In all seriousness, what in the fuck is up with Capcom's fighting division these days? MH, RE and DMC (despite how you feel about the recent entries) show some level of care or polish. Their fighting side is all over the place.

my issue with going for a realistic art style is it makes a lot of designs just look off. the Chunners just looks gross and the Cammy, while cute, just looks wrong, and we enter a weird uncanny valley when we start going to the stranger SF characters like Blanka or Zangief

Low budget, short dev time and all the talented devs they had left. I believe the battle planner currently works at SNK. Capcom just doesn't really seem to value investing in the actual game part, but will dump loads into esports cause they can easily be the biggest there. Apparently the CPT stream now has ads for other capcom games, all starts to make sense.

They made their two most recent fighting games at a time where they had no idea what they were doing, I think Infinite was their wakeup call, and if we get something new in fighting games from them, we might see better art direction

I feel like we might see a comeback with their next fighting game, they re-released all their old ones which probably once and for all showed any casuals playing how meh SFV is in comparison and Capcom might reinvent themselves like they have with all their other IPs.

Man, I hope SF's next entry wows people. It was never my main fightan but SFV I was dumb enough to get it on release day full price has just been a lukewarm experience overall for me. I really liked seeing some Alpha/3S characters return but the hype for anything is snuffed once I start playing.

MvCI was blatantly a cashgrab forced onto them to shill the MCU, SFV was 6 years ago, at a time where Capcom as a whole was fucking trash, maybe we'll see them fix things with whatever they do next since they've definitely seemed to focus on more of rebooting of their other franchises like MH and RE. We might see them do something completely different for their next fighting game(whether it be something strange like Capcom vs ArcSys or something neat like a Darkstalkers revival)

That didn't really change anything though. There was no mass drop when that collection came out, just a slow general drop of interest over the years. What SFV showed Capcom is that next to no effort with still give it one of the largest current fighting game player bases who happily buy costumes. Game has even sold 2.9 million by now, not amazing but more than most fighters can ever manage.

Everything that predicted to go wrong with SFV has gone wrong. Overall the game is at a decent place now but the first year was really bad.

Sony funding them and it rushing out the door half finished was really bad and they never recovered from it really.

It's too bad because I enjoy the game more than 4

yeah, I'm just hoping Capcom continues their trend of revitalizing their ips, RE7(with VR) and REmake2 were great ways to bring interest back to Resident Evil; MHWorld while casualizing a lot of stuff, still made a great game with a lot of quality of life upgrades; MM11 was a neat, but kind of dated, revival of the series; and DMC5 existing is pretty nice(heck it's also been the same stretch of time from DMC to DMC5 as it has been from SFV to now, so we might get a new SF pretty soon if they follow this trend)

They are pretty much scapping SFV as they move to SF6 or whatever the reboot they are planning for the franchise.
Capcom still holds SF2 and CvS at heart, and seeing RE2R and such doing well, may had given them some ideas about it.

it's not just Chun I'm worried about, how do you make Zangief look realistic without destroying everything that's appealing about him, how do you make Blanka work in a realistic art style, how do you make most of the SF cast work in realism without sacrificing a lot of the memorable aspects to them.

Zangief is an absolute unit that is impossible to replicate in realism perfectly, even bodybuilders don't measure up

As much as I think the RE is impressive I really don't want Capcom to keep forcing the photorealism style on every game from now on. I wanna see if they are capable of making a game with unique style and models, and not go the same route MK and Injustice did. Plus if they ruin Cammy I'm gonna sperg like a maniac.

It isn't really that simple. A cartoon style allows you to take things further without having to take on board some of the disgusting aspects of reality. In a realistic style he would look like a legit freak and not a fun big guy.

I think what I would genuinely be concerned for is the well being of the women that have to play these characters, they literally do not win if they play them:

I like the styles they experiment with. Leaning toward realism with a unique style would be fine. Photorealism would be boring and a fucking bummer.

The worlds tallest bodybuilder Olivier Richters is the exact same height as Zangief, 214cm. But he does not have as much muscle mass as Zangief, that's completely out of all realms of possibility at that height.

This is why i Feel that Capcom will do that in SF6or reboot, its still a solid design for all characters.

So far the games they've been done under the new engine have their own look, the only you can say that binds them together is their use of real life models and realism approach, but you can't say that DMC5 and RE2/RE7 look very similar in style.

yeah that's why we're saying SF should never be realistic, they tried doing a realistic Zangeif with the SF movie before and he looked like a virgin when compared to even SF2(where he's arguably the smallest)

I doubt female players would be happy with it either though. Part of the reason we can have mirror matches is, one time a SF2 dev saw two female friends want to play but were annoyed when only one could be Chun. Players in general gain an attachment to their character and I think this is very true of female players. It is much easier to liver vicariously through a cartoon face, cause within reason it can be what you want. A somewhat changeable face means anyone can be that character, there is no set face for being Chun-li. Give a set face and you are more or less that character

Street Fighter shouldn't be realistic, I'm hoping they just bring Akiman back as the lead artist again
