How much extra content over the PC release of Disgaea 1 does this have?
I've played all the other games in the series but kind of just entirely forgot this remake existed so I haven't kept up with it at all

It works fine. But like said, it's lazy as hell. They literally just updated the models and the areas, didn't touch ANY of the art (despite having drawings for literally 90% of these characters done in a more modern style), didn't update the combat mechanics to D5, didn't add anything from D5 that made the grind less of a slog, and in general just released Disgaea 1 but with modern Disgaea graphics.

I was expecting more from it. Like D5's gameplay and visual fidelity with D1's story and pacing plus a few extra chapters would have been great. It's not got anything that'd make me buy it over the PC version to be honest. It's a shame.

This, could you actually imagine 1 with good gameplay? It would be the best Disgaea game in music, story and gameplay. Instead we get a shitty cashgrab

D1 is a better story and it's generally better to play the earlier games first so that the improvements to the core mechanics don't make it hard to play them later. The games add a lot of small but meaningful changes in each iteration to the core mechanics. If you were to get used to 5's and try and play 1 after you'd be in for a bad time.

That said if you don't care about the story and only want to play one game in the series then 5's your choice.

Absolutely incorrect. Disgaea 1 has been long-since surpassed in terms of gameplay by how D5 plays, and the QOL changes and decisions made in D5 offer more meaningful differences in Rebirthing a character then in D1, where it was basically just done for autism purposes. In addition, there's more meaningful character variety in terms of main cast party members, instead of what its like D1, where the only meaningful differences in characters are what weapons and spells you choose to have them learn. Evilities added a lot of complexity that makes going back to D1 a pain in the ass, especially because D5 also has that "Cheat shop", where you can increase EXP/Level of enemies massively to make the grind less of a slog for higher levels.

D5 is arguably the best game in the series because of how good its gameplay is, and if D1C had D5 gameplay, it would have been objectively the best game in the entire franchise.

Every single person who plays the series accepts that the gameplay and QoL features have improved the core mechanics consistently with each game. No one would be upset if they made the first game both mechanically the best as well as being thematically and narratively the best. You're a fucking retard and you just don't want to admit that NIS fucked up this time and you can't blame it all on NISA as usual.

Usually yes, but in this case I don't think so. Disgaea fans aren't quite that pure about this stuff, a lot of people prefer the later games much less foreboding post-games.

Additionally, they've already released 1 with all it's mechanics in tact multiple times, including recently (within the past few years) on PC which means a version with the original mechanics will always be available to people on there.

While some would no doubt complain (inevitability of different opinions) I don't think the Disgaea community as a whole would be see it negatively.
