It honestly becomes a mindless mess in multiplayer. You'll both have fun, it's just that odds are you'll do nothing but keep dying and abusing free grenades/heavy machine guns. It really shines when you try to get as far into a 1CC run as you can.

Serious question lads, what console/collection/non-arcade versions of any of the games have you play with limited continues? I own nearly every Metal Slug via some compilation or download or whatever and they all have infinite lives with no way to turn that off, other than to just police myself to quit after so many continues, which is just no fun.

The original XBOX release of metal slug 3, very infamously, forces you to beat the last mission at least with 10 continues.
But if you've gotten good enough then that should be no problem for you.

i mostly play them on AES-mode, you get 4 continues.
So far I can only get to Mission 5 in 2/X and against Morden in 1, haven't tried 3 but that shit seems impossible to do with 4 tries.

If Metal Slug was any easier it would not be as praised. Playthroughs where someone doesn't get hit wouldn't be as impressive. The game by itself only makes up half of the spectacle, the other half comes from the player(s)

After that it follow the same event as the games, You defeat Morden and after some time he goes back with more soldiers and weaponry, with the twist that he got allied with the mars people to take over the PFs, but the aliens betray him and go full invasion on the earth.
There's some other details like Marco and Tarma being blackmailed into joining the army again to stop Morden, or that Fio and Eri are forced to kill both of them if they refuse to continue fighting.

because they never explain it, it's all in the sites and manuals and some of the artbooks.
MS3 follows the whole alien thing, but they actually trick you that Morden is back at it again, but when you defeat him it was all a ruse and the Mars people now are going full war against the earth, they also take one of your characters because they think you're the "ultimate soldier" and start cloning him/her like crazy and then is you and some of the rebel forces against rootmars, the leader of the mars people.
I think 4 is the same as 3 but instead of aliens is some crazy doctor doing robots and shit, 5 is about some cult waking up an ancient god or something, 6 is you helping mars people defeat their predators and 7 is future soldiers helping Morden take over the world.
1 is the easiest to start with, first play it using all the continues you want, then try only beating it with just 4.
XX is the latest one,there's a rumored new entry coming soon, but nothing besides rumors

If they’d ever add Attack characters, the only likely one to make appearances would be Abigail, The Professor, and Mira. All of which would pilot/command a tank/mech and retreat once its destroyed.
