Pretty fucking big seeing as there's like 30 books and the Forerunners fucked up one of their initial Halo tests and basically made a huge region of a galaxy completely uninhabitable. There's also places like The Burn which is basically an entire solar system overtaken by the Flood.

Nah, primitive humans and forerunners had been shown to be around at the same time and were different species by the time of Halo 3. Truth claims that humans are forerunner because of his own misunderstanding of Mendicant Bias’ message during the contact harvest books. Mendicant called humans “reclaimers” and I think “His true masters” or something. Truth construed this as meaning they’re forerunner remnants meant to reclaim their birthright (aka all forerunner tech and possibly a lead role in the covenant from Truth’s perspective). Naturally, Truth saw this as a threat to his plans, so wiping humanity out was his way of removing the problem.
