Just Smash alone has sold more in 2 months than games that came out when the PS4 was released.

The platform has clearly expanded beyond the console with it expanding to the Switch, PC, phones and game streaming in the future.
Hardware sales are irrelevant with them mostly losing sales in the first few years, what matters is the software side and having people on your platform.
Whether they succeed, who the fuck knows? Buying out studios and pushing games to /all/ platforms that allow it is a better plan than restricting your company to one set of hardware (see: dominance of Windows over macOS).
