The combat in all Persona games is horribly mediocre compared to mainline SMT so the only thing that matters when ranking the games is the plot and the atmosphere
2 and 3 are the only ones with solid writing, therefore they are the only Persona games that matter in my book

the only fights in that game i'd say are bullshit is the oni boss who makes copies of himself and you can only really see which is real when kagatsuchi is full and maybe some of the fiends purely because they surprise you. even then theres hints about how to defeat enemies like that if you just pay attention to the fucking game.

They're all such fantastic games that I feel like trying to measure them against each other is pointless, their differences are so inconsequential. I'd be equally likely to replay any one of them.

5 plays the best, but 3 and 4 have way more soul

Only played 3 - 5 to the end, 3 > 4 > 5.

3 had some problems like wasted characters, Tartarus and a slow start, but character development lasting the whole game makes me more invested in the overall cast, I liked everyone, Full Moon battles mean that there's more consistent story (Pacing is still bad, but 4 and 5 felt worse since you could rush the actual content) and of course its ending was the most meaningful with its overall plot to me making the most use out of the thematic focus.

IMO, the dungeon was actually worse in 5 because you had both Palaces and Mementos and Mementos is basically Tartarus. 3's is just boring, 4 is okay and 5 gets super annoying thanks to Mementos requests and that fucking music that doesn't change even if the Palaces are mostly okay.

P5 has the most polished gameplay and UI but is still worse than P3 and 4. That's how bad they fucked up the story and characters.

Actually agreed with every single point. Especially the first two ones though I'm not sure about the objectivity of them.

Not entirely sure what can I attribute it to but I enjoyed the fuck out of just chilling and grinding tartarus, fusing demons and leveling up each of my characters whereas 4's and even 5's dungeons just felt like absolute busywork.

4. The social sim mechanics are best suited for a small town, the OST is perfect, the characters having actual character development in the social links is a great idea, the story is very well paced and fun (except for the bullshit with nanako), and the game play is much more serviceable than 3. 5 has arguably better dungeons but still aren't that good, huge weakness of the persona series as a whole. Rest of the stuff like themeing and if you like a characters is pretty personal, but every games does it well

Tartarus has a great atmosphere that really works in the setting and puts you into a trance as you scale it. There's a rhythm to it that gets more frantic as the story progresses until the catharsis of the final month.

Each floor is packed together decently tight so you don’t have to spend too much time just running from place to place
There’s risk/reward to returning to the bottom to heal but sacrificing progress

I genuinely do not see what anyone can say is particularly bad about Tartarus that isn’t true of any Persona game’s dungeons. If you don’t like the randomness then fine, but it hardly makes a difference when 1-4 all have dungeons that might as well be random.

Part of the problem with 4 is that the algorith or what have you that puts the dungeons together sucks. Every floor is composed of 3-6 mile-long hallways, half of which are dead ends that don’t even have a chest, and all of which have like 1-2 enemies placed in your direct path that you can’t avoid. It’s such a chore to get across a floor even if you have the whole thing mapped out.

Difference being that 3’s was built to work when listened to on loop whereas in 5 you just have to hear KEEP YOUR FOCUS AWAY FROM THE CHICKEN HANDS for five hours straight

I like the writing and overall feel of 3, and its the only one with a FeMC. Possibly the worst gameplay because of Tartarus, however.
5 had some problems with its writing, but it has the best gameplay and I like most of the characters, including confidants. Only ones I didn't particularly care for were get smoked kid and Ohya, but it's not like I dislike them. Also had too much "serious time" and not enough "fun time".
4 has the opposite problem of 5 in that it has too much "fun time" and not a whole lot of "serious time". I also didn't particularly care for the characters and would often have a hard time choosing who to spend time with because I didn't really like anyone but Doijma, Nanako, and Adachi, and I don't have Golden so the latter didn't even have a link.

Yes Tartarus is the weakest part of any persona game and shit in all forms.

5 because of the gameplay. It mixes SMT and Persona very well, and the flashiness makes the combat cool. I wish SMTV finds a way to integrate P5's style while also retaining that sense of speed SMT games have.

3 has the best story but worst gameplay, 5 has the best gameplay but worst story, 4 strikes the middle ground for me of being good at both and also having the best group dynamic of the 3 games. Also it has my favorite setting out of them, not a huge fan of schools like in 3 and the city stuff in 5 felt a bit underutilized. Might be a bit biased since its the one I played first, but I do genuinely believe its the best one overall from the modern trilogy.

Persona 5, it has the best cast and story. I liked the layout and seeing all of the classic SMT demons in the new graphics being more animated. I liked how it brought back a lot of stuff from the original Persona 1 and 2 as well.
