Between this and what's happening with 40k, it got me wondering - why is it considered a bad thing if something like video games is seen as a "boys club"?
In Japan they clearly have media and hobbies explicitly for men and for women. They don't mind if you read or play the other but there is an understanding that it's made for a specific audience so there's no attempt to try and make it later to you if you don't fit in that audience.
But for some reason in the West if your video game isn't for everyone or only targets males, it's considered a bad thing. Why is that?
A male dominated hobby requires physical effort, critical thinking, and/or ingenuity. A female dominated hobby requires only the superficial. When you mix the two, the male half has to be dumbed down to meet the standards of the female half.

Japan has countless example of games that are heavily dominated by male demographic and tried to appeal to woman more and that goes far beyond SJW/Social Media bullshit was even a thing. With IIDX Empress Konami specifically said that they tried to appeal more to female with the theme of the game. Not like it worked much, but it was what they stated.
SEGA clearly tried to appeal more to female with maimai as well, you can see a decent amount of players being female actually, male are still playing and the majority, but it's a 2/3 male 1/3 male ratio I'd say which is pretty damn good for a skill based rhythm games. Mixed couple playing are common too.
And even nowadays many popular mobile game try to implement characters appeal to female audience. Sure you still have games clearly targeting male only, some clearly aiming only at female (like male idol shit or BL games), but you have all those super popular games in-between that are dominated by male demographic but which are trying to tap into woman by adding more male character into them.

In Japan the gender balance being 50/50 makes it way easier to attend those event and exchange with people there. You don't feel out of the place and you feel like brands are actually catering to you just as much as female which makes you want to invest yourself more into the hobby. I would never have invested myself into the hobby if it wasn't for the experience I can get in Japan, in the West I'd feel too out of the place and almost all brands are catering to woman.
