Trish is relevant in her own game. Lady is relevant in 3 and she was a newcomer to the series back then. Nero was a new character in 4 who got the main protagonist role in that and 5, and despite some rushed development overall I think even the latter was a good choice as well since Dante already got relegated to his mentor role in 4 where his character development practically stopped. What I mean to say is that the characters people love became memorable in the first place because they got to properly shine in the games where they actually had major plot relevance. For example Lady gets plenty of banter with Dante and her own arc with the secondary main villain Arkham.

It's like 5 feels obliged to give every canon thing that has ever been mentioned in the series lip service without giving any thought to what they add to the overall story, probably even intentionally because they really wanted to apologize for DmC happening by going to the exact other extreme. I'd prefer the writers to try to create new interesting characters as well rather than cheaply bringing everyone back together for every game if all they're gonna do is sit in a van. Like the other user said V got a pretty positive reception right from his reveal, I think party because he seemed like a breath of fresh air, though in the end he just ended up being more fawning over Vergil.

Dante, Lady, and Vergil were all at their best in 3. It's still the only DMC with an actual good story. Trish was always a plot device more than an actual character and I never found her attractive so what they did to her in V doesn't bother me so much. Nero has never been particularly well written so again I'm not too hurt. And DMCV is very fun to play despite the writing flaws, so I still like it quite a bit and put it as second best DMC game after 3.

How easy is this engine to mod? I know some people removed mist/ smoke and all that to show off ass shots, and I know there's the Mr. X mod for RE2, but normally mods can be kind of sparse for games with such high graphical fidelity, especially considering it's apparently kind of hard to get new assets into this engine, or at least it was apparently stupidly expensive, leading to heavy asset reuse between RE7, RE2 (remake), and even some spill-over into DMC5.

This is my first DMC and honestly DMD just seems like a chore most of the time. Enemies that were fun to fight before now take so fucking long to die. The Angelo knights with the big swords are one of the worst examples of this. Lady's character wasn't explored in 4. She was but a cameo there.
In DMC5, Lady is actually relevant despite not doing any cool action stuff. The long term consequences of shooting her dad in the face and being all alone is present. Lady is a heavy drinker and full of regret.
Every character in DMC5 was relevant to the theme of broken families and the regret of past decisions, the inability to keep whatever remained of their families together. The entire series is basically family squabbles and people feeling out of place.
Lady and Trish's brief conversations with Nero and V were seemingly minor but still very important. Lady in particular being the one who had to end the life of a family member, something Dante was once and for all about to do.

Vergil, Dante and Nero's choices in the final two missions were from a culmination of the things they've experienced, they all were focused on "family".
Vergil subtly admitting his error, and resigning himself to one last fight even though he probably would not have won.
Dante giving Vergil one last chance to give up, then conceding that he'd have to kill his brother.
Nero desperately doing whatever it takes to save what little blood-related family he had left and offering an alternative.
