Steiner is the best character in the game. Only a shame he gets limited by damage cap the fastest.

Protip: if your characters have high enough Spirit, and you give everyone auto-regen, healing magic becomes completely obsolete by endgame.

He's a bit of a fool and stubborn to understand new and opposing ideas and is very worried about Zidane's influence on Garnet, but eventually he comes to respect Zidane once he realises he's been fighting for the wrong side, and till the very end he's still loyal to Garnet and is probably the closest person she has to a father figure. His friendship with Vivi is also top tier development.

Two years after the ending of Final Fantasy IX.
The happy ending was not to last. Zidane has not accepted by many of the subjects in Alexandria as rumours circulated that he was the brother of Kuja, whose wrath had brought such death and destruction to their world. Not to mention the fact that he frankly lacked the intelligence to rule a country, being more apt with 'street smarts.' It all caused a massive strain on his relationship with Queen Garnet, who also had become tired of his incredibly high libido. Her ass simply could not take it anymore, which led to arguments.
Freya was also having a hard time. Fratley never did remember her, causing her pain every day. Eventually, she thought it best for both of them if she simply moved on.
Meeting in a pub for drinks and reminiscing, this is the suprisingly bad news an increasingly drunken duo had to share. Zidane looks into the bottom of his last pint, and sighs. He really thought everything would work out for them both, but now...
Suddenly, he feels a hand on his leg, and looks up into the blushing, yet keen face of Freya.

It's unlikely to be a throwback. All the best selling titles have been that VII/VIII/XIII blend of fantasy and scifi. Sales wise the more sword-and-sorcery ones just don't perform as well historically. Your best hope is future XIV expansions and maybe the next MMO, as both so far have been 'classic' in theme and setting.

Is there anywhere to see the order Lost Chapters get released on global? I started during Leon's event and I'm up to act 2 but there's like a dozen characters I see weapons for but no means to acquire.

Remember that the whole Black Mage thing was Kuja's thing, Kuja's the one who created the dolls and gave them barely any life, this, of course, while he was under the impression he was immortal.
Then again, Kuja was created as is, so I have no idea if he simply would live 60 years to balance the fact he didn't go through a childhood or 80 which is an average life expectancy.
Zidane was created after Garland learned that by skipping right to adulthood, Kuja was unable to unlock Trance, making him a failure.
Zidane will die, as is the fate of everyone, but he'll probably live a full life first

Blue Magic is extremely versatile in FFIX, you can have nuke spells at cheap cost if you know what you're doing, you can buff or remove debuff on the entire party, you can cast unique debuff that can potentially OHK the enemy, have unique elemental spells, it's up to you.
Quina is indeed a character that rewards the time and effort you invest in it.

I replayed 9 recently and the only thing that annoyed me was Cleyras sandstorm breaking for literally no reason.
Like just give a quick blurb about Kuja doing it, instead Alexandrias just "thank god that happened, time to invade now"

It's fucking annoying is what it is.
Being forced to learn skills by eating enemies isn't terrible, having to weaken them first to succeed is.
The spells themselves, most of them cost way too much MP for Quina to be using on the regular because of their shit MP, forks dealing random damage also makes it shit for dealing consistent damage.
Then there's the fact that the spells are gimmicky as fuck and only work on enemies based on which levels they are at, you have to always know which level your enemy is so you pick the appropriate spell, meaning Zidane will have to use scan because there's no Beastiary in the game or another way to check mid battle like in SMT games for example.

Quina's shit, a waste of a party slot better used for someone else.

Steiner has a character arc where at the start of the game he is really uptight and solely focused on duty but as the game goes on this starts to fade away and he becomes more principled. It mostly happens because his Queen betrays him and he finds he has to rely on his enemies. Toward the end of the game during the “You are not alone” part Steiner helps Zidane.

All of the party members fit into this comfy theme of discarding their pasts and learning to rely on each other irregardless of their backgrounds. And Steiner is core to it.

Looking at her skills again, she mostly seems to fuck about with HP and MP, can grant regen on allies, and berserk on everyone. I don't think she's considered to have something like a sub-job in the way the other characters do, or at least not one that reminds of recurring jobs. In record keeper, she does have access to dancer skills, but I think that's based entirely on the cleyra dance ritual scene.

6 is a good one, go with that, after, you can try 4, which is a more traditional experience, or 5, which has an extensive job system that is really fun to experiment with

I got to a dungeon and was sort of stuck since I was underleveled for it and couldn't exit it
Maybe I'll pick it up again and just follow a guide a little and make sure to grind fairly often.
5 does have me really interested though for the job system, I really liked it in BD
12 does have me quite interested as well though I have read how many seemed to have mixed feelings on it but with Shadowbringers coming out soon it might be nice to play the game with the Viera.

4 in general is quite easy until the end, at least the PSP version, the DS version is actually pretty hard
all you need to do to stay at the right level is just fight each battle and never run, if you do that, you should be at a good level for most of the game, I only grinded a little bit and managed fine on the PSP
5 is quite deep but fun and rewarding when you get into the grit of it, defo worth checking out
12 is really fun and with the Zodiac Age, there's no better time to check it out, do note that this version is much easier than the original, but the jobs make it more fun and you have trial mode for an added challenge
as for spinoffs, you simply must play FF Tactics and its sequels, Tactics Advance was the game that introduced Viera and made them mainstays in the universe, the original tactics has some of the best storytelling in the series, if you want to play that, play the War of the Lions remake, if you liked that and want more, play Tactics Advance, can't get enough? Tactics A2
1 is archaic but fairly enjoyable
2 is...awkward, some parts are very ambitious for a title that was an NES game, but the dungeon design is garbage and levelling spells and stats can be a real chore, unremarkable but not entire terrible, low on the list that is for sure
3 also contains a job system and is quite a challenge on the DS, if you plan to play 5 first, come back to this if you enjoyed playing around with the jobs

To be honest, When I first played 4 (I can't believe that was back in 2011) I was somewhat new to JRPG's so I probably did end up running a fair bit in them which would explain why I was so underleveled.
I'll make sure I'm well prepared for 5, I do like deep systems but I'm genuinely not too good at really making full use of all the resources games tend to give you

It's up there as one of the best in the series, though in my opinion it's the best in the franchise.
A return to more classic fantasy and set character classes and it was the last one with Sakaguchi at the helm.
It does away with gimmicks like Materia or Junctioning in favor of a more streamlined system where you just level up for stats and learn skills and abilities by just equipping gear and using it long enough.
Protagonist isn't some sour pants brooding anti social guy like the last two before him and is pretty likable from the start, plus the full party's pretty solid character wise besides 2 or 3 missed potentials.
Story's standard Final Fantasy fare elevated by Uematsu's stellar compositions, those musical motifs with the main theme arrangements throughout the game's story are just genius

Are you joking? VIII was an autistic mess gameplay wise making it the least favorite of the Playstation trio and VII's character designs and models look like hot garbage in comparison to IX, with it's stick figures, Popeye forearms with "textures" to match, and we both know that didn't stop it.
The only reason IX will never be as esteemed is because VII was babbys first jrpg, it's one of the most overrated games of all time and the fags that clamor over it are insufferable, literally crying over the death of a character after she was introduced less than an hour before, because fanboyism is that powerful, it's like a cult.
It's not a bad game by any means, but people need to stop treating it like some fucking second coming.
I don't care what anyone says, if I see FFVII in the top spot of anyone's list that's grounds to completely disregard them.

People are just put off by the CG renders because for some reason Square decided to only use renders rather than 2D art for the characters and character portraits rather than the usual, leading to the usually awful american boxarts of final fantasy games to look even worse because of the uncanny valley

It's a pretty goddamn solid game. It can be a bit slow at times, but it's a wonderful experience that I don't think anyone could outright dislike for any sane reason.

For maximum comfiness, play it on a portable device in bed every night for 1-2 hours until you beat it. You will sleep better, you'll wake up happier, and you will feel at one with the world for as long as it takes for you to end up finally finishing it.
