Why do people hate Suikoden II's story?
It's flawed, I get it. Anime shit with plot twists that make people hysterical. And a really dumb cunt as a sister. But overall it's pretty fucking alright, easily one of my favorite games.
Dragon Quest V has a pretty engaging story I felt.
Occultism and spiritual symbolism the basis of all society keep being angry slave of the archons
>We'll never have a plot as complex and inspired as Xenogears because there are a lot of autists like this who think everything has to be shallow or it's automatically pretentious
>disk 2
>>We'll never have a plot as complex and inspired as Xenogears because there are a lot of autists like this who think everything has to be shallow or it's automatically pretentious
Xenogears is fucking garbage, and the cult-like praise it gets is completely misplaced.
It would take an entire college thesis to completely detail the awfulness of the writing, but here's perhaps the most damning example of Xenogears' atrocious writing:
lparchive.org
The link lists the exploits of a certain character, who the writers obviously intended to be seen as sympathetic and one of the good guys. But because Xenogears' story structure is so ridiculously convoluted, with crazy revelations and shocking twists happening at every turn, examining the actions of that character for even a minute leaves one no choice but to conclude that said character is utterly despicable, because the writers had no qualms about twisting characters to faciliate their convoluted rollercoaster of a story. This is how the entirety of Xenogears' story is constructed: it's all style with no substance. All surface depth, appearing to be deep by name-dropping just about every philosophical and religious concept in existence, but exhibiting about as much understanding of those concepts as a 4-year old.
Another strike against the game is that half of it is missing. The second disc of the game is basically like having a friend tell you all about how amazing the game is while occasionally handing you the controller to fight some boss battles. I have no idea why people gave it a free pass while completely losing their shit over something like the Mass Effect 3 ending.
Lastly, the translation is atrocious, even by the standards of its time. It's just a step up a machine translation and means the dialogue is impossible to take seriously.
I think Luca Blight is fucking stupid, but I still had tons of fun gathering stars.
>blah blah blah politics n sheeeit
FFT is good for the gameplay, not for the story
Nah dude, Luca is a fucking insane badass
The final showdown with him is one of the best JRPG moments ever
No character is supposed to be "sympathetic", you idiot, not every plot puts characters in good-evil side like the shit you consume, literally everyone in Xenogears is in a gray area
FFT's plot is actually easy to understand though?
>FFT is good for the gameplay, not for the story
Don't forget that all those politics (which were shallow to begin with) are just window dressing for the real plot, which is abotu an evil church resurrecting an evil demon god.
And that's somehow the pinnacle of video game writing...
Doesn't make it good
No one gave disk 2 a free pass
It’s the reason people shit on this game at all
>No character is supposed to be "sympathetic", you idiot, not every plot puts characters in good-evil side like the shit you consume, literally everyone in Xenogears is in a gray area
Who said anything about that you mongoloid? Morally ambiguous characters can still be framed as protagonists. Nobody is arguing this.
Do you seriously think the writers intended for us to see Citan as a complete psychopath? Because that's the only logical conclusion you can arrive at when examining his actions. But that was not intentional, it's because the writers were incredibly incompetent.
>What jrpg simply has the engaging story?
Breath of Fire 3/4
I think FFVII is one of those overlooked gems
Citan isn't a psychopath, I have read the meme argument you provided before, and I still believe his actions stem from his own uncertainness at best, and from gameplay convenience purposes at worst, like who the fuck cares if he actually returns the desert track, really? Do you want an already longass RPG to be bloated with this stuff you don't even see in movies with the "I'll return it later" trope?
That's what makes him an entertaining antagonist. There's no deep melodramatic nonsense or political garbage and he's not even some god. He's just fucking crazy and it took all sorts of kekakus and a small army to take a him down and he still has enough life to shit on the protag for it.
I'm honestly tired of this fucking game where a game is supposed to be deep and you spend more time outside the game wondering what the fuck did you just play.
Only game that I like that does that is Terranigma. A game I cannot reach to understand, -and- is fucking unplayable to boot is FF8.
I didn't dislike him. He's crazy but it has a pretty boring backstory (mom got raped and killed in front of him when he was a child IIRC)
die in obscurity
The way the game sets him up was also great. You don't just see him being fucking crazy, at the start you saw how he planned the incident to start a war and seeing a village burn while he makes a woman oink like a pig before cutting her down is effective in showing how much of a threat he is.

>How dare you criticize this story-driven RPG for having blatant plot and character motivation holes!
"gameplay convenience" is not an excuse And Citan is not an isolated instance either: everyone in Xenogears suffers from the aforementioned issues.
Other video games have told vastly more complex video game stories than Xenogears, yet don't run into those problems. It's just shitty writing.
Everybody agrees that 8 is so shit that Square does not even want to acknowledge it's existence. The only people that can defend it is nostalgiafags. 7, 9, 10, and 12 are getting ported to every modern console with the exception of 8. It's laughable.

>He's just crazy yo!
What a unique and unconventional antagonist. Totally never seen before in countless jrpgs.
Aren't FF8 characters in those dissidia games though?
Understandable, but the intention was not to make him sympathetic or deep but to give an answer to why he's crazy.
based doctorpastaposter
8 had too many times where people literally just sit around and talk and don't get me started on all the bullshit secrets the game had made to sell strategy guides.
Holy fucking based. Xenocucks need to fuck off.
In the PSP Dissida sequel, Squall was replaced by his father and was made an OC story so no one acknowledges his existence.
God dammit I am playing thigh kotor2 right now and I just got spoiled hard
His mom died after giving birth to Jillia and when they were attacked she left him behind or something to protect him. It's not meant to make you pity him, it's meant to explain why Jillia is the only one he talks to on a remotely equal standing and why he hates his father; aside from this he has a line about a sword not needing a proper lineage if it's sharp which probably refers to how he doesn't give a shit that Jowy is a bastard child.
I don't know about the story but the combat in this game is so barebones it literally stopped me on three separate occasions from continuing the game any further. And this is coming from someone who loves JRPGs. I never made it far but the game feels like it's a late night Toonami anime in an interactive form.
>I don't know about the story but the combat in this game is so barebones it literally stopped me on three separate occasions from continuing the game any further.
At least you quit before you got to the platforming sections where random encounters can even trigger mid-jump.
>I don't know about the story but the combat in this game is so barebones it literally stopped me on three separate occasions from continuing the game any further.
You don't really play Xeno games for the "gameplay", even XB2 is pathetic on that side, though the blade series in general is much better than Takahashi's past games in the sense that at least it does have gameplay this time around, no matter how mediocre it is.
Besides, you're not missing anything by skipping the series, unless you're really into some eyecandy here and there and good /m/ stuff, the Xeno series has no real value as games in terms of gameplay or, well, much else outside of its mechs and music.
Telos is pretty hot though I'll give you that.
