For anyone who’s read Kurayami Dance, what was with that scene in chapter 9 where Wataru has a flashback to him as a little kid talking about death with him mom in a car? I’ve only read up to the end of that chapter; does it get explained later?

Come to think of it, we never do find out why Henry has it in for Travis. At least Vergil, petty as it might be, has a reason for wanting to put down Dante.

Does the talent scout from Badman Strikes Back and Dan's Smith's comments about Travis being the champ up above ground imply that there's an actual UAA?

I always figured that he wanted to kill his fellow swordsman of a brother to wave his familial dick around and to force Sylvia to quit running around at the same time. Both of Travis' siblings in NMH 1 try to torment and kill him even though he's not the main person antagonizing them and is even a step removed from and reasonably unaware of their plights.

It doesen't, it just ties into the overall theme of Kurayami Dance which is childhood trauma

I mean, at first, due to how it sounds like his voice coming out of the answering machine, it appears that he's trying to filch Travis for money alongside Sylvia. But that turns out to be a red herring. Maybe he's meant to be a parody of Vergil since he "helps" Travis fight Batt like how Vergil assisted against Arkham:

NMH1: Scammed actual assassins Hotline Miami (before Hotline Miami) style. While it has a few scant perks such as facilitating Dr. Peace's dinner with his daughter and renting out a theatre for Harvey to fight in, it's more of a shell company created by Sylvia and Jeane to filch out as much money from Travis as possible while making him suffer all the way to the top.

NMH2: Made "legitimate" by Batt who also found a way to monetise it via streaming. Largely serves the same purpose as NMH1's ala a meat grinder to throw Travis into so he's nice and tender and messed up for the coup de grace

Crazy, after beating it just thinking about it being a full price release game sounded harsh. Still imported a Japanese copy before the rerelease rumors for the sake of a collection.

It was around month after release but went down a point, not sure where it sits now.

It was at 69 for a while, but then got bumped down to 67 because jornos are faggots. It’s probably because Travis mocks the idea of a game’s metascore mattering.

It helps that it was created back in the Playstation 2's heyday where even shovel ware, rushed licensed games, and shoddy ports could make loads of cash. Its presentation and style probably drew players in as well.

Adding to that, Suda and pals were rather personable in gaming events in the very early 2000s. Going out on those bustling cramped Japanese convention floors to pass out pamphlets and rub elbows with consumers. Likely resulted in some good word of mouth even if the promotional materials were rather murky as to what kind of games the likes of The Silver Case or FSR were.

FSR is just such an anti-game it's hard to imagine it ever having any sort of success.
Now, obviously GHM had some sort of a following in Japan if FSR and Silver Case were modest successes. That makes Suda's later complete unpopularity in Japan more of a mystery

Yeah that's why I thought it was crazy to imagine FSR doing well, it's hard to even call it a game. No More Heroes must just not have gelled well with Japan to create that abysmal launch party it had if FSR sold well enough or they couldn't handle killer7 before it.
