What is it that makes these games so good? At first glance they don't seem like anything spectacular but they're still some of the best games i've ever played. I can't put my finger on it.

They were made by a guy with a genuine love of games. I think profit and fame were only ever secondary concerns for him
>What is it that makes these games so good? At first glance they don't seem like anything spectacular but they're still some of the best games i've ever played. I can't put my finger on it.
The porn and the rabid fanbase.
Your low IQ makes them seem like they are good.
I guess most people would say it's the charm, but I find Toby's writing hamhanded a lot of the time. Feels like he tries really hard to be quirky and sweet. They're just pretty fun games even if you ignore all that entirely though.
They've got soul, ironically the very thing people that hate them whinge about games not having these days.
Sexy Undyne.
Unironically because they have SOUL
What are you, 12?
they're Yea Forums&Yea Forums in game form
after an hour i was bored of the shtick
I like them and I can still accept that they're mostly only good for the music. The sappy writing wouldn't work without it.
unironically, soul, toby might be a jew but he puts soul when making games
Toby knows that fans only care about characters so even if you have a shit looking game with not much in them, the real soul is when you interact with these characters.
He made millions weaving the perfect game for autistic fucks and you can too
How old are you OP?
His writing really is shitty and seems to take influence from Homestuck. Gameplay and music is fine, so in a way he's leagues above Hussie.
24
Pure unfiltered passion.
You know how in highschool you used to have that big epic story that you spent years developing at the back of your head? Well Toby had the same thing going on but he actually made it real.
*sigh*
>Deltarune demo comes out on Switch
>decide to replay it
>try out different dialogue options where you can be a dick to Ralsei
>find myself quitting the game and going back to the last save because I feel awful
Not many games can get me to do that. Toby is just really good at writing his characters.
I like them and I can still accept that they're mostly only good for the music. The sappy writing wouldn't work without it.
>and you can too
C-Can I?
Discard the manual twice for a fun scene.
Why sex is like pokemon now, west?
I feel like that would hurt his feelings.
Homestuck has good writing though.
Oh, it's okay. He's fine with it.
On the first discard, he picks it back up and gives it back to you because he thinks you dropped it on accident.
On the second discard, you literally fucking destroy it right before his eyes, so he apologizes and says he'll make a better one next time.
>tfw first battle and that animation happens and this starts
youtu.be
better track than like 80% of Undertale's ost
Because the creator had real passion and cared about what he was making.
I like them and I can still accept that they're mostly only good for the music. The sappy writing wouldn't work without it.
That's not funny
I can't understand what people find so special about them. I love the combat and music, but the writing and overall presentation is a pretty mixed bag of quality. (There were moments in undertale specifically feeling like I was playing a bad creepypasta game) I've played much better. They aren't bad though, they're quite good. But man, they are over fucking hyped. I'd have to assume that a majority of those who find themselves attached maybe haven't played a lot of RPGs or any of the games they take inspiration from or love it because of it's influences?
Only the music is remarkable.
Characters/story are good if you are an easily impressed teen, and the fanbase is awful.
nigga, i been playing rpgs since Lunar fuckin 2.
His games are just fuckin fresh.
this story really does feel like it was something I would have dug the fuck out of when I was 13 or 14. Like when I was 12 and I thought Kingdom Hearts was deep.
Well, what I want to know is what exactly is "fresh" about them?
Good writing.
10 years ago I used to think Elfen Lied was the epitome of depth and Death note a good tier detective writing.
We all were 15 years old once.
Everyone agrees the music is good at least.
youtu.be
I WANT SUSIE TO FUCK ME!
I think it's pretty funny. You can really feel the quirky inspiration that he got from Earthbound.
Your bad taste.
Passsionate dev bleeds through. Great music, fun gameplay, cute and endearing characters, only like 4-8 hours long so it doesn't wear out its welcome.
He took notes from the engaging aspects of Homestuck and Earthbound, trimmed them down, and had one good idea when it came to the gameplay.
That's all.
Writing and music and a clear enough focus that both of them always get to shine. Simple as that.
Mother's humor is a lot more deadpan and subtle than this. This feels like it's trying to be le epic funny meme of the week
Dead on.
I hate that the fact that humor is involved, has people comparing the two VERY VERY different types of humor.
the music is good(at least in Undertale, I thought Deltarune's soundtrack was forgettable outside of one song), the palette is pleasing(this is especially true for deltarune I like the color scheme of the main 3), and the writing can be funny sometimes. It should've stayed niche since it's annoying hearing shit from the undertale fanbase, but good on Toby for becoming a millionaire, he's a good guy(for a furry)
Yes it is.
Dumb goat needs to know his place.
You might wanna expand your video game library because there are much better games.
Haven't touched Deltarune but Undertale has glaring flaws that really kept it from being an enjoyable experience. The basic gist of the game is novel, an RPG where you don't have to kill, but how it follows through on it is quite sloppy, where it does its utmost to make the monsters look sympathetic but only through text telling you to feel sorry for them...while the story has monsters act in rather questionable ways that wouldn't really garner any sort of sympathy. Aside from this is how the game's morality only falls on one correct decision by the player while the others are meant to be objectively wrong choices, creating an illusion of design.
And the way this game wants to chew out the RPG genre and those who enjoy them makes me question if Fox even likes most RPGs at all.
What if I hate his characters?
Not even the music is that great. Any game can have good music.
THANK YOU! This is exactly what I've been saying since this game came out.
By "fresh", do you mean new and unique? Because I have a ton of RPGs to introduce you to if you think Memetale and Totally-Not-Memetale 2 are unique.
Except that's all he got from Earthbound. Toby misses the point of the games in general and just think the quirkiness is what makes them good. The problem is that people fucking fell for it.
>download Undertale torrent
>try it for 2 hours or so
>it is literally a numale soigame
>uninstall and never try again
Can someone tell me what they see in that game? The fighting system tried to be innovative but it's just plain bad.
The game overall seems to cater to 200lbs chicks with blue hair that browse tumblr. What the fuck is wrong with you people??
It's pretty much a quirky Japanese indie game made by a Westerner
It nails that tone it wants without going too heavily into irony or insincerity,
Define "numale soigame" without saying "it's like undertale" or any similar shit.
undertale is good cause of how the characters work, the music, and the overall pacing with neat gameplay.
Deltarune is good for it being a demo but a lot more needs to be put into it, especially with its pace. The characters work however even for chapter one i felt like it went to quick with its writing.
Calling it now: September 2021 will see the full release of Deltarune. Somebody screencap this.
I agree. To add to this, the notion that the 'player' is separate from Frisk only on the pacifist run is a bit obnoxious and I'd argue adds literally nothing to the story. If I played the game like a fucking cherub from start to finish, never once killed anything at all with the time I spent with the game, then the MC is as much 'me' as they are in the genocide route where 'Chara' takes over.
Except the pacing is bad. And so are the characters.
Except Asgore. He's alright.
numale soigame: a game that features a lot of "emotions" and making "forming bonds" and possibly romance options, things that are fairly absent in an incel numale's life
Poor taste in games
>tfw I just noticed that deltarune is an anagram of undertale
It's also an anagram of NUTDEALER.
youtube.com
>Aroflux
That sounds metal as fuck.
What are most RPGs? Neck yourself you doublenigger.
i was meme'd by Yea Forums and played undertale. it's not bad but it isn't actually good. there's no real gameplay, you never die, story is boring, design is shitty to ok depending on the level, writing is too nerdy, the humor is too dumb.
mutiple endings and having to play the game 6 times does not make a game good.
To be fair, it's pretty damned forced in Undertale.
You spared this thing that tried to kill you? Now you're friends! Apparently.
Based filter going over clean on these pencil-neck geeks
Susie is the GF everyone wants.
Yuck. No.
yet you come here every day for hours
so fucking based
ur a retard hahahahahah
you need to put at least 3 more buzzwords in this post to show it to people, you forgot to mention reddit/resetera/cuck/NPC. ad one of them and try again
>ALLOW ME TO TELL YOU ABOUT SOME COMPLEX FEELINGS.
>FEELINGS LIKE...
>THE JOY OF FINDING ANOTHER PASTA LOVER.
>THE ADMIRATION FOR ANOTHER'S PUZZLE-SOLVING SKILLS.
>THE DESIRE TO HAVE A COOL, SMART PERSON THINK YOU ARE COOL.
>THESE FEELINGS... THEY MUST BE WHAT YOU ARE FEELING RIGHT NOW!!!
Papyrus is the best,
UT/DR is what happens when you have no talent but work hard and have genuine love for what you do. I'm incredibly happy that games like this game be succesful amongst the see of lazy uninspired AAA games who offer nothing but visuals and marketing but have no magic to them.
cringe, get a grip
i assure you no game is getting ignored because of this game, its not like undertale is an infinite game like mmos or shlooters where players play WoW and only WoW and wont even look at other games. UT is 10 bucks and like 20 hours if you do all endings, you play it play something else. At most people think games are inferior to it and they have all the right in the world to do so.
if you disagree tell me one game that got ommited because of UT
The thing is, once Undertale came out, people keep talking about it as if it saved the gaming industry or something. And they would refer to competing games like the other user did: "lazy uninspired AAA games who offer nothing but visuals and marketing but have no magic to them".
Now that's not really Undertale's fault but maybe everyone else's for being too overly impressed by anthing that mildly wows them.
The game shouldn't be a carbon copy of earthbound though, and I'm glad it isn't otherwise there would be zero reason to play this.
you have reddit, and it's terminal
Yeah but the inspiration is still there. And what it derives is rather lackluster.
Toby Fox didn't make Undertale/Deltarune because he wanted to make a game, he made them because he wanted to make Undertale/Deltarune.
itt. people who haven't played earthbound and dont know anything about it
seriously these 2 games are nothing alike
don't you have a mosque to be shooting up?
