He eventually caught on to what chief and cortana was doing but at that point he decided to say fuck it and pulled his men out.

He had three ships in command during the halo incident, Seeker of Truth, Ascendant Justice, and of course Truth and Reconciliation which got fucked.

So they've never said just what Halo 3 would have been originally, whom it would have followed or how it would have closed out the series, and Marty's stance afaik is that it doesn't matter because it didn't happen. Honestly it was the only time he could have done it. They were still in a position of strength. Had he waited their strength would have slowly eroded as the civil war came closer and closer to a boiling point. The loss of high charity would have really fucked things up as well. Not that they knew they were gonna lose it but the fact it would have happened anyway would have been a massive loss on those plans. The fact that the covenant was able to keep itself together afterward is a test to the reason to do it then and not later.

The original intent/idea was that an Elite Major/Vetern (red armor) was supposed to be an even match for a SPARTAN, but as time has gone on we've increasingly seen Elites less and less seen as a match for Spartans.

Even if the Elites could theoretically bench as much as a Spartan in any real combat application, they wouldn't be able to even touch them.
