There was a clear plan for 3 models:

>Mid range box - PS4 spec console box
>High end - Better spec pre-built rig
If they had stuck with that there'd be no confusion and SteamOS would actually have a reason to exist too. But nah, they were lazy and shipped it out so we just ended up with an even more fragmented pre-built market.

the margins on prebuilts are too thin. only idiots buy them, and the companies end up having to use shitty parts for the mobo, ram etc to try to get as much out of it (so when it's compared to a computer assembled together, it doesn't seem like such a big ripoff)

there's not enough money to be made assembling desktops sadly. only apple can get away with it and it's because they sell a brand/fashion and they've integrated their entire stack, as well as the whole software

The mid-range console made sense at least. It used console-tier hardware but you had all the advantages of a PC plus your entire Steam Library from the get go. Price it right and it could have been an actual competitor.

Actually by all accounts it did reasonably well as a peripheral, and its the only design to really move the controller concept forwards in recent memory.

They didn't do that though, they partnered with pre-built makers, most of whom just threw together a generic machine with Intel+Nvidia hardware and called it a day. Alienware did a little bit more but still they used the combination of Intel+Nvidia and priced themselves out of the market. Though to be fair back then Valve had not yet developed the only fully functional high-performance drivers that have ever existed for AMD hardware.

SteamOS 3 is actually under development. Its most unbelievable feature, near full speed Windows 7 game compatibility, is already available.

its mostly dev tools and access to more assets or options within the game engine.
The only real world performance change i saw was the game loads way the fuck faster.
