid, no fucking jagged sprites like in OP image. Its definitely a different style from gen 2 which I like for different reasons but gen 3 will always be my favorite. I would pay $60 for a 60 fps game on that engine again. I hate the lowres look of the ds and 3ds games.
